this is fantastic news! Game release is coming very very very soon.
How is this "fantastic news?"
They are ignoring all the outcry about "Battle.net 0.2" and saying that those people don't matter. They are saying that the fans who care about the community and longevity of D3 don't matter. Fuck that.
AND he didn't even say anything new about the release date. Just "homestretch" which we heard from Jay Wilson back in October! COME ON.
I dont think its a matter of caring. If they didn't care they wouldn't have sunk millions of dollars and years of development into a game. What it comes to now is that release is right around the corner and they have x time to do y things. Going in an changing the chat screen just isn't a priority for them right now. We can still get it later but just not yet. When it comes down to it chat is less important them the game.
Not everyone will agree with me but its just the way I think Blizz has to look at it right now. Unfortunately Blizz does not have an infinite amount of time to release the game.
All they care about is releasing the game. And that's what we want!
Honestly no its not. I'd really like to wait and be able to communicate easily to other people and join private channels... To actually see other peoples characters without having to go through menus and their picture taking up a huge chunk in the middle of the screen which blocks me doing other things...
I'm actually very very VERY disappointed with Blizzard right now. The anger and outcry with SC 2's chat channels and we get the same fate. I'm very tempted to just stop buying Blizzard products(after D3 of course).

I dont see how the longevity of the game is going to be accomplished in the first few weeks of a game. This is defiantly a feature that can be polished after the release.
I also love how these statements are so binary. They either hate us completely with no remorse or dont. Never the other way. The key here is to not let up on blizzard after release so the WILL change it.
Everyone saying "it can be fixed/patched later" - people said the SAME THING before SC2 was released. "Oh, don't worry, they'll patch in chat channels after release!" 7 months later, we got the same Facebook style chat we now have in D3.
I don't expect them to improve the chat channels at all after release. No way, it's not going to happen. We are now stuck with Facebook style, tiny font, all white text, no private channels, no row of characters showing off their gear, no re-sizing of the window, etc. etc. etc.
And people are defending this. In 2012. This is the chat we get. In an online only multiplayer game which millions of people are going to be buying. Ridiculous.
I don't have enough time in the day to slay demons and then sit around in chat channels. I surely hope they implement a better chat system in the future for everyone, but if I had to choose the lesser of evils, I'd rather have the game out.
I know some people want chat channels in the game pretty badly, but I'd rather them just get the game out quickly. I never used the chat channels in Diablo 2 and I probably wouldn't use them in Diablo 3. The only in game messaging I did was when I was actually playing the game or when I was talking to someone I knew from outside of the game.
The questions i have to ask is this. Are the chat channels indipendant or dependant on battle.net. With the look and feel of the channel that similar to SC2s I have to wonder if its not Diablo which is at fault or some limitation in the battle.net coding that is.
We've also seen that battle.net features are not entirely based around the release schedule of a game. Features are tied to them but not limited to the same release date. I think this comes from just not knowing how blizz assigns their resources or which system is where.
While the in-game chat channels don't resemble Diablo 2s layout, they still function as they should. They're a little weird to look at, maybe not quite as pleasing to the eye as they could be, but they work.
Yes, they could change them to be some super-awesome thing where everyone who every plays Diablo 3 is happy about the layout, but why bother? You can chat to people in them, there's multiple conversation tabs (monk, barb, trade etc), you can talk to people playing other Blizzard games and more importantly, THEY LET YOU CHAT!
Does it really matter how they look? Or what rooms they have in them? I'm going to be too busy smashing in demon skulls to worry about if the chat is 190 pixels wide, rather than 185. Yes, it's the little things and Blizzard is renowned for it "it's done when it's done" attitude, but the function of the chat works great. Maybe they'll change the looks via a patch, or in an exspansion, but i'd sooner have a game that WORKS than one still in design that you can't even play.

I think it is good to hear that they're almost done and just more worried about little tweaks. That is great news, as for myself I'm fine with the chat system as it is. I want game, and I use vent.
I think that this topic doesn't get enough love because of the vast range of players' ages with D3. I'm part of the old guy group (30+) who aren't against an old D2 style chat system but overall don't really care as long as the game is good. The mock-up chat system posted on these forums and on bnet forums would have been cool to see, but I wouldn't spend all my time there with limited time as it is.
In my opinion, the SC2 playerbase is younger, so a chat system is really important for them and that's why they are up in arms with disappointment.
but in reality who spends that much time in a chat channel rather then in the game to care about what it looks like, i for one could care less about a little feature like that and would rather them be focusing on releasing the game as bashiok said in his post.
I guess this means that we are probably stuck with the current Skill UI as well. I suppose I'd rather play the game with a frustrating UI than not play it at all, but its still disappointing to hear.

People are disappointed about Bnet 0.2 because it's a huge step backwards compared to the social features in older Blizzard titles. The only improvement is the matchmaking system, which I admit is good in SC2 and it works well so far in the D3 beta.
But the lack of community features in SC2 made it feel empty and isolating. There was no way to make new friends while playing a game where millions of other people were playing at the same time.
Already in the D3 beta, people just rush rush rush rush kill kill kill kill in games and no one talks. There is very, very little socializing for an online only multiplayer title.
Also, I'm with you that I'm older now since D1 and D2 and I won't have as much time as I would like to play the game when it finally comes out. But I also don't have any friends in real life who are going to be playing D3. They're all into different hobbies, so I'll be essentially alone in the game. At least in D2, if I was alone, I could go into a lobby and see if anyone wanted to do a Act 1 normal walk or Trist runs or something. And I could help out newbs when I got to a higher level by rushing them or giving them items I didn't need. That sense of community is going right out the window with little Facebook style chat rooms. They are honestly impossible to look at for more than a minute or two without some serious eye strain. It's not typical Blizzard quality, and that's why I'm pissed.

... although not enough to have the game delayed, they should've done this before.

Tell that to the SC2 community
