The developers justification for using clean textures is so that the player can focus better. Even in theory this sounds stupid and wrong for diablo.
Somewhere else they say the exaggerated proportions of objects in the environment are supposed to convey epic ness but again, it just doesn’t look right for diablo.
Their entire stylized art direction for diablo simply fails in its current ingame form, but it obviously works in the warcraft universe so keep it over there!
They use the lord of the rings as an analogy to justify their direction with the colors and darkness/brightness levels, but the problems run deeper than that, so ppl stop using the “just adjust our monitor settings” argument!
I guess everyone thinks we want the WHOLE game to look drab and dull, this isn’t the case!
Do we expect ALL outdoor environments to be dark nighttime overcast rainy? No, this isnt what were suggesting.
We can understand using colors to highlight elements, and using subtle dark hues instead of removing the light altogether to give contrast. It looks fine for many games, this just isnt the way of things in diablo land!

Diablos look had a lot going for it so why change it so much? A little change-yes, but advancements should remain within the realm of the previous games.
Im not saying make d3 look EXACTLY like d2. A facelift needs to be made of course, but instead of moving forward, they veered off in the wrong direction. So having said this, is it likely they will/can change EVERYTHING to our liking? Of course not, but if they could at least head back towards the original path the diablo universe is based on, we would be happy.

I think a more accurate analogy of diablo3 in its current form is that its going to be like the star wars prequels.
Meaning, of course it will be a huge box office hit, but hardcore fans will be dissapointed!
So its up to blizzard to either bring the game back toward its roots; or make like George Lukas and tarnish the franchise by deviating too much from the original formula that was responsible for its success in the first place.

Sigh, so many people are taking the petition completely out of context, turning it into anti-blizzard hate propaganda, fueled by people who want d3 to be delayed for years or even indefinitely. This is not its original intent!

Truth is, were just a little TOO passionate about diablo.
We just want d3 to be perfect, and are fighting to IMPROVE it pertaining to the look and feel of the game deviating too much from the originals.
Of course this is objectable, which is why were merely making heat-felt SUGGESTIONS via a petition, and stating our OPINIONS on these forums.
We arent trying to make everyone think like us, or demanding that blizz heeds our demands or else heads will roll; we simply want them to KNOW of our opinions, and take them into consideration during the rest of the games development (if possible).

Obviously the petition was successful at gaining their attention, and I hope they diffuse this argument soon by releasing some info about the first graphical styles they looked into but abandoned for whatever reasons (or atleast some more “diabloy” looking screens), so that we can judge whether we agree with their new “controversial” design change.
We know the game is still under construction and all we have to criticize is a 20 minute demo, but that doesn’t mean it’s unreasonable or too early to voice our opinions when it concerns one of the most important core foundations of the game.
So until they specifically announce that the look is a done deal and set in stone, we are going to speak up about it!

I hate seeing us petitioners attacked daily just because were raising points of interest that are very important to us. We ALL love this game and we will ALL surley play it for the great gameplay we ALL expect, just stop screaming at those of us that want a little more.

    D3 looks nothing like WoW
u already said this, then i gave examples as to how they DO look alike. maybe instead of blatantly shitting on my opinion, you could back yours up. (remember you said NOTHING like WoW)

and all the Diablo clones out there look like each other, and sadly that's what you want to do with D3 too, good luck destroying the unique look of the game.
i dont even know what your basing this statment on, my whole argument is about making the game look unique and original within the realm the series is based on.

There is nothing unrealistic about the in-game Barbarian model, go study some anatomy.
i never said he was anatomically incorrect, when i spoke of proportions i was refering to various objects in the environment. somewhere a developer explains how this deliberate styilization is supposed to enhance the objects, and lend to an epic emotion or some crap.

    That's the Male

    That's the Female

For God's sake, show me when did i say other wise,

I was clearly and explictly talking about the ARMOR when i showed the Female barb.

look at my pic moron i wasnt comparing the female!
And the only thing that looks cartoony here is this

thats because it a fuckin RENDER! it doesnt represent the INGAME model which is what im comparing!
You all think this way cause D2 is a freaking 2D game and War3 is 3D, that's clearly the reason to all this mess, the only resemblance between D3 and WC3 is that they are BOTH 3D GAMES.

But D3 and WC3 are separate, not every stylized game is the same, the market is filled with stylized game and each one of them is unique, just like D3 is now with its pastel colors and detailed models and textures.
no shit its 3d, but no its not the reason for this mess!
even if d3 was turned into 2d sprites in its current form it would still look like a darkish 2d WoW! or at best, a warcraft mod for diablo!
there are numerous pics on these forums showcasing games that are 3d yet look nothing like WoW.
stylized does not have to be gay handpainted backgrounds and unrealistic proportions
theres a reason why so many people are refrencing WoW on this topic, im not alone on this, the game spurs up images of warcraft. whether ppl think thats a good thing or not shows their true attitude toward the franchise, that is that they either hate it and would like it to change, or they are OK with it and therefore just want a good hack n' slash and arent as passonate about the diablo franchise.
Sorry, but we are not the ones who made Diablo, Blizz are the only ones who have the right to say what diablo should be and what it shouldn't be.

