And I'm also worried about the health bars above each enemy. I prefer when those bars are displayed on the top or the corner of the screen, so you know where to look. They do it for bosses, why not for every single enemy?

I'm not in favor of the numbers, and I don't want to see health bars above each enemy. To me, they detract from the game. At the top was much better as you could more easily ignore it... and better plan if you needed to take a potion or tough it out. I also don't like the "block" messages shown in the skeleton battle.

Hopefully you can turn them off.

I do wonder, however, if programming them in would allow for blizzard to create a version for the visually impaired (Section 508 compliant)

posted a message on Diablo III - More Details
I can only imagine the spreadsheets blizzard must have as they try to balance exciting innovations with character class limitations accross single and multi-player scenarios. Actually, I think they must have relational databases going.... or the spend way to much time having to rehash every event from every angle.

Disproportionate life points means that someone will likely need that globe before others. Paly's with healing auras do nothing for single players who want to play something else... and you wouldn't want to limit a spell caster to always having to have an a hirling with a healing aura. And so forth and so on... so I don't see how they can completely get away from potions unless every character also has a healing skill they can use... or if globes work like loot, everyone has a chance of getting one and they are the only ones who can see it.

Personallly, I was OK with the potions. I hadn't considered that the globes are similar to pac man and such until some other poster pointed it out.

I think that just dropping loot that you don't want has a couple of problems too... wouldn't that then make it a free for all for that item with no guarantee that anyone needs to give you anything for it? I think you should have to keep all of your items or leave them - without anyone else being able to see them. Restrict trading to in town in a trading screen.

How will the monsters in single play differ from Battlenet?

Will the same items on Battlenet be available in single play? (I'm not a fan of the two differing in terms items and rune words)

With the expanded storage/bag system, will be still have a chest in town?

Will we be able to gamble for all types of items or will it be the same as D2 where we could say gamble a katar, but not a long staff?

posted a message on Quests we want to see in D3
I'm sure most of you noticed the announcement that there will be more quests and class specific quests. I'd like to hear what you have in mind.

For me, I think it would be really cool to have an under water quest (if of course the Havoc physics generator can pull that off) and a guild-related quest. I'd like to see a rune-related quest (searching for them not just killing the countess), a musical instrument related quest, and of course there must be something related to a shard of the Worldstone.

For single player, if not for BN, I think it would also be good to have a quest that changes future gameplay. For example, you choose between rescuing a NPC or killing them and getting some really good loot. If you save them you get an extra discount in town or an extra hireling (non-resurrectable perhaps). If you kill them, you get a rare or unique item.

    As far as quest rewards:
For something guild-related, I think you should get a set item specific to your class (after all wouldn't most of the set items be highly guarded by the guild).

For an underwater quest, I think you should get to collect something that can get sold for gold (coral, perals, etc.) and I think you should get +5 fire resistance and/or a magic item that cannot be found elsewhere in the game... stingray (leather) armor, a sharkstooth (serrated) blade, or a crown of pearls.

For a music related quest I think you should be able to bring the item to a bard and get increased stamina and perhaps a town discount... after all, the bard will make you famous. Of course, if we added the possiblity that the instrument gets broken before you return with it, you could suffer a negative quest outcome.

So, what would be your quest request?

I just did a more thoughtful appraisal of my time, sigh, and I have to double my estimate to 6-12 hours. And that doesn't count having to break out LOD and revisit the necromancer.

Confess!!! How much time have you already spent on Diablo 3?

Have you watched the gameplay video more than once? What about the cinematics? How many times have you posted on this blog? And on the Battlenet forum? Did you read each section of the official website? Have you googled news of the release?

It's been less than a week since the announcement and I think I've already spent 3-6 hours obessing over a game that isn't likely to be out until December 2009 (no, that's not offiical, that's my guestimate... I would so love to be pleasantly surprised that it will be this December or even next July).

When I think of "Witch Doctor" I think of Scooby Doo or Gilligan's Island. Basically a character in a comedy. Can we call him a voodoo priest or shamen?

OK. I changed my mind. The weapons were cool, as are the other things I mentioned, but what I thought was most unique was the Siegebreaker Assault Beast biting the head off of the character in the last scene... it was the female witchdoctor that got decapitated right? Unique deaths of player characters, at least when fighting the bosses, would be sweet.

Um, can you tell I usually don't play hardcore characters...

Uggh, I can't believe that some people think the WD is the best thing they saw... well, I guess it takes all kinds.

For me definately NOT the WD, but perhaps Decard Cain!?!

just kidding. DC is OK, but I never stop to listen.

The best was the effects on the weapons... the glowing frost, shooting electric, and halo of flame... bummer that these are so rare on sorceress weapons. I'm eager to find out what a rune word will do.

