The whole side quest experience has been soured for me I suppose. Too involved and it should just be a real quest, part of the story. Not involved enough and it's boring/silly. Like go from point A to point B, kill xx yy in zzland, etc. I didn't much care about Diablo pve though.
That's not typically the kind of side quests that are in Diablo.
Diablo side quests usually had a interesting story of their own. Like the moon stone from Diablo 1 you needed to forge a weapon. I think The Butcher was a side quest also.
D2 you had The Countess, things like that.
They were just fun to learn a little more about the story.
Ah, I didn't consider the countess etc as side quests. Completing the unneccessary quests was well worth your while, and tied in directly with the story of the act.

Well I considered them side quests especially the countess. You could play through act one and not even realize you didn't do the countess quest. It didn't effect the story or you being able to go to the next act.
I don't know why someone would say no. The more side quests the more game play.
I do. Its one of the things that made Diablo great. You didn't feel like someone's errand boy. I don't want to collect vegetables for some local farmer or pick up talbuck shit. If you want an assload of quests thats what WoW is about. Diablo is about doing quality quests, not quantity.

thats what daemaro meant!
If all side-quests in D3 are in assimilatude with "Countess" type quests, then it will make them all the worth while.
If this is the route Blizz is takin with D3, then we're in for an awesome game!
I do wonder if they could have a databank of randomly generated side-quests, like what froggie said. You know dungeons and stuff are always differant, how about differant side quest every time with a few constanats... the replaability would be massive

Side quests shouldn't detract from gameplay. If you don't want to do them you shouldn't have to. So while all of us are "collecting vegetables" you can grind for your levels like you would normally be doing.

That is not what i meant by more side quests at all, I think that two or three more quests per act that have to do with the storyline would be great. Especially so to make sure another act 4 does not happen ( not saying it was bad ) it just felt to me like act 4 could have had a lot more done to it.
sidequests would give the game a lil more juice after playing it on one mode and they should make 1000 sidequests that you cant replay so you can start where you left off in nightmare and hell

Not even Death will save you from Diablo Bunny's Cuteness!
But quest aren`t only for xp.... There have to be quests ofr rewards other than just xp and lewt. In D2 that was a good choice, some quests gave you a skill point, another gave you atribute, resistance...etc. Get it out of your head, quests aren`t only for xp, they are for fun, just like the whole game should be...
Ok, I don't know if that was directed at me but I still want side quests.
Even if they give a item, some exp form the monsters, a skill point, whatever.
I like the storyline of side quests. In WoW the side quests suck and are boring but in D2 the countess had it's own story behind it and made me feel like they put some real thought into the world besides the main storyline.
Not only at you, but from your last post I think I doesn`t at all have to include you. Side quests are good for the storyline and the atmosphere, +1 on that ;]
Just trying to clarify what I meant by side quests.
Plus, you could start some side stories going on. Maybe Leah has a romantic interest, and Leah and that guy goes off on there own adventure in some turn based RPG ala Breath of Fire 1 and 2.
Correct, plus a few others, due to them being interconnected
-Act 1 the only quest you have to do is quest 6 (andariel)
-Act 2 the only quests you have to do is 2,3 and 6. Unless it is single player, then you have to do 2,3,4 and 6
-Act 3 the only quests you have to do is 5 and 6. Unless it is Single player, then you have to do 3, 5 and 6.
-Act 4 the only quest you have to do is quest 3.
-Act 5 the only quest you have to do is quest 6. Unless it is Single Player, then you have to do 5 and 6.
That means out of 30 quests you only have to do 8 (11). That leaves 22 (19) side quests in D2. 8/30. Thats 26.66% That means that about 3 quarters of the quests in the game are side quests or optional. At least in multiplayer as there are ways around things they cannot be done in Single Player. Such as having someone else open the portal to the Canyon of the Magi for you.
There are 16 quests in Diablo 1. And the only two that have to be done are The Archbishop Lazarus, and Diablo. That's 12.5% of all the quests in the game. that are story related. You could argue that Lachdanan and warlord of Blood are story related, but since they are randomly appearing quests you might not get one of them, thus the quest you do not get will not affect the story.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
While they may have been optional, they weren't exactly side quests.
And just because it's optional doesn't mean the developers intended for it to be independent of the story.
Side quests would be totally different from quests you could just choose to skip for whatever reason. I guess you could say they add flavor to the meat. And certainly a much needed variety and openness to an otherwise scripted world. Which contrary to what most people have been told, Diablo II was very scripted (hence its leaning towards action/adventure moreso than RPG)

It will be awesome if they'll add side quests to the game, so i'm positive for it