They are the only ones how have the right to define what the new diablo will be exactly, no one else has that right, because none of you is on the Dev team nor worked on the development of any Diablo games of even had any hand at how diablo looks, it is all up to them and you have to respect that.

Games are not a democracy, games are a vision and choice of the game creator, you are not part of the Dev team and you don't own shares in the company to tell them what they need to do, fans think to higly of themsleves these days, if you like the game you buy it, if you don't then just don't buy it, it is an open market, simple as that, and it works with all other comapnies.

Many other companies are successful without listening to their fans as much as Blizz do, and i have to say with the reaction many people made that Blizzwas better off doing like other companies ( 99% ) and relsesing the game when it is done without showing us anything in the alpha stage of development.

Blizz is an exception and people are starting to take it for granted, this will soon backfire at us, they might stop listening and releasing any news about their games like eveybody else does.

You are the ones you ar backstabbing the company by not trying to understand their new vision and reasons for change, if there is anyone at fault here it is the whining fans.
well then its lucky i use the prefix IMO!!!
btw that means IN MY OPINION!!!
wow how sad it is arguing with such ignorance.

So you are trying to compare a tiny 2D sprite to a fully detailed 3D model ( even not the same character class ) !!?

That side of the comparison is not really valid.

As for the other side, what do you expect a barbarian to wear, paper thin armor, it has to be bulky and spiky.

And comparing it to WoW shows clearly that D3 is far superior in all terms, the textures are very nice, the colors are realistic and coherent, the textures are crisp.
actually they are the same character class
anyway u missed the point, im not saying d2 looks better than d3 from a graphical standpoint, it obviously looks nicer
im trying to illustrate the artistic direction overall isnt staying true to diablo, its obviously INFLUENCED more by warcraft than d2, which is WRONG! imo KEEP THE GAMES SEPARATE! as much as possible PLZ

you all taking me as an evil guy who wants diablo3 to fail, i just want it to live up to the diablo name.
i know the gameplay will be awesome and help make up for any peves i may have with its looks, but if its released unchanged it wont be a true diablo to me and many others.
it will be a diablo ripoff with great gameplay elements using the diablo name.
also i know u people like the new look, or maybe your just siding with blizz art team because u want the game yesterday, its ok nothing wrong with any of that, but dont chastise me because i would prefer a true continuation of the series instead of this "Contoversial Art" direction they have taken.
it really angers me that they would even go the controversial route, they had to have known it would upset people. the only real reason is that they are being greedy, babying it up to gain a bigger audience. i dont believe for a second that they truly feel their new art style is moving in the right direction from a gamers perspective.

Actually many see it very unique, it will look more like Titan Quest if they do actually change it to the way you want.

    Isn't that what you want

    Well, sadly that's Titan Quest

    And that's Dungeon Siege 2

Can't you see how both look generic and boring, the look almost identical, only with TQ having better graphics, but both have the same boring style.

D3 looks nothing like this now, and many people ( including myself ) don't want it to.
actually the titan quest pic looks more detailed than any d3 pic ive seen also has better lighting
besides im NOT saying it looks EXACTLY like it, i just think they went the wrong way with it.

i hope this comparison show what i mean

You can fix it. Turn off the monitor and everything will be dark . Seriously all these negativity wouldn't make the game much better.
if your refering to me complaining about the game not being dark enought then OMG for the 3rd time, its not an issue with me.

You can fix it. By adjusting monitor settings or ingame brightness/customization. Alot of techniques to make it more dark. And plus how can you judge a game by just watching some glimpses of the first act???? Imagine the last act, this game is going to be amazing. It will crush WoW.
did u even read my post i said i was ok with the brightness, my problems cant be adjusted using monitor settings

Undetailed, you have to be kidding me, did you even see how they look compared to WoW textures.
i know its more detailed than wow textures, they still dissapoint, it still isnt as detailed as d2 -dont make me post the gargoyle statue.

Dude, if you have read my post, they're actually trying to push for a new, unique game. Where there'll be dark settings and 'happy':D settings to make it more vast and diverse.
the game i see isnt unique at all, thats my point it looks like titan quest or some other diablo ripoff. i was just expecting somthing more true to the franchise yet still original in its own right.

“One of the things that we considered when we were working on the visuals for ‘Diablo III’ is the fact that color is your friend...," said Lee. You hear that folks? Not everything should be dark and grimy like a bathroom in a rest stop at night. Lee also added that the colors add contrast to the game as it highlights some areas of the environment. "A great analogy is like in the 'Lord of the Rings' - not everything is dark,' said Lee.

to clairify, im ok with the level of darkness, even the outdoor areas. and while the colors dont make sense, i can live with them. the problem i have runs deeper which is why im so dissapointed becuase i know its unlikely to be fixed.

Can you go to the previous page and find my post, it is supported by the blizzard dude that said it. You'll see that some of the game will indeed seem cartoony to ppl that whine that its not dark enough.

the level of darkness isnt even the biggest problem, what bothers me the most is the exagerated proportions that take away from the true diablo look and are trademarks for warcraft. this is apparently supposed to make things look epic or more fantastical or whatever, but it just makes things look fake and cartoony. i know this probably cant be fixed at this point but ppl can atleast admit that blizz is shamelessly pandering to the warcraft crowd.
plus the smooth undetailed textures just scream warcraft to me.