I liked the armor on the Barb, but am slightly worried that we'll have very little control over the look of our characters. Will every Sorceress be a slut? Note that there is a graphic art pic of what appears to be the Sorceress... straight out of a comic book with boob job breasts and all. Not that I mind, but I do think it is a little unfair if the Barb and WD are as sexy as the male characters get. I don't think I want Baldur's level of control of look, but I kind of liked the idea that each character could wear the same armor (strength providing) in D2. If we can't do that in D3, what will the graphics artists give us?

I digress. The 3-D was cool, as were the cultists and the zombie wall. It was a little weird though seeing dead bodies slowly fade out to nothingness. And I hope that we can either turn the monster life bars off or they put them at the top of the screen. I found them to be rather distracting.

I still would rather have a pure defense class. Only makes sense. Barb specializes in combat why not have a Class that specializes in Defense?

Because that charcter would not make a good character in single player. I think the developers what people to play all of their characters in every incarnation of the game. Relying on hirelings to do all the dirty work is near impossible esp since they get negative bonuses versus bosses.

OK. Just a note to say again, please ditch the feathers on the witch doctor.

Since we can choose gender, let us choose skin color as well (not race as I don't want to get into an argument with someone who just has to be an elf).

I want to see the 3 remaining classes:

    archer/druid
    paladin/assassin
    sorcerer

The tech tree - whatever it winds up looking like - would determine how much someone was paladin versus assassin, etc.

BTW - I don't think D3 will have a crusader... not a friendly name for the Islamic world and it appears that D3 has noticed it as the author of the stories is al-Hazir, a rather arab sounding name.

An alternative would of course be:

    archer/assassin
    sorcerer/druid
    paladin

    or

sorcerer fighter (like in Act 2 of LOD)
    archer/druid
    paladin/assassin

I would love it if D3 gave us a menu to choose the name (wizard/warlock/sorcerer/mage, etc.) that we call our character. Yes, different people would choose different names within the spell caster class and we wouldn't quite know if what the character was about (i.e. 2 mages could specialize in something completely different) but that's what already exists, right? We would just have more capacity to individualize our characters.

    One additional thought...

Please stop the constant animation on Diablo 3 character classes pages. The barbarian looks like he is hyperventilating and the witch doctor looks like either either has Parkinson's disease or is really coked up and can't stand still.

Come on guys, we all know what the three remaining classes are.

    4.Rouge
And heres why: This one is completely obvious, DUH. There will be an Amazon type character, Rouge fits male and female, it can encompass all aspects of fighting. This is a no brainer.

    5. Seraph (Paladin Class)

I agree with those that don't like the WitchDoctor... especially if he/she is forever stuck wearing feathers.

The Rogue/Amazon seems unnecessary if you have a Barbarian and Paladin. I would much rather have an Assassin.

I'm OK with a Paladin class, but don't really want angels, nor do I particularly like the name Seraph. Speaking of names....

I don't like the name WitchDoctor either. What I'd like D3 to allow is for us to choose the name of our class and for that to show up in BNet or single player. I'd like to see a range of possible titles - probably depending on gender, but maybe that's a bit too parochial, out of millions of gamers out there there has to be at lease one or two TG folks who would prefer to choose a male title with female character or vice versa. So, Blizzard programmers, please don't assign names to the classes, let us choose what we want our character to be called.

For example, we could choose: magus, wizard, warlock, sorcerer, mage, magician, conjurer, wise man, wise woman, sorceress, witch, spell binder, spell caster, etc.

Then we could have a barbarian, viking, marauder, figher, amazon, harpy, mongol, etc.

And a thief, assassin, ninja, shadow, trapmaster, trickster, silent knife, etc.

And a paladin, guardian, crusader, defender, protector, vengance, etc.

And because we're stuck with the witchdoctor (when I would much rather have the necormancer or druid both of whom I think will get dropped in favor of the WD), we could have a wise man, wise woman (yes overlap possible wth magus character unless the developers think that's a bad idea), shaman, medicine man, herbalist, hedge wizard, vodoo priest, vodoo priestess, cultist, summoner, etc.

posted a message on Φ Diablo III Art Design Direction Survey
The graphics look great to me (esp the biting off of the head in the last scene... how cool would that be to have unique deaths depending on who your character was fighting). However, to be honest, I'm a bit disappointed by the Witch Doctor character. As they have said that they are only going to have 5 classes, I think the WD will take the place of the Necromancer and the Druid (summoning the dead and the mongrels) both of which I think are better characters. And, hopefully I'm wrong, but it seemed a bit well, racist, that the WD graphics were of dark skinned people in wild get ups. In New Orleans of old anyone could have been a secret voodoo practitioner, they didn't have to be all out there. If I had to only choose 5 classes, they would be (in alpha): assassin, barbarian, druid, paladin, sorcerer/ess. A sixth would be the necromancer.

I also didn't like the horizontal life bars popping up everywhere in the beginning demo... hopefully we can turn them off. I liken them to web 2.0 pop-up crap that makes browsing a pain in the rear.

Note about LOD - I hated that special druid clubs were limited to clubs and not all mace class. I also hated that you could gamble for some character specific items, but not others (e.g., katars but not wands).
