People people, lets just push the envelope of a Darker/Gloomier/Scarier atmosphere in areas where there is no debate they should belong; e.g. Dungeons/Caves/Cellars.
Hell they can even bring back light radius just for these specific areas if need be. I want to be scared going into a dungeon or cellar, like i should be.
and on the contrary
Lets accept and appreciate the artistic talents and expressions of outside themed worlds/areas of the Blizzard team. Themed areas like act 2 and 3 in diablo II give much more memorable sections of the game, and allow you to decipher them a lot easier from places like act1, act 4, and act 5.
look, the cinematic we saw was rated M cause WWI08 was M rated. I want blood. Where's the blood splatters everywhere and the corpses on the floor? and the raging fires?
In hell and later in the game most likely. If not then I'll be a little upset. However just becasue you didn't see this in the trailer doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Which is what people seem to be forgetting here.
You know what? The most thing i would change are TEXTURES, which are very poor and too smooth. There is also too CLEAN. I don't know if you noticed that. It looks like 50 years before Diablo actually first time came... I don't know how you could be happy with that when you played Diablo so long. Well.. you maybe didn't pay attention to graphics. It's POSSIBLE. Then you can vote on leaving everything as it is. But you are right too, i would like to see MORE, coz now i see a fragment. But from what i can see i don't like what i wrote in THIS post mostly. About colours i can live. Coz i know that there will be more dark places (but i don't know on the other hand.. there is GREEN everywhere, and you can see a monster from 20km away, how could you be possibly scared?). No no no, first option is some kind of misunderstanding for me. The last option, yes. It's good too. People should vote on that if they are not sure (but i don't know how they are not. Maybe they just didn't think about it deeper).
Cheers, i have nothing against you
I will agree with you on the textures.. they seem a little low resolution and lack detail. I also noticed a lack of shaders in the trailer as well. However that may also just be because this was an early build? A lot of the graphic optimizations and details are added in latter towards release.
- A darker, gothic, cryptic and creepier environment.
- A more realistic artistic direction, more independent from the Warcraft universe art direction.
- Darker dungeons without a blue/green environment, Diablo dungeons are dark and shadowy.
- The return of the light radius / shadow system from Diablo 1 and 2, a concept modified picture made by me roughly shows and suggests how the shadow system should work on Diablo 3: http://i31.tinypic.com/2zta5o7.jpg
- Slightly less colorful and less vivid outside scenarios, they are too heavily influenced by the World of Warcraft ones.
- And most importantly: An independent and renewed artistic direction, not a recycled art direction taken from the Warcraft world, Diablo never was meant to be as cartoon'ish as Warcraft, they shall have independent and distinct styles, this isnt happening in Diablo 3, at first sight it looks like a remake of World of Warcraft, graphically and artistically speaking.
in my honest opinion, im from venezuela and i love play d2lod, i dont want titans quest, i dont want World of Diablo game, i dont want Warcraft in D3 man!!! come on!!! i play starcraft, warcraft 3 (i just dont play WoW coz i dont like the kid style). the 2nd and 3rd option are above the first one, even if people think that blizz is rocking with this baby diablo the only thing i can say is: blizzard should notice that 50% of ppl who loves diablo dislikes this Baby Diablo 3 you are doing. i love you guys but im not getting pleased, Diablo 3 = a Better Diablo 2 LOD.
Baby Diablo 3 = World of Warcraft/ Diablo kid style, this sucks man!!
Greetings From venezuela to all the diablo comunity
I would also like to add (I already made a length post) that I would like to see more of a return of certain objects on the "map" that really enhance that horrific feel I was talking about. Examples of what I'm talking about are; Dead Rogues put on poles/lying dead on the ground, Trapped souls in Act 4, and other things like that ... I hope I got my point across, I've already typed a lot on the subject
I believe a happy medium should be found. It looks great, don't get me wrong... but I think that (from what is seen in the gameplay trailers) it should be a bit less saturated, and have a lot more areas that are dark.
I don't want to be sure of what is around every corner that is on my screen...
I also think that it could be be bump-maped a bit more.
Having a light radius that is wider than what we have seen in the previous games might help this out.
Now- this all being said... if you guys already have dungeons that are dark, and a day/night cycle...where day is not so spooky...and night time IS... keep it up. You know what you're doing.
The game has lowish res/textures because it is meant to be played on a wide array of computes, so that millions of people can play it and not just people with good computers.
I for one will be maxing this game out like crazy and having much joy in doing so

