If you have the means, check out Mastodon's song "Joseph Merrick" off of their truly amazing CD, Leviathan (it's on iTunes). It reminds me of the music for Tristram in the original Diablo.
Quite true. Hellgate: London = First/Third person shooter style gameplay, randomly generated items, moddable guns, randomly generated 3D maps, online gameplay, hordes of demonic and undead monsters... headed by the creators of Diablo and Diablo 2. It's going to be sweeeet. I have Counter-Strike: Source and Diablo 2 to satisfy my needs for now.
I agree with killing demon556, a fps-style camera is appropriate in some cases, as in Oblivion (even there, you could switch to third person if you wanted), but Diablo doesn't fit the bill in my opinion. Diablo is about killing hordes upon hordes of monsters, often coming at you in all directions. I think that a third person perspective lends itself nicely because you have a view of the larger picture, rather than looking at just a slice of the action.
I'm sure you're like me that once you reach a certain level (probably in the early 80s), there is not much to do; at least not much that's fun. Sure you can magic find, but that gets tedious and boring almost immediately (for me). You can complete old quests that you've skipped, but they're few and on easier difficulties, and therefore aren't much of a challenge, and thus, not much fun. Chaos Runs? Baal Runs? Cow Runs? That's what everyone ends up doing, and they can be fun, for a time. But once you reach level 90 or so, leveling your character up seems like a chore, and that's why I've never had a character above 93; there was nothing there to keep me going.
That's why I suggest for Diablo 3 an Epic Level Quest system. Once you've reached a certain high level, you're eligible to take part in special quests that, in addition to being very difficult and time consuming, will reward you with massive amounts of experience. Here's what I was thinking (If Diablo 2 had an Epic Quest):
You've killed Baal, and you've reached level 90, and you're eligible for the Epic Quests. One of the quests could be, for example, that Azmodon and Belial have surfaced following the other Evils' defeat (how? I don't know, just humor me), hoping to reign over the mortal world, and you're faced with the task of stopping them. It's not part of the main quest (which you've completed upon killing Baal), but it affords the player more opportunities for earning large amounts of experience without all the tedium. Again, that was just my example using Diablo 2.
For Diablo 3, I'm thinking that there should be a similar EQS (Epic Quest Systsm). However the list of Epic Quests shouldn't be static; that is to say, every once in a while, Blizzard will release new content via patches that adds new Epic Quests.
If there is an experience cap that restricts your level, then being within a few levels of that cap would qualify you for the Epic Quests. Let's say that initialy, when Diablo 3 is released, the level cap is 40 (just an arbitrary number I picked). Also assume that reaching level 40 will be difficult. You'll be eligible for the Epic Quests at, say, level 35 (again, arbitrary). So you reach level 35, you do a few of these quests, and you're happy. Blizzard releases an expansion which raises the experience cap to 65. There would be a series of Epic Quests for that Expansion, available say, at level 60. And so on.
Yeah, I don't want to repeat anything here, as I agree with most of everyone's reasons; but one of the main things is: sometimes I don't want to "go to [unpronouncable city name] and find [obscure alchemic ingredient/key/other inane thing]" where you often have to do it stealthily. Sometimes I want to kill everything in sight with a barrage of spells or a volley of arrows or a whirlwind of sword slices, without regard. While the former is fun sometimes (as in Oblivion), I don't want to feel obligated to play longer than I have to, if you catch my drift. With Diablo, you could play for a half an hour or so befor school or work and still accomplish something, while in Oblivion (which is amazing, by the way) you feel obligated to play for a very exended period of time due to its very involved character development system.
"More domain name fun. Ricard sends word that on 24th March Blizzard registered the diablo3.es (Spain) domain. They recently also aquired the diablo3.de domain from a third party. Before announcement of the title they'll want to gather up as many domains and that includes pre-owned ones as is the case with the German one. Whether the announcement is imminenet (E3 in May) or a little way off (Blizzcon in October) we're not sure but betting on either is safe."
Make of that what you will (and sorry for the lack of posts as of late).
