Thats what I was getting at with the "slots" idea. But, yeah they wouldnt just be slots. They could implement a bag idea. This actually reminds me of the bigger and bigger ruppee bag that you can get in Zelda. It would be an interesting idea if that came about. Only you can carry as much and as many things as you want. I don't see why you guys are trying to make it more realistic. That would make the game so boring. It would be better not having a realistic theme to it. We're talking about a world with demons and magic. Albeit some people believe that there are actually demons and magic in our world.

They should use the inventory system from Divine Divinity. It was a big open space where you could drag anything to anywhere. There was no snap in grid.
