This might be what the developers want, but there simply isn't enough variety in what to put in armor sockets.
I think that's hitting the nail on the head right there. If there were more variety, then it wouldn't matter, because the plethora of other VIABLE choices would make determining a clear winner difficult.
Imagine if there were a BUNCH more weapon mods that just absolutely rocked - then crit damage would be JUST ONE OF MANY popular affixes. The problem isn't that crit damage is too powerful, the problem is that nothing else is powerful enough. Or unique/interesting enough.
Absolutely, how can we work as a commuity to fix this? Would diablo fans be interested in sparking up this conversation on the actual D3 forums, maybe we could get this worked into the new patch.
I think we should throw out some suggestions:
I for one would like to have a gem be able to utilize some of the effects already in the game: e.g. Stun chance on hit, or chance to bleed. These would increase with gem quality, and could be a lot of fun to play around with.
Ignoring the complete imbalance of socketed weapons/helmets, you have another issue. Other items with sockets (Shields, Rings, Chest, Pants) only get filled by 2 different gem types. The ones that boost your characters primary stat, and amythests for vitality. You never see a barbarian with an Emerald or Topaz in their socketed armor, or a DH with a ruby in anything other than their helm for paragon levelling.
This might be what the developers want, but there simply isn't enough variety in what to put in armor sockets.
Agree with all of this too. Some good points in this thread.
The problem as it exists now is that a socket is so incredibly valuable that it actually devalues everything else when it isn't present on an item. That is to say it's damn near a required affix
Exactly my issue. It gets to the point where you have what is potentially a very viable item...whose value plummets without that extra boost provided by the socket. Critical damage increase for us Crit stackers is a perfect example. You need that extra Emerald to really push the envelope.
First of all, none of you have any information about the beta ending. There is no information in that field yet. But If you compare the other Blizzard games...
Yes thank you so much.
Bashiok, who is I believe who I was quoting, had given the estimate of 2-3 weeks based on other Bliz games/betas.
The estimate is exactly that, an estimate. No one knows when the beta will end, obviously, or the OP probably wouldn't have asked the question.
I could have sworn that this was mentioned somewhere. Someone, possibly Bashiok? commented on the fact that Beta would end, and release would occur 2-3 weeks after that.
So the end of beta is a gooooood thing.
An even better thing would be a release date. Let's do this thing, am I right? Can I get an Amen?!?
This would be a tremendously fun character to play as, since you are dealing huge damage while being relatively difficult to even approach (the runed firebats, pets and runed big bad voodoo make sure of that!). \
To be fair, this website is very good with preventing needless spoilers. People always warn about them, and the main page has huge spoiler warnings and greyed out pictures in case you do not want to see. So it's not like anyone is being forced to deal with it.
I would personally choose #1, because I feel that regardless of how hard they promise Inferno will be, I get the feeling that eventually we will be geared up so extremely well that we won't need to be as careful with our defense and will instead want to exchange it for more offense so that we can clear things faster.
I would have said the opposite, and here is why:
- Your offensive capabilities like DPS etc. will always be fairly high, even in inferno, if all the skills are based on weapon damage. A level X sword that you find within the first 5-10 mins of inferno will probably be comparable or maybe even superior to what you currently have equipped. That new sword = the damage level they want you to be at.
- Your defensive capabilities, although equally matched to items, will most likely be no match to any enemy on inferno since they are all the same level if not higher than you.
- So your best bet (since they will have massive hit points and can take a beating) is for you to increase your defense as much as possible to offset the absolute destruction they will be dishing out.
In fact, it was even said by the Bliz employees in the official Inferno vid that we will want to increase our defensive stats and resistances as much as possible.

Today is going to be a great day.
Thank you Bliz, for coming through with a solid date! Gj.

Just a "June" would probably placate the community (at least somewhat).

I can't believe some of the WD passives. So strong (which is why I think he can sometimes be underrated).
Your passives stack to:
Pets: +20 damage dealt, -20 damage taken (plus the life gain from the Zdogs!)
WD: +20 damage dealt, -20 damage taken (plus the hex heal!)
Yes he would be one toughhhh WD. Nice work!

Although the first time you change your skills should be a freebie.
Oh and every time you see a unique, random event you should take a shot.
Would be fun as hell.

He is heavily Fire and Life focused. He and his pets will carve into the heart of the PvE or PvP realm, and will come out relatively unscathed.

You should be proud of that.
