i just got d3 yesterday and im a level 20 dh. i was just wondering when crafting becomes important, like should i get my artisan level up right away or what? I got a legendary plan for a bow and it says i need artisan level 4 in order for the blacksmith to make it, so i guess i was just wondering the easiest way to level that up and when to really worry about crafting things. any input would be helpful!! thanks
Crafting can become very important depending on your class but mainly at max level - you most likely will level so quickly that you outlevel your blacksmith to start so enjoy the drops and the story line! It's very good!

Alright cool that's what I was thinking, the drops have been decent throughout the story!
For crafting, you will need to upgrade your artisan, and after that you need mats and gold.
To craft a legendary, you will need to salvage 2 legendaries first (for the mats), and the plan. So, it is hard already to get the mats to craft them, and the plans only drop for your level. Often, by the time you can craft with them, you can already find better yellows.
Since crafting is still hard to get a good yellow, and pretty expensive, I wouldn't bother.
My suggestion: don't worry about artisans, sell all your drops, and when you really need better items, remake games and check the vendors, you are guaranteed what you get (only buy good things), and they can be as good as crafted items anyway.
Not necessary but blacksmith is very helpful leveling. Every 8 lvl or so a new weapon becomes available to craft and these are most likely to be what you would use unless you get lucky with drops. Also one your lvl 43? i think it is you can level your bs to 10 and then you can try to craft a lvl 60 weapon with as much -lvl req as possible. Which is an insane dps increase. Same thing once you hit 61 and get some deaths breath you can try and craft a lvl 70 with - lvl req. JC and Mystic are not needed til your 70.
- There are two points between 1-70lv you will like to had upgraded your smith:
1) Lv 23 - for Cain's set : Blacksmith lv 5 is enough. (Bonus xp is most wellcome when leveling. You will like it. Craft a set and keep it until lv 70. If you will level up another char, use the same set, doesn't need to craft a new one).
2) Lv 60 - For a better weapon : Blacksmith lv 10 (Sometimes lv61 gears you will find are not so good as the crafted ones).
- If its is your 1st char (as it seems to be), you will need good gems too, so level up Shen's shop every 5 lv you up you char.
- Unless you really like to look fashioned, you will not need to upgrade the mystic until lv 70. But remember, you will unlock her only at act 5 campaign mode, or if a friend invites you to an adventure mode game.
About crafting... If you will be a hardcore crafter, you will need to stock every blues and legendary you find along your path. Yellow ones are pretty easy to find, but blues becomes more and more difficult at high levels. Some recipes are awesome to craft. other ones are just crap to be collected and get an achieve of teach X recipes to Y ally.
Some builds uses heavily crafted items, take a look at some build descriptions at the front page and enjoy crafting the perfect item you need! ^^
