I can get in. I am working on an example of what I'd personally like the gates to look like. I am having a problem though... The wall is hallow (Three wide with the middle block empty, for soldier movement) and I can get the switch to open and close the door, but when I lay down the floor for the wall, it breaks the wire connection.
Anyway, probably should be talking about this in the main thread, not the city layout thread.
Regarding mining and "ownership" of precious materials... since everyone is going to have their own space to get creative, I imagine some people will need precious materials. What will be definitions of entitlement as far as those things go (diamonds, redstone, gold, etc) from the community mine?
Well I know I'll be dumping all the redstone I find in a community chest since I don't use it, but do you think we'll have a problem with this? If we have a community mine, isn't just that you can keep whatever you mine their yourself, but if you don't need it, you make it available to the rest of the community? After all you did mine it yourself.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.

I can't see it being any other way, how would people wrestle the minerals off you if you refused to give up what you mined, outside of just killing your face?

Ok see I thought there was going to be designated miners, but if it's every person for themselves then that works. How many mines are we shooting for? I think 4 will be a good number.
See, I think a level of trust is required for a town like this to work. If we don't trust each other, then of course we are all going to horde all our minerals to ourselves, and the town is going to collapse. Builders won't have time to both mine and then turn around and build the city, miners won't have time to mine then turn around and build their own defensive structures, redstone scientists won't have time to mine and then turn around and study the redstone. Etc. Not with Skeletons, Zombies, Spiders, Creepers, etc knocking at our doors. If there isn't a certain level of trust, we are all screwed, and not the good kind either.
Also, I wanted to call it Vinland after the actual Vinland. First town in a New Land, I think it's just fitting.

Ideally I think we should have one big mine at the bottom for diamond and lava/obsidian, basically what I've thrown up, and this mine would pretty much span the entire bottom under the city eventually, with new shafts possible to add as transportation gets too cumbersome. So simialr shafts could be added at any point to the same grid.
And then of course there can be all sorts of strip mines everywhere else if necessary.

I agree. I think a smaller 10x10 will be suitable for their needs. Larger construction ideas can be talked about and created later.
I just have to say, no. We're not a city of a few thousands. Is the plan to make a super small city of almost nobody? 20x20 is enough, but 10x10 is way, way too small.
I'm beginning to think that a bit too much restraints and organization like that will ruin further creativity. I don't see why the city has to be so strictly organized.
Have you seen the current map. Its a mess. Plus 20x20 times about 15 players is huge. That is about 6000 squares. 10x10 cuts down the size to 1500 squares. plus with building up and down, there is a lot of room. Again, these houses are really just to store personal items.
I do not want to stifle creativity at all. That is why with my map, we can easily add any new projects we want to work on. I am still excited about building a coliseum with some monster spawners.

Actually the plan is to keep everybody from building ontop of each other. And a 20x20 house is far larger then anybody needs.
But if you want a 20x20 house, you are more then welcome to go out of the city walls and build your own 20x20 house. However, it will not be under the protection of Vinland.
In my not so humble opinion (Haha, I made a funny!) I think that people should be permitted to make their own houses. However, if it's something like this one thing made in the current server, a house made of steps and only steps, I also think that we should have the right to have the person take it down. That way everybody can make their own thing, and it still looks like a damned house.
Nothing is wrong with it, it just looks stupid as shit, with all due respect.
I personally don't want anything like that in our town.
Imagine folks, a tower made of nothing but steps. -.-;
Ouch. Trust me I would take things more seriously if there was actually a town. But just so you know, there is a very kind family that lives in that tower, and you're dissing them.

I don't know about this - I'd rather have my 10x10 plot and do whatever I want with it as long as I'm not stepping on to someone else's yard.
Definitely the best one IMO.
I hope you know though, I'm making a fucking skyscraper.
Hey! What's wrong with my tower? You don't like my tower?! People live in that tower! Just so you know...
