Visually alerting you of items that drop anywhere onscreen, is a very welcome feature.
-- source: Battle.netThe way it works now is that when an item drops the name shows for about 5 seconds and then they fade out and disappear. Pressing Alt shows all dropped item names for again about 5 seconds and then the names fade out and disappear.
I actually didn't like it at first, I liked the on/off state of pressing or not pressing Alt, but with the names showing immediately after drop and having a sort of "grace period" after just tapping Alt, it's really grown on me and is a lot more intuitive. It's a lot easier to see what just dropped quickly and decide if you care, and it isn't necessary to constantly hold down Alt while scavenging after a large fight.
I still want to see -nopickup return but I haven't really asked anyone what the possibility of that is. I don't think it would work well with the current system, so options may have to be a possibility.
Thanks, Lyquid
if it is the second then it is a much welcome addition, other wise this is going to be frustrating.
Some spelling mistakes... but who am i to say.. my grammer is shiet! lol.. but anyways i guess its a decent feature..
When they first drop, the names are visible for the first 5 seconds they're on the floor. When you want to see the name again, you can press alt, holding it will extend the time, but tapping it will cause the names to show for 5 seconds and then fade out until you press alt again.
When an item drops, its name lasts for 5 seconds before fading away.
When pressing Alt (NOT holding), the 5 seconds + fade away feature will 'replay' on ALL items in the screen.
Need more time than 5 seconds? Press Alt again... it's still better than keeping your thumb on Alt 100% of the time.
I'm sick of people with reactions like:

"I don't understand anything so I twist and deform the news instead of reading carefully and trying to understand, then say it's gonna be worse than ever because it's not exactly the same as Diablo 2. Booo!!"
EDIT: What Septar said about the 'Holding Alt' feature doesn't show in the news (although it is logic that the feature exist), but since it wasn't confirmed, we can argue about it all day. Everything else he said was true and confirmed by the news.
Bah... I dunno. The people in Blizzard are currently playing and testing it (we - do not) :/ so if they say it's more comfortable, I believe them.
Extends as in, it doesn't fade out until 5 seconds after you let go of the button.
once the 5 seconds is up and the engine still see's the ALT key as pressed, what do you think its going to do? start the cycle again, over and over again appearing static until the ALT is depressed.
and the guys saying "oh so it will only show once and THATS IT!?!?!??" - omg.. read please kthx.

I think this is a great idea. What do you think?
The only thing I'd worry about would be the the names getting in way of your cursor, I mean if they're going to be click-able, the name of the thing with it's black bar will take up some space on the screen, and if there's more things, I don't want my char to start picking up things when I want him to attack something.
But it's just a big "what if?"
This is a good idea, I hated having to press alt all the time, sometimes during intense battles I would go to press alt and accidentally hit the windows key:O.... dead:mad:
Heheh, that happened to me once (I play hardcore). Only once, then I promptly obtained a screwdriver and removed the Windows keys from my keyboard.
I now remap my keys, so the Show Item function in on the spacebar... less finger strain. I think this is probably good cause 5 seconds is a long time in a battle... pretty much enough time to grab whatever you want to pick up if its within range. If items are not in range, tap Alt again when the battle is over.
Thst you press Alt or not, Items that drops will have their names shown for 5 seconds then fade. After, if you still want to press Alt you can, but they have built a system that could give the chance for players to see items that drops without hold Alt all the time.
for ex: If you won't grab anything that is not Rare or Unique, then it's pretty useless to hold Alt down since every time an item drops, you see its name (in color). So until you see something in yellow or in gold, you don't have to pay much attention to the loots and the Alt keys.
If this is it, I think it is great, but I am wondering how it's gonna work if you just AOE the room with a sorc (ex) then all monsters die in same time, droping ALOT of items, then your screen is full of names. I remember avec some problem fighting monsters with Alt key down in D2. So much items on the floor you couldn't even select a monster... Just hope this wont be a problem
