I am not an expert at marketing strategy but it seems like Blizzard might put themselves in a bad situation if they pass 4Q of 2011 for their D3 release. As far as platforms are concerned, D3 is going to be released for PC and then consoles few months or years later. The problem that I see is, there are "WAY" too many games that people are anticipating to be released, just like we are for D3. Could this hinder the sales of D3? As much as I love Blizzard games, the truth of the matter is not many people know about them. More people found out about Blizzard with the release of SC2. (Thoes who are not Hardcore gamers)
Lets face it. Casual gamers who play few hours a week are not going to be remember every single game developer company, even if their the biggest one.
The number of casual gamers far outweighs the hardcore gamers. Some people who play 1 hour a day are what we call "Typical gamers" and not a game addict. This is the "Big" target market Blizzard wants to aim for. and of course, they also want to bring in you hardcore Blizzard fans, but they know your going to buy the game anyway.
This is the reason why they make the game more "dumbed" down. A method which will be more appealing to casual gamers.
"Auto-stats, Easier to see follow UI, simple dialogs, Simple Skill tree"
Heck but this all wont matter if these casual gamers get lost in the midst of all these great games coming out in 4Q 2011 to 1Q 2012. This is the golden time of oppertunity.
Some of the highly anticipated games to be released in 4Q 2011 ~ 1Q 2012 are, guild wars 2, Starwars: MMO, and Battlefield 3 and a couple more.
Side Note: [I'm not a big fan of Battlefield 3, But just do be a favor and watch. http://www.youtube.com/user/Battlefield#p/u/2/ekDutunw1mk]
I respect Blizzard's choice and their priorities. But realistically speaking from an economic point of view of the company, they need to speed things up, as I'm guessing they are already.
It comes down to, quality vs quantity. But how much sales would you be suffering just to make the game "tiny" bit better? Delaying 4months ~ 6months is going to be huge this year. It almost should be avoided.
The faster they get "casual" gamers attention with "Beta" and send out the message that this game is indeed coming in 2011, it will create a narrower view for casual gamers to decide on what games to buy.
Whatever happens, happens. But at least they can dictate when they want to sell their products.
And I propose that 4Q 2011 will be the best time of their release, with beta being the "Audience grabber" during 3Q of 2011.
Actually the games you mention aren't really games Diablo III will compete with.
The only game around that time that's competition is Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
I'd also like to comment on the "dumbed down" part of your post. The thing is that Auto-stats doesn't make a difference with what we had in Diablo II. It's already been discussed that all characters used cookie cutter builds. Nobody ever did something different. It was always strength up to what's needed for the items we plan to use and either full on vitality or max block (dex) and then all on vitality.
Easier to use UI isn't dumbing the game down, it's making it a better experience to play.
PS. Star Wars: The Old Republic (MMO) is supposed to be released Q2-Q3 2012, no?
4Q 2011 ~ 1Q 2012 is going to be when All gamers from different RTS, RPG, FPS will be hunting down for a new game.
Think about if D3 was missing on the list.
I used to be a salesman in video games and i can safely assume that people who like FPS and RTS won't be looking for games from other genres. If there's nothing new for their favorite genre they usually go for budget games that received good reviews in the past.
Besides, Blizzard always overhypes their games before the release. Previews in magazines and sites, commercials and more important than everything: fans of the franchise that talk too much to their friends. Think of StarCraft II for example. The timing of the release wasn't ideal, yet it killed off (almost) everything else at that time.
Well the whole "dumbing down" thing has been discussed over and over, and really its hard to say that it'll end up being all that much different than D2. You never really had more than 7 active skills (yea yea, summon necro did), and theres still all the traits to have other differences between characters. As far as auto stats, its not like placing stats was all that interesting. Sure it would add customization, but you can't honestly say that placing points in dexterity or some other stat is what you looked forward to every level (unless you were close to some piece of gear I guess). And even if what Fingol said was not entirely true, its still closer to the truth than trying to say there was huge variations in stats across the board.
As for the release of D3, I don't think its much of an issue when they release it in terms of sales. Despite what you said, I think a lot of people know about Blizzard simply because of WoW. Hell, SC2 had an ad during the NBA Finals and Cataclysm was advertised during the NFL season, not to mention stuff like the South Park episode about it. Simply from the Facebook pages people seem to be interested in Blizzard games (even if D3 does have the least fans). As far as computer games go, their definitely one of the better known companies out there. For Cataclysm they didn't have anything more than a two paragraph announcement saying that it was going to be released on Dec 7 only months before the date. It may not be as popular as, say, Black Ops, but Blizzard usually doesn't have to worry much about competition for releasing their stuff. Not that they won't plan the D3 date or anything.
I don't think that the delay from Q4 2011 to Q1 2012 is going to be as dramatic as you think. If anything, less games are going to be released Q1 2012 than Q4 2011, as most years start off slow after a busy Christmas season (ie this year).
Actually the games you mention aren't really games Diablo III will compete with.

Oh shit, I need to play Skryim too, it looks fuckin' awesome!!!! Two of my favorite games are coming out around the same time... =(

Again like i said, your targeting the "hardcore" gamers. A typical or "casual" gamers don't have a set "GENRE" they only play. They are more mutual on the selection of games they want to try, for what I know, they are willing to try all games out there. It's blizzard's marketing strategy to appeal to thoes casual gamers who might play all different genre.
You think they even know what "FPS" or "RTS" or "RPG" stands for ?
Only targeting thoes people who play "RPG" is a bad strategy from Blizzard is prob not the case.
You need to attract the rest of 6 billion+ population not just 1 million hardcore gamers in the world. probably less.
I disagree. I think casual gamers stick to one genre more than hardcore gamers. Because they don't play a lot of games, they tend to stick to the ones they know they will like. Hardcore gamers understand the differences in game genres and are not afraid of the different playstyle. Although some diehards will only play one genre.
I think that Diablo 3 has very little competition out there. People who want to play D3 will play D3 no matter what other games are out there at the moment. I also think that Blizzard has enough popularity that even casual gamers recognize the name and may be interested in trying Diablo for their first time.

