People still buy and still play it as well. I am a testament to that. I just got D2 a few months ago.
I think D2 was the fastest selling game of the year of release, and maybe even the decade?
They've built themselves a legacy, but can they live up to it?
The way things are going with WoW I'm going to say no. Appeals to the commercial side of things, strangifing the lore, and all the other things I dislike about the game.
Now, I'm only really saying this and only voted that way to be devil's advocate for a bit. Still, its something to think about.
Can Blizzard live up to the legacy?
I'm hoping yes, and all ready super excited for D3, even though there has been no word. It most likely will be worth it.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.

well doom (dn3d,...) is 2.5 because the levels are 3d but the items (guns, ammo, pickups,..) and the enemies are sprites.
but i dont know who came up with 2.5D
2.5D doesn't mean that, it means that the 3D-like area is generated on a 2D plane. In DooM I, you couldn't look up or down. In Heretic you could (same engine). Looked weird because it was all skewed. Because it's not really 3D. And in DooM Builder that makes levels for it, you can't make it 3D, you can make walls and sectors but it's a 2D plane still.
It's like making your sword move along your mouse, but the sword would be a 3D object in a 3D plane, but your mouse is 2D, so it messes up. DooM didn't allow to look up or down for a reason.
And Doomsday is 3D, and there is no problem with mouse look anymore. Unless you mess up the FoV, lol. It looks creepy with messed up FoV.

but i dont know who came up with 2.5D
I did. It was funny for me how people were talking about Diablo not being 3D so I asked them.
it may have only an imaginary or fake z plane since z plane exists outside of a 2D plane which is probably why it's one of the 25d cases.
In real life there are all major dimensions (0,1,2,...4,8,44,666,9999999, n, +++), and there are fractal dimensions. Someone can go and say that a fractal dimension 2.5D exists between dimensions 2 and 3. It most probably exists except I don't think anyone knows how exactly is it defined. But I know for sure that DooM is not written in a fractal dimension, lol. I imagine a fractal dimension engine, that 'll be sick. But DooM has NOTHING to do with real or fractal dimensions, it's virtual only. I'm not even completely sure that 3D games are fully 3D, it's more of a strange virtual 3D... Anyway, I read about fractal geometry here: http://www.fractalwisdom.com/FractalWisdom/fractal.html
Because that is what it says: "Another well known fractal dimension lies between a line and a plane, the first and second dimension. It is called the Sierpiniski Gasket after mathematician Waclaw Sierpiniski and has a fractal dimension of 1.58. Create it by starting with an equilateral triangle and remove the open central upside down equilateral triangle with half the side length of the starting triangle. This leaves three half size triangles. Then repeat the process on the remaining half size triangles, and so forth ad infinitum. The remaining form has infinite lines but is less than a plane."
1.58, see? Isn't that sick? I love that stuff, it's so confusing.
P.S.: and I'm not sure if all the major dimensions aren't a fractal of something... lol
Oo i think my heads gonna explode
btw congrats to you being a knight.
Yeah... I had a math project devoted to fractals, and until now I considered them something a little more than pretty pictures... I found out a lot more than I expected, so I'm going to look into it seriously... draw some L-system fractals, maybe... I wonder if people use IFS in games to draw vegetation, for all I know, they could, IFS are cheap, add color and detail to them, and you have the most realistic and detailed tree ever. Look at this: http://www.diablo3.com/forums/vbpgimage.php?do=full&p=611&d=1172811088
It's a fractal. It's a function that goes and goes and repeats itself. It's one thing repeated over, and it's a leaf. Cool, huh?
Aw... I was so proud of myself being the active member with least posts.
nice, a bit artificial though, but very cheap to make.
there are very complex fractal images, and they go into eternity, and somehow reallife (cells, universe,..)tries to be fractal too.
i also have a vegetation program lying around here somewere, forgot name of it though.
damn we need to get back on topic somehow
It is as artificial as any FarCry bush is. Sprite bushes are a lot more artificial, if you ask me. Not to mention that if you take a number of fractals of the sort and jumble them up, you can get trees with bent leaves and stuff and it's still going to cost a nuisance.
Yeah, this is the last post I will make about fractals. In this thread.
OK, let's see...
I will probably disagree with whoever suggested that due to WoW, Blizzard will head toward more commercial games. I'm not so sure. WoW may be a money game. I know these two companies - KDV and KD-Labs. They work together and share profit. KDV makes commercial games, KD-Labs makes the good games. Maybe Blizzard was just gatherring money to make the other projects better.
Those are just my vs. hopes, though, because I still have the same fear that Diablo III will be the case of WarCraft III - the game most old gamers won't recognize.
i think the real question is will it be worth the amount of time we have to wait. i dont even see it getting released 2008 let alone this year. ofcourse it will be good but will it be worth the years of anticipation?
off topic: fractals pwn, worked on them in ap calc b/c I had finished all the lessons long before the semester was up. I'm an artist and personally a math that allows you to draw is my forte...
on topic: It sucks to wait this long but i know it will be worth the wait. diablo 2 blew me away and i'm positive diablo 3 will do the same. I do beleive, however, that if blizzard waits too long the modern graphics will have far surpassed anything that diablo can offer. With the new graphics/physics engine blizzard has purchased though, the wait will most likely allow my pos computer to catch up.
But WoW is a good thing. What other game has gained more attention in the media than WoW, and no just negative. I'm sure GTA tops WoW when it comes to negative publicity, but including the good?
I don't know about most american news papers, but I've seen a fair share of WoW in national Swedish papers.

