One of the cool things about Diablo II was that every single class could chose if it wanted to be melee or ranged. Sure not all builds were as successful as others, but the option to play in an unusual way was provided, hence there was alot of room for interesting experimentation with throw barb, melee sorceress, daggermancer etc.
I really hope that this diversity of abilities and builds is preserved in Diablo 3, I really want to be able to play a melee Demon Hunter or a ranged Barbarian. So far I am yet to see any examples of gameplay footage where a character is fighting in a way that is not stereotypical for his class, and I do not recall any skills or passives that point to viable alternative builds. I really hope that once the game comes out, we will not be limited by ironclad melee/ranged classifications (heck it would be cool to do a melee/ranged hybrid Demon Hunter with a sword and an xbow).
Barbarian has some skills that can be used to focus on his ranged aspect: Seismic Slam, Weapon Throw, Earthquake (?), Call of the Ancients (summon?), plus maybe he'll have other runed abilities that become ranged DPS skills, like Ancient Spear.
Plus, from what we know so far, you can put a bow in him, couple those few ranged skills with defensive ones (Ignore Pain, Ground Stomp) or mobility skills (like Leap Attack and Sprint) and go full ranged Barb.
Thanks for the idea. I'll make sure I'll try it if I get to play the beta =]
Melee wizard is possible, from what I can tell. A trap/fan of knives DH might be possible with daggers, it really depends on how runes alter the skills.
How did a ranged Barbarian work in D2? Jeesh, or a melee Sorceress... I never thought about how each class could be up-close or ranged, pretty neat system they ended up with there.

A dagger WD would be pretty awesome.