Everybody on hells charred earth wants that. I don't think blizzard is going to forget that.
Actually, FOH, according to the pollsm the majority of "true" Diablo fans aren't that put off by the graphics. Sure "we" want it to be darker, but the game's really not that bright, and would never be compared to WoW if this wasns't a Blizzard game .. If would definately be compared to Titan Quest, Fate, Dungeon Seige, and other games like that ..... Definately not WoW though. That's an overexaggeration, in my opinion, of the worst kind.
OK. My thoughts on the art direction so far are as follows.
The game is brighter, which isnt a bad thing, its just different. I think they should keep the indoors or underground areas dark dank wet and nasty feeling like in diablo II, but make the towns and outdoor environments much like what they look like in diablo III. As for the character modeling, they seem fine to me. The characters look more colorful and i can somewhat see where they are going when people say "cartoonish". However, i dont think this will be an issue if blizzard keeps to diablo II's theme by making the armor visceral and gritty looking.
All in all, I like the direction they are heading. Its not too colorful, but it adds depth to a game that was lacking color previously. Keep the armor and underground/indoor themes dark and nasty and that combined with the brighter outdoor/city scenarios will make the game look very nice.
Also, if MD reads this post and it actually gets read to blizzard, I just have one quick question, it may have been previously asked, i apologize if this is the case.
Will you be able to show your characters face rather than being hidden behind a helmet the whole game?
Thanks.

I really really liked the overall graphic style of what we have seen from Diablo 3 so far. My complains aren't toward the overall graphics or the use of colors, but the way how everything is textured.
Everything seems to be painted, WoW-style, instead of using textures with materials making use of normal mapping, specular reflections, etc. That's what makes me think of WoW, when I see the details on the assets, and how the muscles on the Barbarian are painted and don't react with lighting. Not the overall use of colors.
I know that perfectly But i just HOPE that there will be some option to choose, that i can choose to have good graphics, and for those who have Amiga 500, well, they can play like we seen on gamplay ^^ (hehehe, i'm jokking, but the graphics are really very poor, comparing to Titan Quest which was a lot earlier with better graphics).
I want that option and i'm good
PS:
< it's some kind of joke, right?
Titan Quest had graphics NO WHERE near as good as what we have seen in D3.
I've been waiting for Diablo III for a long time. And I have to say that while the gameplay looks to live up to everything I've hoped for, I'm thrown off by the lack of grit in the visuals.
I do actually work as a professional visual effects artist, and the WoW style, low poly 3D is so unflattering for the artwork. Couldn't we use some Displacement or Normal Mapping at least.
I don't think there is an easy solution to the problem. The 2D work of Diablo 2 ended up being gritty because it was imperfect, pixellated, kinda LoFi.........it felt genuine...and a bit underground. How to translate this into a fully 3D environment will be challenging. But it needs to be done, the world of Diablo needs some dissonance and chaos, more contrast, grain, and crushed blacks.
It's hard to put into words really...its just lacks the epic feel......try harder on this one Blizzard...the right materials/shaders will take this game from great to AWE-INSPIRING..
Overall I thought it was excellent, and I think that they are doing a great job.
I am a perfectionist though, and if I was being ultra critical then i would say it could do with being a tad darker/creepier/gothic and a tad less Warcraft 3/WOW looking.

If you look carefully, that's what makes most of the WoW-look.
I'm almost sure this decision was taken by Blizzard to make everything run super fast on low-end PCs, but I really would have loved to see the graphics from D2 taken to real 3D, current graphic hardware really can pull it off.
I don't think a diffuse or emissive-only shader is fast enough compared to a simple diffuse/normal map shader with a single light interaction to have all of us pay the price.
Just look how UE3 dynamic lighting works on characters. They don't have to make a mesh to interact with X lights, they just take the overall lighting around a character and approximates it to a single directional light + skylight. It's very cheap rendering and much more realistic than an emissive only material.

its not bad when they have some color but i dont think they should chagit it to much
there are 2 problems
1. i didnt like how the ww looked it kind of looks cartoonish
2. the necromancer shouln't be replaced by the witch doctor
but overall great job on the game

I don't think you need to worry about that... judging from the level of violence in the game.
@SPAZ
I don't know about all your points.. I mean poison was bright green in D2 and there were lots of glowing effects for spells. (Paladin anyone).
I think whats throwing everyone off might be the bloom... or softness of the images. Maybe the lack of detail/bump mapping in some of the textures.
If you look carefully, that's what makes most of the WoW-look.

A) to be slightly darker (not as much as some people say in this thread)
to be slightly less cartoony
C) to remove giant shoulder pads from the game altogether. They're unrealistic and would serve no purpose in real life combat.
