If you want, do you have any direct communication you want to use.

Forum format is not going to be the best to keep discussions up-to-date.
If you are serious about doing this, I am in to help and get this project going .

I just setup a discord channel. For anyone who does not know about discord, its a free browser based chat system. It has live chat like IRC and you can also voice chat if you would like. I think this will be the best since this is super easy to use and anyone can instantly just go to the link and chat.

I don't have a name for this. Or any good ideas for one. I know the logo or name don't match at all and I was just using warfront and the explosion logo as an identity for the community who will take part in the development and testing for this project.

What do you guys think? Should we come up with a solid name and logo?

    If so....

Lets do a challenge, any graphic artists make a logo you feel fit for this project, and good name thinkers post some good names :) Which ever gets the most popularity well take a vote and we can move forward from there.

I think you're trying a split that won't work out in the end. You should ask yourself if you want to make an ARPG or a dungeon crawler because it's not the same thing.

The gameplay has to be atmospheric. That means less enemies but more threatening ones. A small light radius only works if the dungeon isn't filled with monsters. They have to be scarce. They have to surprise you.

Because if you keep your powerful items and get better and better ones, eventually the game will lose its atmosphere. Eventually it will be all about the items and efficiency to get them in an ARPG.

Shapookya thanks for the feedback and ideas. You made me look at this in a hole new way. TBH I never really put much thought into what a rogue like, dungeon crawler or ARPG actually is. I just kind of had this vision in my mind of them all melded together.
I for one would like to spend lots of time on each monster and really have them do unique things instead of the usual chase and hit you or cast a spell at you. In doing so a less densely filled level will bring more attention to the gameplay and mechanics of each mob and how to attack and counter them. While keeping the element of surprise most of the time. Maybe by the end of this week I will do a "dev blog" and do a showcasing of what I mean.
Now you bring up a good point with the game turning into just an item hunt, now everyone is just playing to max efficiency to get the endgame gear. I plan to have items, upgrades and customization for sure but I have no clear plan yet on how we can keep the atmosphere while not allowing this to be only a lets just grind for items. While this is the core of the game after all "kill monsters get better gear" if we can keep the player on the edge and force you and a friend or friends to proceed through levels with caution instead of running as fast as you can while spamming I think this would be a good first step.

Wouldn't having such an editor as a tool make it much easier to create the content for the game?

I'm no expert, but with the editor working, all you'd need is art and sound assets to work with and then you could have some people (i.e. level designers) work on building the world, even if they didn't have much programming knowledge :)

Yes your are correct but Unreal Editors are already made simple and easy to go from programming the back end, to level design and then doing 3D modeling etc. You do have me thinking tho, maybe the editors can be implemented in a way for example allowing players or a level designer to design and create outside of the engine itself. I have not done any research on this as of yet so I could be totally wrong.
Now in the last engine I did in pure C++ I created tools exactly like you said to allow anyone without experience to design and start creating things. Not only did this allow a complete novice to mess around it also sped up the development process.

Now this was a 2D platform so most of it was fairly simple and easy to create those tools.

Good luck. I love ARPGs so please keep us updated here. If you don't mind getting advice: Release demos and playtests early and often. You will learn so much from the feedback you get and a constant flow of feedback and player interaction will keep you motivated.

Astrayon very good points, I don't know how to explain this but the 800 hours to gear out, and then bumping it up to 1200 hours to gear out just to add longevity to the game. This is something I'm purely against. Now I'm not saying I would like to hand out gear like candy but I also don't wanto turn grinding into a chore or make it feel as tho it's work. I'm going to use d3 paragon levels as an example. Please no one take this as aggressive just an opinion of mine. At the time paragon levels came out it really felt like blizzard pushed that out as a lazy way of adding end game and some longevity. While I'm not against paragon levels I think they are awesome for end game, but at the time and the situation it just felt lazy I would like to avoid scenarios like this if possible we are all not perfect. Paragons combined with rifts etc now its clear and blends with each other.

Now inside the indiedb link I have a demo anyone can download and try out. This goes for anyone who has tried it, please give some feedback. Are the controls working smoothly? Is your framerate good? Has anyone encountered any bugs etc. I plan on release new versions frequently and also sometime soon I will host and we can get a bunch of people in the game to do some stress tests.

The demo itself is small but like I said its mainly to test the core functions over a network and on different systems. I will add more playable content in the next demos.

I think one thing that would really fit amazingly well with such a community driven project is... providing an easy to understand game-editor that would allow the players to create their own adventures and stories within the world.

Actually, it could potentially be a very fun and unique end-game concept.

I really do like this idea, I forget which game had something like this but it had user made quests and adventures and surprisingly the rules behind it allowed the user to create some pretty custom content while staying balanced with the current game.

Making an editor I think would be awesome but this is a huge project in it self. This is something to keep in mind though!

Looks pretty awesome so far. It would be cool to add elements from all the Diablo games. Being a huge Diablo fan would love to see fire wall as a spell again. I think you should hopefully find some talent and start a Kickstarter page to get the funding needed. There are many ways today to get support. Wish I could help more, but my job is a voice engineer. Not on the gaming side of things. Although could always try to help with monster creation or storyline ideas. Just let me know.

Thanks for checking it out, one thing I thought about was a kickstarter, but to be honest I have a full time job so to do this full time I would have to quit and essentially survive off funding and to me that feels wrong. I would love to become a full time game developer but I really am happy at my current job and don't plan on leaving anytime soon. If a kickstarter is ever started for this project I would like to see 100% go towards the development and infrastructure of the project.
With that being said I will be dedicating most of all my freetime towards developing this project and progressing. I do appreciate the offer of your help and will most likely take you and others up on the offers by shooting ideas, concept art and other things of that nature :)
One last thing, I would love to bring in some classic skills like firewall etc. Me personally being a huge fan of the Necro you guys can be sure well have no shortage of minions and summons!

    Good job.
Only thing is, don't go cloning anything. Make sure it's special in your own kind of way. And if you do decide to clone the diablo franchize, dont write it down - it doesnt sound good.

I don't plan on exactly cloning it and well be adding our own twist upon the environment and game mechanics. I'm just using the phrase "Diablo Clone" at this early stage to set the atmosphere and the future vision of the project. Everything will be 100% custom designed and created, yes we will be extracting great ideas from other successful arpg's but we will be bringing our own new and original ideas also.

Hey all, I always wanted to make a game. For a lot of gamers Diablo 3 fell a bit short or just was not the atmosphere others were looking for etc.

All in all Diablo 3 is a very fun and polished game not here to knock it at all. After spending time on many different forums and lurking through threads about what people wanted or didn't want or how they think it should be I seen lots of replies to those people on the lines of something like: "Well if you don't like it make your own game".

I say let's do it! Not to piss in Blizzards cheerios or any thing like that but because we can. What better place to gather a community then here the number one ARPG/Hack N Slash on the net.

Before I talk your ear off here is a link to the youtube playlist so you guys can get a gist of what the basic concept looks like so far.

    IndieDB link: http://www.indiedb.com/games/warfront-arpg

    Official Website: http://www.warfrontrpg.com

I would like to make this a free to play game with the option of buying weapon effects and armor skins etc kinda like PoE. But I would also like people to be able to find these same effects and skins within the game for free. Other than that I'm the only developer. So that is why I came.

Anyone interested in game development is free to help and jump aboard. For the rest please post comments, feedback, ideas, criticism etc.

My main goal here is to create the ARPG all of us always wanted. We will use diablos core features and expand upon them. Instead of a game built by developers lets build a game based off the players! So if your game post up tell me how you guys feel, ideas etc thanks!
