From what I understand, SecuROM can send information to EA. There has also been reported issues from it.
Really, its as bad as any virus. Its put in your computer without your consent, is not removed upon uninstallation of the game.
It doesn't really do anything particularily harmful, most information that it actually sends is probably limited to simple things like your computer specs. Otherwise it can check for things like Virtual Drives and prevent you from playing the game if there is one.
Many problems have been reported all over, from program malfunctions to equipment damage. Most of it is probably just myths.
Still, its one of those program that just can "potentially" annoy legal users, when the funniest thing is, Pirate get through it once (and quickly), use a crack and they don't have to ever care about it again.
There is something bad about the program, otherwise there would never have been a lawsuit against EA for including SecuROM with Spore.

And a topic in the official forum clearly showing you that they are lying about it:

I just used a SecuROM removal tool and this is right, I had SecuROM on my computer. If the game refuse to run, I'll crack it.
This is illegal and they can get in trouble for this. And I sure hope that they do.