I am a casual gamer, meaning I don't play more then a few hours a week. I will play and buy whatever is fun, even if I don't get to play it as much as I would like. It just means it takes me longer to get to the end game. If a game is really fun, I will play it more and ignore the others.

We'll just have to see.
It's Blizzard's role to attract gamers from different genre.
And one way to do it is, by ads and tons of it. This strategy wont work, if the entire gaming market is flooded with gaming ads that are soon to come; The games I've mentioned before.
I don't think casual or hardcore determines what you play. Most people have their preferences that aren't dependent on how often they've played. Obviously some genres will have more hardcore players than others. Not to mention its unrealistic to think you can attract the entire population of the world.
I think it's true that casual gamers are more likely to find a niche than hardcore gamers are. Mostly because there are just so many more casual gamers, but what I find in hardcore gamers are that they are just flat-out competitive: It doesn't matter all that much what they're competing in, as long as they are and not doing poorly at it. Back onto topic, it's not so much the simplicity-vs-complexity deal that will keep hardcore players or not, but the ability to rise in competition with other players(getting better gear, better skill set ups, better strategies, dueling strategies, ranks, achievements, etc).
As a side note I don't really like the labels of casual and hardcore as I've never fit in with either group descriptions. Semi-hardcore, I suppose? I'll drown myself with hours of game play a day in a game that I'm interested in; it wouldn't matter to do if that game was an RPG, MMORPG, RTS, FPS, etc etc. Shit, the boyfriend and I drop hundreds of hours playing Harvest Moon games, Minecraft, mobile games, and Hack-N-Slash dungeon crawlers, all of which are not generally thought to be played by hardcore but more casual gamers.
Casual gamers: People who play a few hours a week at most.
Daily Casual gamers: People who play about an hour to one and a half hours per day, more if that particular day is rather "rainy."
Gamers: People who play anywhere from 2-4 hours a day.
Hardcore Gamers: People who play 5+ hours a day and generally have a hard time socializing with other people
outside their interests.
___ Sub A: Video Game Addicts: People who work just to support their habits, spend 85% of their time playing games (not including work hours).
Most of us I suspect to be in the Daily Casual gamers to Gamers range.

D3 is not going to be released until Blizzard thinks it is ready. They would like it released today if it was ready.
There is no bad marketing strategy to releasing a game at any time of the year.
The keys to marketing is getting the word out and it is very easy for Blizzard to get the word out since they are one of the big gaming companies out there. I do not think there that many people that have not heard of Blizzard. Granted a lot of that recognition is with WoW but still.
They have the money to place advertising on any medium to great effect if they need to.
The most important marketing medium for them is the fans of Blizzard. Word of mouth is quite often the biggest factor in the sale of product, especially for products after the first week or two of release. Blizzard games sell quite a lot and a good portion of those sales is not in the first week or two but later in the year or even years later. There are still people buying Diablo 1 and Starcraft 1. I am not saying that D3 will follow this path but by looking at the past history it is likely to do the same.
The big thing that Blizzard does not want on a release is the feel that the game is not done (Major Bugs and Crashes) Small minor patch is fine. Patch would likely happen if the game is released within a month of Beta finish, since the disks would have to be made and it does take some time to get the disks pressed and sent to the stores.

On Strike and supporting Fallout 4 Mod Makers
Some fallout 4 mod makers have had their mods stolen and uploaded and downloaded on Bethesda's site for the Xbox One.
Not to mention its unrealistic to think you can attract the entire population of the world.
I'm sorry but that's exactly what stands the differences between them and the old North Blizzard, who created D2.
They're not trying to make games that hads heavy unique flavour of its own anymore, or at least satisfying in that terms of thinking really.
Peoples' reaction to SC2 and now D3 is definitely something that's really there, it's not the amount of blood you're willing to spray, or the cartoon bones poking out, it's D2's twisted monastery music, and the actual logical creation behavior that should be leading up to it in comparison. No amount of bright colour blood flow can compare to that kind of direct thinking.
It doesn't has to be sick or twisted, but it shouldn't be playing it so safe in reach.
What difference? Neither Blizzard North or Blizzard Irvine could realistically think they could attract the entire world's attention.
My apology. I didn't end my conclusion correctly. Blizzard Irvine WANT the general population. Blizzard North may have lead to the same kind of idea if it had survived till this day. But they wasn't. And that's how it started.
Example for ingame content: D3, Decapitating scene, still walking in logical terrory, in frame of something that is expected.
D2, running on the field with armed witches trying to chase you down. Stabbing them by cursor, killed, float abit, drop. That simple.
But in length it was one of the most exceptional monster killing in D2 I can remember.
I'm not too worried about it. For one thing Blizzard has really stepped up their advertising around release times since they merged with Activision. They put a bunch of dramatic ads on TV now like any other big release does. Plus anyone who isn't already following the development of Diablo 3 isn't necessarily going to have a harder time noticing the game if it is delayed by a few months.
Besides, Diablo 3 will cause a news shitstorm on most PC gaming websites when it finally comes out.
Blizzard isn't putting itself in a bad situation. It's doing what it must. Methinks it's just fan disappointment that is trumping so much useless, factless, and ridiculous speculation. We all know 2012. 2012. 2012.
Lets face it. Casual gamers who play few hours a week are not going to be remember every single game developer company, even if their the biggest one.
