Although Blizzard had reduced the mats and cost to craft items through Blacksmith it is still not to the degree where it makes Blacksmithing even remotely viable, I mean to spend 30,000 to craft a level 60 item gear compared to the auction house. It is still pointless to make any items through Blacksmithing.
The cost to craft gear once again needs to be dramatically reduced.
there are ways to make money with smithy. they require luck. if you prefer playing the AH to farming, might i suggest five and six property heaven strands
now is a great time to gamble on smithy, as the IAS changes have made formerly less than stellar items more valuable.
try rolling a 155sta/mainstat 60 resist all belt with some magic find and live% for a massive 15m+ even if you strike out on like twenty belts beforehand. it takes a large initial investment and some luck, but after hundreds of rolls i'm up on the AH, and it has not been nearly as tedious as farming the same damn goblin for 30 hours. i never thought i'd say this, but standing at the smithy naked except for runspeed gear and rolling 2 million in high end items is actually more exciting than playing the game on inferno =P
Blacksmith = Gambling. Also, it's there for people who, for whatever reason, want to level a toon w/o the AH. Just because you don't get much out of it doesn't mean it's a worthless feature. Different people play different ways.
a few hundred dollars in mats or gold or items or a combo of them, privately traded through sources from forums like epicnpc and carefully resold can start a snowball rolling. if you are patient and willing to get the calculator and google docs out, you can make a little cash or at LEAST end up fully gearing your character for free. blacksmithy is a great way to do this QUICKLY. sure its a bummer to blow 2m rolling the dice and get a bunch of shitty strength belts, but that ONE nasty item that sells in five minutes at 30m makes it worth it.
for me, this is a lot less painful than grinding 1 goblin for three days and hoping i get a nice legendary neck while being DC'd constantly by blizzards shitty servers and losing valor stacks farming, and other crap out of my control. it takes no effort to simply trade on the forums at lower prices than the AH lists and make some good connections, then start up the conveyor belt crafting factory
but, to each his own. and yes, i do agree that the game is most definitely geared towards AH-minded players. its been said to death but really it is the entire point of the game now. tbh if i did not like active trading and the auction house very much, i would've already stopped playing =P
The BS is not supposed to be an alternative to trading with players. Did you play DII? Did gambling replace the need to trade for items? No, it supplemented trading and, if you were lucky, could work out nicely for you. THIS IS NOTHING NEW. Stop pretending that the BS is something it was never intended to be.
also: you'll want to constant spam trade/general that you're buying Fine/Grand armor patterns. spam the forums too. you never know when you'll find a newb willing to sell you grand vambraces for like 5m. they routinely go for 20
the first patterns you'll wanna buy that are cheap but actually worth rolling:
grand wiz hat
the fine glove pattern if you get lucky and find it cheap (gogo crit/crit dmg!!)
fine heaven strand (belt)
grand wiz source spheres whatever they're called
grand ghost sight
all are usually under 1m per pattern, and i've rolled 25% +life ghost sights(socketed with 8% natural or higher) with resist all, dex, and spirit regen that i've gotten 15m for.
its luck guys, but with good tradin' skillz and book keeping you can almost always, if nothing else, break even. with the new repair costs i can't say the same for farming a3 anymore =P
Now if you roll dex on a 2h it's not completely worthless because monks can use all 2h weapons now
in my experience anyway weapons have just not been worth rolling with BS. waaay too many great rolls ruined by a 500dps sheet damage. but i know some people have good luck with crossbows...

Err, I thougth Blizzard said they wanted the BS to be an alternative to the AH, at least during leveling. They mostly failed though, just because prices are so low on the AH, but I thought they said they wanted it to be an alternative.
It's great in my opinion, I even used it before the patch because I do not like using AH as it is not really me who's acquiring the gear, it's basically just cheating in a way at least in my opinion. Now the BS is even better. Now if only they'd add some endgame after clearing Inferno Diablo.
1- The costs for higher lvl items is still high
2- the luck that is involved.
If the cost was lower the random stat thing (which the stats rarely, if ever, line up) wouldn't seem so bad, but throwing high cost and a "winning the lotto" chance of getting something worth while is too much. Even the lotto only costs a buck or 2....

Yes, the 6-affix items were not reduced in cost, but you pay the premium for 6 stats.
