Aug 24, 2008carlcarlson posted a message on 2008 Leipzig: Gamona Interview with Jay WilsonThe possibility of a playable demo at Blizzcon is pretty awesome. To me, that seems to suggest that the game is nearing completion (using the word "nearing" very loosely).Posted in: News

Really? So if I join a game with a lvl 90 and he gives me a lvl 75 axe (which happens often in D2) I can just use it, no questions asked?

I agree, it would only be for the hardcore, but the above post is right, that is a LOT of the Diablo fanbase. And this is a good thing, too, because the print numbers would have to be fairly limited or else I doubt the companies could keep up.
And to the guy who suggested doing it yourself, I don't see that happening. Yes you can get anything printed if you have the model, but you can't get it posed or painted. It's also going to cost you a lot more than $69.

When I started getting decent gear in D2 I realized that I really wanted to somehow have a physical representation of my character. Unfortunately at that time a custom-made figure was out of the question, the technology just wasn't affordable yet. I could buy a base figure but there was no way to get the custom gear for it.
Then about a year ago I started hearing about custom WoW figures being printed. Sweet! That's what I always wanted! Unfortunately they cost (I think) $250. Ok, so great idea, but I can't afford it.
Then today I read this. Custom figures made for $69. Bingo. If I can hold my barbarian in my hand decked out in all the gear I've found I will GLADLY pay $69.
I think this should be a reward though. Like if you beat the game on all three (4?) difficulties you are offered the opportunity to have your character made. You still pay for it, but this would prevent the demand from outstripping the supply (I'm sure it takes a lot of time to make these things). Maybe the base of the figure is stamped with the name, level, and date as well. If something like this was made a reality that would double my excitement for this game (which is already at the bursting point).

Ah yeah, that reminds me of another idea I had concerning PvP. There should be some type of loot reward for winning. That way you could be strictly PvP and still stay viable by getting new loot. I don't know how they would determine the drops, but the opposing player level should have something to do with it. I don't know, I'll leave all the details up to the Blizzard whiz-kids.

I know some people will say "if you want capture the flag go play a FPS". On the one hand I agree, but on the other hand I think that is close-minded. The main draw of Diablo is pumping up your character with new loot, but for what? To fight the same monsters over and over? It would be great to be able to take your beefed up character into a player match and destroy the other team. It would also open you up to new strategies that you wouldn't have though of otherwise.

yeah if I'm playing single player I do the same, but when it's multiplayer that's not an option. The way I was playing was in a local multiplayer game. That way it's still solo, but the monsters will respawn every game.

Oh, and as for Hellfire, it's fun, but it doesn't really fit the Diablo universe in my opinion. It's worth checking out though if only to extend your time with Diablo 1.

This is the argument that I have a problem with. The argument that if you like the art direction you MUST be a WoW fanboy, and sleep with your cdkey every night. I mean tell me that that is some critical thinking right there. Better yet are the people saying Blizzard is making World of Warcraft 2, not Diablo 3. Those are the people who's minds I really admire. Lots and lots of thought going into those posts, boy.
I myself agree with both sides. I can definitely see the WoW influence in the close-up of the barbarian. Lo-res textures and oversized armor just doesn't fit in Diablo in my opinion. The pastels of the outdoor area also seem odd. Having said that, the brightness doesn't bother me either. If you think back to Diablo 2 there were quite a few bright colored areas (though not pastels). Almost all of the outdoor areas in Act 3 were bright, and Act 1 had it's bright areas as well. However, once you went down into a dungeon or cave it got darker and murky. They contrasted the two to really bring out the juxtaposition of the dark areas. And really the enemies are what brought the fear-factor for me, not the environments. Knowing I could get my butt kicked around the next corner kept me much more on edge than some dark pixels on the ground texture.
In the end I would sign the petition just because I'm not 100% behind the current direction. I would buy and enjoy the game either way, but I wouldn't mind seeing a change. My main fear is that the petition has been tainted by all of the people spouting "color is so GAAAAY" and "I don't want WoW 2". This is not constructive criticism, and does not show any thought or reasoning. Those are the people who I would WANT to annoy if I were making a game, just to spite them.

No, but I think he is correct in assuming most players will go through the game multiple times. Really if you play through once and then put it back on the shelf you are missing the point of Diablo.
