I've noticed a lot of negative feedback about the new patch. I wanted to throw out my (overall) positive opinion of the new patch. For reference, I play a WD.
This patch fixed Inferno.
When I first saw the damage numbers in the Brady guide for Inferno I knew it wouldn't be fun. I knew it'd be a one shot feast and that it would be lame. I was FORCED to go glass cannon because even if you went all out defensive gear, you'd still get 2 shot in Acts 3 and 4 and you'd lose at least 30k dps and spend millions on gear.
I shouldn't have to go into much detail about why getting 1 shot leads to a lame and boring game. It takes all of the strategy out of the game. Health potions and health globes (a very good system) are completely worthless. Abilities that heal or reduce damage are worthless. Every turns into a 1 dimensional game of "don't get hit". You're forced to fight every single monster and it leads to a ton of frustration when a cheap monster insta-kills you (terror demons). Inferno pre-patch was cheap (not hard) and simply not very fun.
After the patch.... there's actually a reason to pick up resist and vit as a WD. In my defensive gear (36k hp, 550 phys resist, 36k dps) I can take 3-5 hits from most monsters. Things that SHOULDN'T hit hard don't anymore. If I get hit by an archer or spear thrower... it hurts but it doesn't kill me instantly. However, if I get hit by the slow behemoth over there... I WILL get 1-2 shot and that's okay.. that DOES add strategy. Now I have to decide if I should eat that arrow and just keep dpsing or should I dodge it. I need to decide when to use my healing skills and when to pick up that health globe that dropped a few seconds ago. The game is actually fun now.
There was one point where I was fighting a hard pack (Mortar, Waller, Reflects Damage, Jailer) and I decided to equip a shield.... and to my surprise.... it actually made a difference. Instead of getting trapped and destroyed by mortar, I was able to take 2-3 mortars when I was trapped. My dps was horrible and I would hit the enrage if I wasn't careful... but it was a perfect TRADEOFF between dps and survivabilty.
It seems like more builds are viable now that you can survive a few hits. I'm sure we'll start seeing more 2 handed barbs and possibly some close range WDs now.
I can see it getting too easy if you get good enough gear. I don't have that good of gear yet. Really though, that's how the game should be though. You should be rewarded from the game after you start getting good gear.
However, 1.0.3 didn't fix everything and there are still some major issues with the game. The loot system is still unrewarding in that over 50% of the gear you find in Act 3,4 isn't even lvl 60 gear. I understand the need for crap loots, but there is PLENTY of crap loot that is lvl 60+. I think it's a bad system if you know it's crap before you even identify it. It just creates a hopeless feeling in the player. No matter how it rolls, you know that lvl 55 weapon you just picked up will not be going anywhere but to the vendor.
Also, the repair costs are a bit ridiculous. Unless you horribly overgear the content, you will still die if you take on the harder packs. The game punishes players who want to clear all content. They went way overboard on the repair costs. They were too low before but now they're too high. It's too hard to gain ANY gold while farming now. You shouldn't have to farm/buy gold just so that you can do harder content.
Finally, the changes to chests and destructibles is probably the worst change they've made to the game to date. There is no reason to destroy destructibles now and they should just be removed from the game in my opinion. Chests.... they're just depressing now because all that ever drops is whites now. An exciting part of the game has now been removed and that's a shame. I understand why it was removed but I wish they could have found a better way instead of harming people that play the game.
Hope that wasn't too long... but maybe everyone complaining should stop worrying about the nerfs done to their class and adapt to the game... it's better now... trust me.
