The spells are gory and messy but there isn't much on their descriptions to imply malicious intent besides a couple of them. When I was designing them, I was thinking of how it would feel to unleash destruction yet stoically and patiently wait to see what happens even if you are the one doing the destructive act. This is why many of the runes have DoT or stacking dmg. In my mind, spells like Necrotic Cloud, Putrid Steps and even Hateful Apparition are benign in nature. Emotionless, cold, the ends to a mean.
I struggled a lot to find way for Iron Golem to utilize your weapon but the options I had to work with were not acceptable. I could make it store a legendary affix but *Slap* Blizzard announced kanai's, I could make it consume an item but if it would die, your legendary would be lost in vain. As much as I tried to stay faithful to the original D2 idea, it could not be utilized into D3. The only possible way would be to make it hold in its hands your equipped weapon but that would only be a visual thing and quite pointless.
