prehaps, but its was LOTR than the casting people saw him in and then they probably figured he could do a good job as a pirate with a sword. He was pretty unkown at the time of the castings for LOTR began, so without it would he be as famous?
one of the oldest German songs i know of is
Gukuk!Gukuk!
At night in the village the watchman cried "Eleven!" A very small elf was asleep in the wood - just at eleven! - And he thinks that the nightingale must have called him by name from the valley, or Silpelit might have sent for him. So the elf rubs his eyes, comes out of his snail-shell house, and is like a drunken man, his nap was not finished; and he hobbles down, tip tap, through the hazel wood into the valley, slips right up to the wall; there sits the glow-worm, light on light. "What are those bright windows? There must be a wedding inside; the little people are sitting at the feast, and fooling around in the ballroom. So I'll just take a peep in!" Shame! he hits his head on hard stone! Well, elf, had enough, have you? Cuckoo! Cuckoo!
i think its from around the 12th century. (coincidentially this is the song i get my user name from, (or is i?)) plus there is the Grimm Fairy tales, they are full of Elves and Dwarves, or Elfs and Dwarfs (almost all fairy tales dealing with wolves, monsters, fairies, magical creatures were written by the two Grimm Brothers)

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
