"...come on, that post was all over the place. Go look at it. Don't even read it, just look at the formatting. It's spilling crazy all over the floor it's so full of crazy.
Anyway, there are a few archetypes of classic fantasy characters. Expecting us to do something outside of those archetypes for the sake of trying to be original is unnecessary, and would probably lead to something that's just ridiculous and not fun, or difficult to design - let alone balance.
I'm more than happy with you expressing your opinion, and as I summed it up yes essentially your opinion was that you wanted more originality. That's fine, but I was just saying the way in which it was presented was practically inedible."
He then went on to further discuss the topic:
What do you think about the character classes so far? Do you think they really need to shoehorn something totally unique and unheard of into the game as a playable class just for the sake of it, or are you happy to have more sensible characters like the ones we've already seen as long as they're well-rounded?"Well, I'm not sure I can discuss much more without showing our hand. But! I think we'll have at least one class in the game that will appeal to everyone. And that's sort of the goal with the core game, hit those main archetypes that everyone can identify with. "Hey, a Wizard... I'm pretty sure I know what that's all about without even seeing it." Any potential expansions are probably where you'd try out something not of a core archetype like, say, an assassin or druid. ;P
The witch doctor is a bit riskier, and I think sometimes written off as just a twist on the necromancer, but no one has really seen most of his abilities and the flavor he brings. He still has a lot left for people to discover."
Having played the Witch Doctor so far, I can say without a doubt that he's my favorite of the announced classes. If throwing frogs at your enemies isn't original, I don't know what is. I'm really curious to see if I end up playing as the WD or one of the unannounced classes when it's all said 'n done.
Not really. Zombie Wall is the perfect example of Blizzard trying so hard to come up with something cool and original, the outcome is something generic and boring. Zombie Wall? Why? That's sure to be fun the first 20 times..then becomes a drag. Bone Wall was just..a bone wall..strategic skill..They're just trying to come off as really nifty with the Zombie Wall thing, and I don't really blame theme..if I were a 10 year old, and saw that, I'd nag my parents to get that game every single day. That's ultimately what they want..more fans, thus more money. It's all about money, not all that "satisfying our loyal, hardcore Diablo fans!" bullshit. It's corporate strategy..wake up already.
I'm alright with he Witch Doctor..I'd actually pick him first from the characters I've seen so far.
I say bravo to blizzard for making the ordinary extraordinary!
it is not impossible to make a new class. It may be difficult and not worth the time or the effort but its not impossible. You just have to make up a new story about a new type of hero.
My post is comprehensive to the subject, so please bare with me. First of all, I still firmly believe that the Barbarian's inclusion in D3 is because the character, played or not, will be canonical to the D3 Storyline. No matter which way you squint at it, it makes sense that the Barbarian has been included because of two reasons, a) The character-build was half done job last time around and; he has ties to the new storyline of D3.
It has been confirmed that he is the same guy from D2.... <- there u go.
Then the WD.
C'mon people, six months after D3 launches you guys are gonna be sayin "Why did I complain so much? This is awesome!" and then ur gonna realise "This game is WAY different to D2, no wonder they did this and that".
In a good way, I mean. You can't complain about a Steak you've only seen and not tasted, let alone eaten.
Then the WIZ.
When i saw Wiz i was like "Wow! I so didn't expect that!" And I think thats what Blizz is aiming for here, different - yet the Same.
Yes the Wiz is a bit of a copy/paste of the Sorc, but I'm pretty sure the connection will be established in-game.
I've had time to sit back and think of D3 every time I close my eyes so, I've come up with this conclusion:
Once you've started to delve into the Game, when its finally released, you're gonna realise that Blizz is doing what they're doing for a very good reason!
The only question I still have is: How will Blizzard Recreate/Reinvent the magic feeling D2 has?
Bashiok hinted that there is one class left which every one will like, a classic. It's got to be a sword and shield knight class.
I have played Diablo 1 and Diablo 2 with mellee focused classes exclusively! But thanks to blizzard its gonnna change!!!
Whoever was ranting about blizzard going wrong and all that sh*t was doped out!!!!
Lets leave that poor guy alone!!
D3 is gonna be gr8!!!
YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Sorceress used Lightning/Cold/Fire exclusively.
The Wizard uses Lightning, Cold, Wind, Acid, Time, Melee Enhancements, Conjuring Spells, Misc. Arcane Magic based attacks and evasive moves, and even Fire based moves.
Yeah, definetly copy/paste.
I think that's what diablo is missing. Judging by Bashiok's response, Blizz thinks they have to have one class per archtype. Necro, Pal, and Druid were really the only D2 classes that went outisde that relm. D3 can have unique classes, but Blizz just needs to put a bit more thought into how they make classes.
I've never played Mythos, but honestly that doesn't sound like there is that much there. I mean if I even look at D2 and all of the builds out there for all of the classes even in classic; there's a hell of a lot more than 9 it sounds like all mythos did was take each class and make a possibility to do magic, ranged, melee or summoner; which you could technically do with most of the classes in D2 if you looked for or tried some creative builds.
Anyways, back on topic, what I'm thinking is that they want to go for uniqueness in the skills. I mean sure, the classes might be basic molds of other classes; but look at the skills people. In my opinion those are what define the class and it seems to me like they are giving us more viable options besides "dump 20pts in this skill". I feel that even if others feel the characters might be a tad generic; it's the skills that will make these classes shine and probably have us using them in ways we can't even forsee yet.
Would anyone who played the demo like to chime in here? Maybe give us their perspective having actually played the game and in a sense gotten a taste for the classes?
I think it is far too soon to say anything about classes being dysfunctional in differing roles. First off, they've already said on multiple occasions that the Wizard will function as a magic/melee combo as well as the standard glass cannon. That's without going in to great detail with the skill runes, which completely change how a character is played. Period. That is clearly visible from the videos. The Witch Doctor, like his protege, will function as both a caster and summoner, like the Necromancer (which many people have pointed out).
Secondly, we only have three characters announced so far. We don't even have more than one act confirmed, let alone one act confirmed completed. It's far too early to jump the gun and start with all this nonsense. This is not at the above quoted person- this is mainly at nearly everyone complaining about a ton of things. We have hardly anything to go by right now. Complaints are being made on ethereal fan-fabricated fantasies. We don't have enough information in this regard to make any good judgments besides the fact that we simply don't have enough information.
Thirdly, Diablo has been about simplicity. That simplicity is what made the "fast-paced" action that I'm sick of hearing about possible. Diablo is a watered-down RPG with an action-driven battle system. Overcomplicating characters is not necessary, nor is it feasible. If they want to change that from previous games and make characters more diverse, let them. There's no bonus of doing so, however. Through each of the classes in Diablo II each archetype was fulfilled. I expect the same in the next, if not more.
This "person" is just talking crazy. This is Diablo 3 and there's no room for errors. Absurd character design experiments are not allowed at this point. As already mentioned, maybe in the expansionSSS.
