So seeing as for once I've decided to go melee, not surprised that to say im dissapointed is an understatement, after DH was my initial choice, and Wiz right after, I'm thinking of rerolling.
I just see how squishy I am with lvl 60 gear, 40k~ hp, and resists, while Wizards can tank better then I do with force armor, regen, teleport, and diamond skin.
Do you think force armor will change soon? I always loved the idea of not needing armor and relaying on your shield to survive. Done this in Skyrim, and thought about force armor orianted build ever since the runes were introduced. Even though I have to admit this is a fairly broken spell, to say the least ;p
But seeing as force armor and teleport are the two main reasons I want to roll Wizard, I'm just not sure anymore.
I am in the same position as you, lvl 52 barb and he is just weak. I am getting OWNED in hell, same goes for my monk friend.

Playstyle is more important than FOTM. I'm a wizard lover and no matter what changes to the class i'll be there. If you enjoy your barb, sit back and farm a little(or a lot) for the necessary gear. Wizard get focus solely on dmg and die on the avaliability of their CDs and still progress. I'm confident once your barb gets enough gear you'll have a safer time with the same mobs than a wizard would as you don't need rely on your CDs to stay alive.
A lot of analysis is still going into the mechanical formulaes. I would expect a well planned mix of armor, dodge and resistances along with hp and drain would make a juggernaut of a barb that does massive damage. Rares can have both the offensive and defensive stats you need but they aren't easy to find. I hear many barbs can safely clear act 1 inferno, farm up SK, spidey or butcher with +5 valor and you'll have a good chance at rares.
