Can we all agree D3 needs to expand on the current D2 hostile system and improve it? The current D2 system is fine and WOULD work for D3 but I think we all agree it needs to be looked at again from both sides of the table.
I personally FULLY support that PK still be in D3 because at the end of the day Diablo is supposed to be a role playing game. Players should be able to chose how they play the game and not be forced into rule sets based on how certain portions of the population feel. That's the true essence of what an RPG is supposed to be.
Conversely I hated being ganked by xxx levels on epic mounts that couldn't be outrun (as convenient was it was when it happened when food was ready or I was eating anyway). WoW is great fun having reached max level, joining a great guild, grouping up with mates running stealth missions into horde cities, BG groups, fighting horde raids outside instances.
In that new post, you are confusing even level PvP with high - low level sandbagging where no number of low levels can stand up VS a high level toon. Guess which one is done by most "pr0 PKERZ".
First of all Bishoak or whatever his name was is a carebear. Second of all in his "post" about PK he sounded like he was talking about the hostile system in D1:
"I definitely remember running with my friends, and someone toggles it, and bam everyone is dead and your one friend is laughing. Ok, ok, good joke I guess, and then you run back and *bam*, you've toggled it to get them back. After a while everyone usually agrees to a truce because it's just a waste of time. But I also remember running with random players and losing extremely nice items because of it?"
What the hell is he talking about? His friends going hostile for fun? Losing items? Toggling hostile randomly in a group of friends? YEAAAA OKAYYYY. This guy has no clue what-so-ever. He sounds like he never even played D2 - which the hostile system was far superior.
I also don't know how much more cooperative you can get with a game like D2 or D3. You join a party. You go kill. I see lots of room for improvement there!!!! NOT!!!!
So in order to play without being PKd I should, set a level limit, make it a private game, join a clan, only play with friends, and go to town or leave the game if a PK comes.
That's a lot of work for many players when on the other hand, PKing can be disabled, problem solved for many people.
Let's be serious here... how often was this really ever a problem? 1 out of 20 games? 50 games?
Unless you're soloing all the time in public games? I fail to understand how anyone could possibly have a problem avoiding someone trying to kill them in D2. You quite possible would have to be brain dead.
I honestly hope you're kidding. I enjoy PvP, but random PKing just doesn't serve a purpose.
It creates a more open ended gaming experience. I hate to use WoW as an example but playing on a PvP server leveling from 1-60 was one of the most enjoyable gaming experiences I've had.
Also as a SIDE NOTE: come one people this D2 were talking about here. Not WoW, not some huge time sink of an MMO. Quitting the game and starting a new one is not that big of a deal.
D3 is centered around cooperative play, and that can't be achieved very well with games having to be closed all the time to avoid PKs.
PKing might not even BE in Diablo.
PvP will still be there though.
Yes it can. Got friends? You might want to look into that....
In fact when I played D2 I was in a private pvp clan that was close to 50 people strong. We had our own rules based on balance issues and went from there. You may have heard of GimmeItam on USWest?
I never played in public games. EVER. Always with friends. Always in private games.
What is beyond me is that anyone can defend PKing? You want to go PK someone, go play Call of Duty? Or don't you because there you will face people of equal or better skill that will own you? When you play 1on1 basketball, will you only play against people half your age? When you arm wrestle, will you only do it against your grandmother?
I think it adds a human element to the game, it actually feels more dangerous. That's the risk you run from making public games.
If it's that much of an inconvenience to use the helpful built in features of the game you're never going to see the other side of the argument.
This is DISRUPTING GAME PLAY, one of the bullet points shown at the WWI was the FAST ACTION gameplay, with hardly any distractions. Pking, going to town, leaving a game, defeats this purpose. So does making it Private, just cause of rampaging idiots(pkers)
I want to play with players at my level. I want to play in private games. I want to keep people I don't know out of my games. That's what those features are for first and foremost.
As an added bonus they work pretty good against PK prevention.
Learn to use them, you're gaming experience will be 100 times better.
Because even if you do all those it's a major inconvenience to you having to start a new game and get a new group, and the PK still gets his jollies even if you leave because he "intimidated" you.
So play with friends? So place a level restriction on the game you're in? Is one player near your level really going to take out your whole group? How do they even know where you are exactly when they can't see your location? In D2 you have every advantage over people trying to kill you.
And if you need a baby sitter 24/7 from getting "pked" when there's tons of ways to avoid being killed then you should go back to playing single player.
I hope to god the make a separate realm for you guys.

There is no solution to the problem. People want both. You have to find a middle ground.
It adds the most important thing that any game can ever have:
Skill
make game
set level restriction to 5 levels
...
what's the problem?

What about them? They can't join a clan. There's only 1000 of them out there,
Oh wait, add that to the list:
Join a Clan.

Private games
Level restrictions
Make a town portal, head to town
Leave the game
Why this even an issue with some people is beyond me.
EDIT: Also for the record I was never PKed in D2.
