I have vista and my comp came with 15 months of McAfee.
I had a "false virus" try to get on once, message popped up saying it wanted you to click here to fix it and it would take you to the virus (ironically it was supposedly AVG that was gonna fix the situation, but when you actually looked at the address it was AGV - lol).
I also use CCleaner (thanks to Carloseus for that.)
When McAfee expires will most likely switch to AVG.

Yeah, that reminds me of some fake anti-virus viruses to warn people about. I've seen a few people run into them. Obviously it goes without saying that you shouldn't trust anything you don't remember downloading, but in case anyone runs into anti-virus plus or perfect defender, those are not anti-virus software. They are both programs that give false positives and require you to buy the full versions to remove them(then they have your credit card number).
I doubt many would fall for these, but I figured they're worth mentioning. I somehow got Anti-Virus Plus and it was a pain to get rid of. I think the only thing I could disable it with was Spyware doctor and needed AVG to actually get it off my machine.
Hmm, now when we're on the subject of Anti-viruses.
My Mac seems to be running a bit slow lately, I don't got an anti-virus because apparently my dear old mother thinks they are just a nuisance.
So anyhoo, should I get an anti-virus and search the PC for any pesky viruses?
Or is it just false alarm?
If it has been getting progressively slower I would just try a cleaner. If it was something you noticed as a sudden change(just started up one day and boom, slow) then yeah, give it a scan. Of course, I think it'd be good to get some virus protection regardless.
