Yeah I can guarantee we'll see a ton of mods then. I think Oblivion probably has one of the largest mod communities ever. Especially among well known games.
One thing that worries me, (besides the no visual damage) is weather the dragons will be a rare encounter in the wild, completely random and exciting, or if they will always be at the same spot on every playthrough.
The dragons literally just fly around the entire country. Where you meet them is entirely random. If you go to the official game website, they have a page with links to a ton of great interviews that answer a lot of questions like this. The trouble is sifting through everything you already know.
I love the whole idea of actually cooking your food this time. I wonder how that system will work out. I mean, if you were the real adventurer type and absolutely did not use fast travel, you could set up camps every night and cook all your stuff.
Precisely so! I did that when I played Oblivion. Well, in my head, anyway. That's what adds the realism. The problem I have with adding this level of depth to the game is that I also don't want to be bogged-down with all kinds of ridiculous GUI's and timers and status defects. All of that just gets annoying.
So... I would greatly enjoy them upping the visualization of crafting, cooking, and harvesting. (The latter we know they at least do so for the NPC's.) But I don't want it to really become a mechanic. Anything that is a game mechanic usually means you have more of the game interfering in the immersion, unless it's done well.
Gothic's cooking didn't really include any kind of GUI whatsoever. It was a matter of having a pan in your inventory, w/e it was it you wanted to cook, and a fire.
Don't know if they want to go deeper than that but I hope it's not too tied to the skill system.
Well that's sort of how alchemy was in Oblivion. I dunno I'm a sucker for crafting. I hope we can craft lots of items. Even if it's just cooking food. You know we see that blacksmith and they talk about doing any profession we see, I wonder if we can make weapons and armor.
Damn. That asexual chick doing the interview was a real boner killer. I mean, I may not be for the other extreme of hot chicks hijacking the video game industry's side jobs, but...
And she even asked if you could ride the dragons? Fuuuuck that. And I'm glad there's no mounted combat. Go play your WoW, split-end hair bitch.
Character customization is pretty awesome it sounds. I just hope the game presents your character in a way more that doesn't force you to manually rotate your camera around just to see your face.
Yeah, that chick was just... I don't even know, I would've picked another person to do the interview in a heartbeat (preferably a discernible gender).
But, yeah, I like the way the Char. customization is sounding too. I especially liked it when he said "fake eyes," now that's going to add even more character.
And I don't even want to ride dragons. What is this, fucking Dreamworks?

I hate the way you cling to ignorance and pass it off as innocence
Well that was my problem with dragons in the first place. I know this sounds like a dumb complaint about a fantasy game, but dragons are just too fantastic for my tastes. But I figured, well, they'll be rare encounters and it's not like they're in a cave guarding a treasure hoard. But the notion that you would ride them in a game like this...and that she even had the audacity to ask that was just hella lame. How are you supposed to fear the dragons in this game if you know there's a chance you can tame them and ride them? And she still even had to ask if there would be mounted combat just in case riding dragons wasn't enough.
And honestly, my hostile response toward that interviewer was really based on her apathetic attitude and total lack of personality. It was as if she couldn't care less that she was having an exclusive interview with a Skyrim developer. You wanna see some really excellent interviews with game developers check out the crew on Giantbomb. Those guys totally deliver. Their interviews are always interesting and they ask more intuitive questions.
Yeah I don't expect there to be a cooking or crafting minigame but I think gathering skills would be pretty cool. I don't want my character to have to go out mining, but if they wove it into exploring it'd be good. Like I have a quest in the cave to kill some necromancers or something, and the ore can be found on the walls. I don't want it to level up or anything, more just gathering it for making stuff.
Anyways, I'm fine with dragons, but riding them LOL. Only if I can name him Falkor, and he's a luckdragon.
Also lol @ that interviewer. You guys sure that isn't a man? <_<
Oh wow. Lots of crafting and recipes for food etc. Looks like I'll get some of what I'm wanting.
We are getting tools; for the PC, they're shipping the game with the Creation Kit (or, at least, shipping it out very close to the actual release date).
They also want or wanted to include modding tools with console versions, but they couldn't get Sony and Microsoft to cooperate.
I think I want Skyrim for the PC. Besides D3, this game is helping to motivate me in investing in a new machine. At first it might have seemed silly to get a new rig just for D3, but lately I've been thinking Skyrim will really help justify the expense.
Also, why is Gamepro magazine so annoying? I was reading through it cause they had an article about Skyrim, and there was another article about why PC Gaming is superior to consoles. Besides its flow of typos, it also had the most petulant tone. Why the fuck do people care anymore? The choice is always still theirs. If you have the freedom to go console or pc gaming or both, then what is there to debate? It's not like a referendum is coming up soon that will force you to choose one over the other leaving the other illegal. Seriously, the tone of this article sounded like, "God! Why are people using consoles! Gyyod! Just stop using them! Mommy, help me!"
Sorry, I had to get that out. I didn't want to start a new thread about how annoying I'm finding this magazine to be.
I only read game informer, and that can be grating as well sometimes.
Anyways. Lots of good reasons to get a new computer. D3, Skyrim, Mass Effect 3 soon if you choose to do that, plus many more good games yet to be announced. The games usually look better on PC, well almost always, not to mention mods, and if you're really attached to a Xbox controller I bought a wired Xbox360 controller and it works just fine.
Yeah for newer games you don't even have to really configure or setup the Xbox controller. ME3 I'll be playing on console since I'll be exporting my characters into it which I've spent many many hours playing.
I only wish they'd make a game like Skyrim multiplayer. I wouldn't even desire any particular multiplayer mechanic to be in the game. I just think it would be cool to know there was someone else out there in this huge world I am exploring.

It would be creepy and exciting wouldn't it? You know there someone out there. There is no way to know where they are. And maybe you're in a dungeon exploring and they found you first, so they're hiding in the dark ready to jump out at you.
Why would HAVE to be that? There could be a limit on how many people entered the world. Even a limit of 2 or 3. What was exciting to me about the idea was the unlikelihood of encountering them but knowing they were still out there somewhere. It was just a nice dream is all. Nothing I actually expected them to make into the game.
Why would you have to do ANY of that? Siaynoq even said he didn't want any multiplayer mechanics. Just a simple multiplayer option.

There's an extraordinary amount of freedom when it comes to honing your character's skills. From the huge list of spells, found in tomes scattered around the world, to the runes that you can use to augment weapons. You can even poison your weapon by dipping it in spiders blood after you have felled one of the giant creepy crawlies. Most spectacular, however, are the "Dragon Shouts".
How frikkin' cool is that? You can poison your weapons and arrows by dipping them in blood.