WOW was on south park, i dont remember an episode that had GTA, but i definitely remember the WOW episode.

Media coverage and publicity aren't nessecarily very good things. In this case I don't think that it really matters.
I just don't like WoW. Its a mediocre game that, I think, tarnishes Blizzard's reputation. Really, most of my hesitations for future Blizzard games comes from the fact that WoW was boring.
Of course, I've also been finding most MMOs really don't please me too well (combat is so boring. Click once and watch the show!) so I don't think its just WoW.
I still don't like it.
And about the 2D-3D debate, Doom is three dimensional. There are X, Y, and Z axises. There is front-back, left-right, and up-down.
However, due to limits in the engine it isn't rendered in a way where looking up and down will still give you a real-life image. Essentially what it does (as seen in Heretic, and Hexen I believe, but also Doom-engine Ports like zDoom) is skew the picutre, like was said before.
However, if the game was really only in 2d, then how can you have stairs and upper and lower levels? These all have data on the Z-axis, telling them how high to be. But, because of another limit in the engine, you (essentially) can't have two planes "on top" of each other. So basically, you can make a bridge that goes acorss the river, but nothing can be under that bridge.
Now THIS WHOLE POST was way off topic, so... yeah, sorry.
I'll end it with this: Blizzard will come out with Diablo III eventually, and it is going to be good unless the make it an MMO. Thats just how its going to be. It will be worth the wait because, really, we can't help but wait. And its not like we can't enjoy other things while we wait, anyway.
Ah its a long wait the way it is right now but do you think blizzard is going to put anything out untill WOW is dig into the dirt im thinking there mantaining the severs for WOW. Untill its goes under i doubt D3 is going to be out on the shelfs for some time and the whole "We are going to send and email to blizzard demanding answers". Thats not going to work they will release something when there are good and ready to. Just think about ALL the millions of people awaiting D3 if they were going to release it they would have said something by now. But who knows i just wanted to get this out there becasue it seems like you people are going crazy for this "GAME" dont get me wrong played LOD athousand times over and would like something new but i dont think its going to be out for years yet its still one of the all time best games and Blizzard might not want to ruin its rep if the follow up isnt to par with the last installment. I only made this account to say this so you can talk all the Sh%^ you want i wont be reading it so your wasting your time

It was (was in Guinness Book of World Records) until The Burning Crusade beat all the competition by light years.
Seeing as they've hardly ever failed, no one assumes they will. That however, as you say, is no guarantee, just an indicator.
Darned Burning Crusade!
