Ok, everyone.
Don't get me wrong.
I love Horror movies, Listen to Heavy Metal, and 90% of the time wear black. AND I Loved Diablo 2 mostly for the dark atmosphere. BUT, think about it this way....
We've only seen two places. I believe blizzard wants to convey many different emotions all throughout the game. You can't expect EVERYWHERE to be dark and gritty. They've had 20 years of peace. You just can't expect the whole world to turn dark in an instant. They want a very eclectic color scheme. And they all aren't bright, there are some pretty dark looking places. I'm just saying you shouldn't get all up in arms so quickly.
When you heard the announcement, how happy were you? Has it already faded? Well then I guess you really didn't deserve it if you wanna bitch so much. Sure, I voted some areas coud be tweaked, but it's really not that bad at all. I'm jovial.
Well your optimism is welcomed but one of the 2 areas was a clearly defiled catacomb of sorts with skeletons and creepy shit shouting at your face trying to rip it off. What it looked like wasn't exactly a pant-wetting dark, desecrated place...
Emotions are wonderful things. There's a thin line between any of them, love can turn to hate as much as hate can turn to love. Right now I'm loving and hating it in rapid succession. I love what they've shown us so far but most of it looks un-diabloish.
About the textures, they might be high-res, but the detail is nigh impossible to see, mainly because there isn't any. It's all very smooth and all.. it doesn't exactly help.
The part that frightens me is that the developers talk about the game as if they've achieved something they were going after for a long time. That REALLY doesn't sound good.
I believe people wouldn't be complaining so much if the textures on said "cartoony" models were realistic and detailed.
Exactly.

Diablo II
Perfect example of how detailed, gritty, defined, realistic Diablo's textures are.
It's still day time, but it there is no hand-painted textures, or exaggerated cartoon characters.

Staggering. We all wait quite literally years for this game to be announced, and when it finally does, the overwhelming whinging about graphics defies belief. A Blizzard developer could be forgiven for wanting to throw in the towel right now, since it seems that nothing would ever be good enough? I imagine the majority of fans have watched the 20 min gameplay video, and yet so little praise for what we've seen? Such a shame that so many would choose to bitch and moan to such an extent that it overshadows what promises to be a great game.
I, clearly a minority, was fully and completely satisifed by what we've been shown. The game looks absolutely true to what's gone before, whilst innovating and adding finesse in all the right places. I completely disagree with the criticisms of too much colour, or that the graphics are cartoony. Guess what? You want it darker or with less colour? You'll find a handy set of buttons on your monitor, to twiddle your brightness/contrast/saturation to your heart's content. As for "cartoony", I genuinely have no idea what people are referring to. Watching the gameplay video, there's nothing of the sort, and I thought it was a bad joke when I first read comments implying so.
Aside from the fact that I think D3 currently looks great, have people completely forgotten what the long history of video games has taught us? i.e. gameplay is key. Without it, you have nothing. Games that endure over time, do so on playability alone. Tetris being a prime example. So why not actually have a little faith in a company that has got it so exceptionally right in the past, that they'll do so again.
Oh and lastly, to those that wish to bleat on about it being "my game" or "our game", please grow up. If you really can't let it go that you think you know better than an incredibly talented team of developers, do everyone a favour and either put your money where your mouth is and do it better yourself, or shut up and exercise your right to simply not buy the game if the graphics are such a big deal to you that they'll ruin your enjoyment.
p.s. This isn't directed at everyone, and critiquing is all well and good, and perfectly healthy. This is more for the benefit of the never-happy, always-know-better fanboys who will forever wish for a game that's completely new and exciting in every way, and yet magically exactly the same as what went before. Get a grip.
Exactly. OBVIOUSLY Diablo 3 will be above other H&S games in case of items, gameplay etc. BUT for the graphics it does look the same as every other game now.. MORE, it looks even worse
man you guys need to put down your lost vikings cereal bowls and WoW noob bashing gear and enjoy the announcement for a second before you start complaining. I think it looks awesome. It still looks like diablo to me. besides there are like 20 screenshots and a gameplay video that shows part of one little dungeon and a little grassy area right outside that dungeon. I like the art style a lot, I don't think it looks like wow at all. just accept the fact that it's not a diablo ii expansion pack and I think you'll start to feel a little better about it.

...
The graphical aspect of the game (as far as textures, models, and post-processing fx & plugins are concerned) is not, in any sense, the biggest hurdle in producing a game, and can easily be interchanged with little modification of the actual game engine.
It's the game's engine, design, and game-play elements which take so long to develop and perfect. I'm sure 99% of the people complaining about the "fluffy" or "clean" ambiance are perfectly fine with the game-play design elements. It wouldn't be too hard for blizzard to substitute some textures, develop some post-processing filters (for contrast, HDR, etc. -- not necessary however), and re-reduce the high-res character/armor models to something a little less polygonal.

The argument of "only having seen two-zones" is fairly moot. One of the zones was called "Forgotten Tombs", a place which should look aged, dark, and creepy. The screens show an all-too-familiar clean-edged, washed-out, almost water-color style that is highly reminiscent of other Blizzard-produced games.
And it's generally better for the target audience to voice opinions at an earlier stage of development to allow for easier modification.
It's not that any of us don't appreciate Blizzard's work. On the contrary, virtually all of us would gladly give a hefty-hug to each of the developers. Many of us are just concerned about the direction the graphical aspect of the game is taking, and would like Blizzard to know that a large portion of their original player demographic has reservations about it.

We praised the gameplay, it plays like Diablo and more.
According to some people, when the Starcraft fans complained of the looks, Blizzard didn't throw in the towel, they tweaked Starcraft 2's looks. (I don't know if this is true or not)
Changing the brightness on your monitor doesn't add polygons to character models or enviroment, and it doesn't add detail to bland textures.
We're not talking gameplay. No one in this thread even mentioned gameplay but you and other people who keep telling the fans to suck it up graphics wise. This thread was created to discuss graphics, not gameplay.
There's a difference between a fan and fanboy. A fanboy will buy dung on a platter if Blizzard carved "Diablo 3" on the dung. A fan knows what made Diablo, Diablo. Diablo was the gameplay, which is there, but it was also the looks, which we're discussing in this here trhead.

Well, I for one enjoyed the announcement. I found myself dumbshot after seeing all the footage, but an hour or so after, there was this little niggling doubt in the back of my head, that maybe I wasn't so impressed after all. I checked all the footage again, and it hit me, like a foot in the family jewels, it didn't "look" right. I've played Mythos and I was genuinely pleased with it's graphics because it fits it's universe, D3's on the other hand in my opinion does not. Call me a whiner but at least I'm not being a stiff prick about the whole matter *cough*
When I woke up the other morning and checked the internets I was absolutely speechless. I was out-of-control-happy, my lifelong dream of a game is coming true, I was ranting about it to everyone, spreading the word. I still like it, un-gritty graphics or not.
And speaking about praise, it's being pumped out by the truckload. Don't actually see much complaining or whining on the whole.
I want a real earth map not this WOW map...

I still believe the diversity presented is better then just having everything goth gray overshaded. Plus it'll get boring staring into the same damned textures over and over. Plus, last I checked, the world has color and not all dark n' gloomy. While a fantasy game, its more believable this way. Go into a church or old monestary and look around, it's not one shaded.
be realistic like previous

all i have to say is this is d3 not d2, if you want the game to be exactly like d2 in look and feel go play d2. theres no point in spending millions of dollars to make the exact same game. its called evolution people.

Fallout 2 was 2D and ugly but *realistic*, Fallout 3 became 3D and *realistic* (plus it looks amazing).
