All this talk about SoJs and the recent ladder reset made me reinstall D2.
I blame you guys !
I also tried it some time ago but it hurt my eyes so badly I didn't even reach the Den of Evil. Blizzard really should consider releasing a HD pack for Diablo 2. Widescreen support for 1920/1080 resolution at least. Hell, I'd even pay for that some money.
As for the OP: I'm also playing PoE now and I am having a lot of fun. I'm still leveling my first char so I can't really say anything about the end-game, but the whole currency/passive tree/skill gems system gives so many opportunities for character building that's it's almost breathtaking.
I'm no tech whiz, but I'm pretty sure making an HD version of a 10+ year old game with sprite graphics would be impossible. Someone with the knowledge feel free to call me out on that.

They still update it so I'm sure it's doable. They would have the go the route of AoE HD and re-do a bunch of assets.
There are resolution patches for D2, but they increase the field of view with the resolution and are not allowed for Bnet play. You can see monsters lingering around that would be screens away in the normal resolution.
I dont know anything more about hd-fying d2 though.

Not impossible... but potentially time-consuming. I imagine they still have the original 24-bit versions of the 2d assets, and the original models and scripts for the 3d stuff. The cost/benefit would be pretty crappy though. It'd probably cost them, like, 2 day's worth of WoW subs.

Dis. The sad thing, this might be an actual fact.
But seriously, why not, dumb a little money into a diablo 2 reskin? It would help clean up some of the biggest flaws in Diablo 3 and its community right now.
a)No longer could people complain about the game not resembling D2 enough.
b)It would give people a taste of what the Diablo franchise used to be about.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy D3 for what it is. But for some reason I can't shake the feeling that this game is missing something.
In POE its about the build, You pre-plan a build and while playing through the games difficulties you watch as your concept become reality. This is the entire game, the entire leveling process supports this.
In D3 the focus is similar to a basic RPG, you pick a class and you have access to everything that class has. There is no pre-planning, there is no investment other than leveling up.
