I like the new UI, I liked the old one also, though it did feel a bit too high tech, so I like the new one.
As far as the abilities icons go, I think the colors are good, its the images themselfs that need changing.
They are fairly recognizable now, without playing it I can't tell for sure, but the biggest problem is the actual images, like the eye one, the heads that need to represent monsters are silly and stuff like that.
As far as the icons being metallic, I feel that won't work now, now with the 3D graphics, the D3 animations and spell effects it will really look bad.
I feel they just need to concentrate of making the icon images have more realistic eyes and heads and stuff like that.
Also if the icons are a bit bigger that would be awesome!

So Diablo 2 was bad than? If I recall correctly it was released in 2000 and its expansion in 2001.
Escapist Magazine has a "Developer's Showdown" going on. Polls are made in which two Developers are facing each other to get the most votes and the winner will move on to the next bracket.
At the moment Activision Blizzard is up against Relic Entertainment. The Relic fan base is tough and Relic itself has asked its players to vote for them on their front page. Blizzard fanbase needs to get a bit active and vote for its favorite developer (Blizzard)!

+their clues were all towards lord of the rings. ~~ ring of fire, hell breaks loose, etc...
hints for diablo would be: king of evil has comed back, demon power has returned, etc...
but sorry to dissapoint again D3 won't be revealed at WWI.

Anyways there is still hope as there are 4 games Blizzard is working on.
Starcraft2, WOW 2nd expansion, unannounced MMO and totally unknown game.
It may be Diablo 3, it may be World of Diablo or a totally new IP that will be announced this year by blizzard!
