To everyone who thinks the game is not, will not be dark, gritty, mature enough. I'm going to go out on a limb and say this:
I bet that later on in the game, there will be blood rivers, dark chasms, Impaled, hanging, dismembered bodies, Darkness!, Death, screams of terror, and hellish sites to great to behold at this time.
Honesty the art style is fine, the two characters we've seen look well thought out and definitely have their own personality. The shoulder pads, meh, a little on the large side, especially on the female barb but I'm not losing sleep over this since I remember some of the armor and helms that the barbarian wore in D2 seemed a little over the top.
Remember guys, even though the art direction is set in stone, and the look of the game has been decided on, that doesn't mean that they aren't going to add specularity and other effects to the materials (surfaces) in the game. Usually these kinds of shaders and effect do not make it into the game until later on in the development cycle.
Oh and one more thing, To the people that keep showing the shiny D2 armor; those are pre-rendered sprites! Using those kind of effects in a real-time 3D engine are expensive and need to be optimized for the game to run well. That's not to say that certain shaders can't, and won't be used in Diablo3, hwoever they will probably be used sparingly and where needed.

i dont want my corpses bright, blurry, colorful, and cartoony ;p
We dont play D2 for shoulder pads, we dont play it for object models and we dont play if "for" graphics.
But every smallest aspect of a game builds the whole thing. You cant neglect even the smallest part.
I say it again: Why "good" while it can be "excellent"?
If there wont be something that gives me hope of further improvement, ill have to start looking for a game that i can keep playing for my free time...
I could look forward to this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_Age
Cool, theres much more info about it than when i saw it unintentionally the last time. Warrior, rouge and wizard.
WOW it actually is supposed to have a 'dark fantasy' instead of the usual D&D style. Also its not set around D&D at all... Dont know how that will work.
agreed, and thanks for the link, hadnt seen this bioware title yet.
im refering to exageration
a fishnet? do you sey this wiht those 3d render pic of the barb in the internet? i just cant picture that in game...
if the helm was any smaller it wouldnt fit his head
it think it clear, by watching the video in that part the barb is talking to cain, that the pauldrons are more than 2x bigger than in diablo 2 barb armor
Here ya go!
I know its not actually fishnet, however this armor still looks exaggerated to me. BTW yes this is the model used in game I believe, the only difference is that at the 800x600 resolution, and because of it's sprite based nature the details become hard to read in game.
My point is simple though. The little armor we have seen in the D3 trailer looks no less ridiculous than this armor, and quite frankly I happen to like horned skulls, big badass spikes, and steel clawed fur covered boots on my barbarian.
Why? because It's a made up game in a made up universe where made up monsters that breath fire, and spit lightning live. I want to see huge belts with horns, without some jackass complaining about how impossible it is to wield a sword with any level of dexterity based on the weight and circumference of the horns on barbarians belt.
Have people lost all use of the imagination? Do you guys sit at home, watch the movie Legend and then bitch about how big Tim Curry's horns are? I can just imagine the QQing if Tim Curry's version of the devil was in Diablo 3:
"Tim Curry's horns in that move are completely disproportionate to his body, he wouldn't be able to stand up with horns that large, or move his head side to side quickly." Forget the fact that he is a dark lord with untold power, what's important here people is maintaining the illusion of reality in a completely fantastical world.
Firstly, the complaints about shoulder armor sizes imply that the game Diablo has regulation shoulder pad sizes. Alas, it does not.
Secondly, the complaint is so odd, seeing that so many different types of armor and armor sizes will be available that I wouldn't take the time to address the complaint if I were working on D3 either. People seeing ONE set of shoulder pads in a game filled with an endless plethora of shoulder pads and crying over them? Yeah,...that's laughable.

yea, its used for the sprites
but please, if a only had the link for taht pic when the barb is talking to cain, you would see. if someone has it, plz post.
i never liked the barb, and i do think he looks funny, ut maybe its becouse he was made more tahn 8 years ago. When it comes to armor proportion, d3 armor wins by its Double size.
i açso happen to like those horned helms, especially the bone helm on that barb statue, i think thats badass, but im not talking about this.
imagination does not equal oversized everything

And...?
Yes it picked up some WoW influences.
Some people don't see a problem with that.
]AND this is diablo we are talking about, it should take influence from it self, or games that share with it in term of feel
some people dont see a problem with it, but people that claim a game to stick to its roots have more right imo
but a departure from what was considered the ideal style of diablo to a more wow-influenced style is very apparent. This is not opinion.
No you are right, this is not an opinion. This is what happens when you shut down a whole branch of your company who work independently and restart the project with the same talent that made Warcraft and Starcraft. This style you are referring too isn't so much influenced by WoW, but more so by Blizzard, and not Blizzard North.
The departure of the "ideal" style so to speak happened when Blizzard North shut down. On that note I don't think that Blizzard North's style was Ideal for Diablo, only different. It's what we are used to and so we consider it ideal, but I like the way Diablo3 seems to be shaping up and think the new art (Blizzard style) will fill in nicely.
Did you bother reading the definition of an opinion? Are you just completely stupid?
Theyre are factual influences that even blizzard has admitted to. The amount may be opinion, but the influence to some degree is factual buddy.

agreed. Blizzard north's style was what i preferred, and what was utilized, which is why i included the term 'considered'. Blizzard now considers the new style ideal for diablo, no matter the disagreement of a portion of the diablo fan community.
I consider the newer style "ideal", hence the newer style isn't any "more wow-influenced" than my "ideal" style, hence still opinion.
"What WAS considered the ideal", please take note of the utilization of past tense form; Diablo 1 and Diablo 2 were made in this style, it was considered ideal at the time. The newly considered ideal style is influenced by blizzards work on warcraft 3 and wow. This isnt opinion, its what blizzard was and is doing. Its what they considered ideal, and the change in what they now consider ideal.
No, you are taking an OPINION and presenting it as FACT. Past tense doesn't make any difference whatsoever.
You seem to think I'm arguing that the "wow-izing" of D3 is opinion, when that isn't the case.
then you are arguing against me for something i wasnt stating.
Unless you are arguing that my assumption that blizzard makes their games in the style they consider ideal is opinion. Which I guess it could be, but it would be a bit idiotic to create a game in the style you you dont think is best for your motives. So while an assumption, it is a rather safe one.
Anything else your arguing against is something you read into what I stated, not what is actually in there.
I disagree. I feel that Warcraft isn't the influence, but that the artists bringing their style to the game is. I think they felt that this was the next natural evolution of the Diablo series. What they've done will give the game more replayability and help it branch out of being yet another bland dungeon crawler.
No I'm not saying imagination = oversize everything, however it would be hard to argue that there is not a good bit of imagination that went into the D3 barbarian concept art and the armor itself.
I'm simple saying that having big "over sized" horns on a belt or a helmet isn't bad or ridiculous is just a style, a choice. Obviously some people are going to like it and some are not, as is the case with all style choices.

Because "excellent" is a opinion that no one can agree on.

Actually we've seen 2 different sets. One on the Barbarian page, and one in the gameplay.
That's true. I was thinking mostly about the gameplay video. I forgot people flipped out over the webpage armor as well.
