ok, i think a good way to start this would be to first tell how it could fit into the lore of D3...
the character would be the former king of a kingdom destroyed by demons and minions and what-not... After days/weeks of battle, the king escaped death with the help of 5 or 6 of his most loyal servants/guardians. After traveling across some deserts or oceans or whatever he lands in the Tristram area of Sanctuary...
Well, that was easy.
Ok, so here's the deal:
The fallen king would be a melee character with 5 or 6 guardians. One of the kings skill-tree's would be devoded to making his guardians stronger, such as buffs, auras, damage bonuses, and the like. The player would also be able to equip each of these guardians with various weapons and armors. (p.s. i know the characters in the game will already get mercs... after purchasing a merc, he would just be like one of the crew. When a merc is acquired, it would follow along like it normally would with any other character. Actually, the guardians would essentially work the same way as mercs....)
The 2nd skill tree would probably be for the "king's" melee attacks. You know, faster hit recovery, faster attack speed, that kinda generic b.s.
Im sure there are plenty of cool things for the third skill-tree as well, but i think you get the point already.
Pros of a "fallen King" caracter:
--It would quench many people's thirst for a necromancer or a summoner.
--You would be able to customize each of the "guardians" individually, thus making your quest for good armors/weapons all the more exciting...
--It would give the option of another melee style character without just being another paly or barbarian...
--If you had four of these guys playing co-op, it would be a cool, action packed battle of an army of good vs. an army of darkness (for the bruce campbell fans out there...)
--It would be plumb rowdy in PvP. Could you imagine two of these guys with their decked out guardians going at it on the battle field? It would be chaos, lol.
Cons:
--If you had 4 fallen kings playing the same level, there would be a lot of fighting going on all over the damn place. It might be kinda hard to follow... However, i dont think it would be as confusing as multiple necros with 40 minions apiece on D2...
--People playing as the "fallen king" would think they could just tell everybody what to do
Well, let me know what you think (and remember that its all really just in good fun... I mean, im sure blizzard isnt going to read this and grab it up and put it in the game, lol) so enjoy!
Noo, I don't like it, he's not a hero >< he's a fallen king followed by guardians, the heros would be the guardians, and having 5 guardians all the time would be kind of annoying to the other players.
But this just popped me something like a quest xD but those kind of quest will be in the game(protect someone like when rescuing Cain[I know the gameplay video is a set up but I think we will have to rescue him again])

I wouldn't go with 5 or 6, probably just 1 "royal guard".
5 or 6 would make the class waaay overpowered.
I like the idea of a skill tree devoted to making the guardian stronger though, good idea man.
His others would probably be something like combat skills, and perhaps demonic powers ?
Cuz seriously, if he's the king of the fallen, he's gonna have some spells/powers.
Like a "demonic rage" kind of power. It could work where you get heavy combat bonuses for a while, depending on how many skill points invested, then suffer a 30 second or so period of "exhaustion", where your abilities are lessened and you cannot rage again.
Another demonic power could be something like summoning lesser imps to help him and his guardian, maybe even ressurecting or commanding hostile imps to follow the king.
Yet another could be the ability to infuse your melee weapon with hellfire, granting a nova-type attack on a successful hit, it would knock back enemies, and deal signicifant damage.
Anywho, my 2 cents.

Ok, how about having 2 guards? and one skill-tree devoted to each. That would also keep the guards from being the same...
And just on a side note, each of the guards wouldnt be as powerful as the hero, just as the necromanvers minions werent as powerful... good points though...
and on another side note, the king would be a hero. I bet he was a rowdy warrior back in his day, and he ruled a large kingdom for many years, lol... now hes just a little past his prime and needs a little help from his loyal followers
Hmm, the idea of 2 different guards would work quite well.
1 skill tree for each guard, and one for the king himself.
I like it :D.
Either you could have the king be powerful, and the guards be not-so-much.
Or, have all 3 be equal. This would make him feel more like having control over 3 characters at once, as opposed to having 2 main character and 2 summons.
Buuuut, all 3 being equal would pretty much force people to use the 2 summons....

Honestly, the way people have interpreted what i wrote is not actually what i had in mind. What i meant was that the king would be human. Demons killed everybody in his kingdom and he bareley escaped with the help of his closest guards through a secret passage behind the throne room... I just like the discussion that followed and the new ideas, so i didnt correct anybody.
In retrospect there are a few things i would change about the character though.
I think it would be better served as a prince/princess, and only had 2-3 guards... maybe 2 melee and a ranged/magic user... well, i hope that clears it up
Alos on a side note, i think the prince's armors and whatnot would look really cool as he progressed thtough the game. Starting out he would have chain mail etc (not too different from the paly in D2), but his final armors would be very intricate and royal and king-like (probably golden with a crown on the helmet).
Could be a good class. I imagine the Fallen King and Guardians to be like Jehryn and his guards from Act 2.
I wouldn't make different trees to improve different guardians though. Just make one tab for Guardians and you could select either melee, caster or ranged abilities for them. All guardians should act the same way. If they didn't then you'd have certain guardians more powerful than others and I would find that annoying.
I also not too sure about gearing them either. I think just skill trees should be enough.

I've come for your children - Your first born
I'm the monsta - The boogieman
So mothers be warned - But you give them up gladly
I like the idea, however unless all the guardians are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay weak, it would be overpowered. I like the idea though. It would seem that it would make your main character really weak for it to be balanced. I think you should start out with one, and have a skill devoted to getting more, another to get more damage and health and so on. I'd have so many by the end Diablo would be swarmed. And have different types. A caster, a ranger, and a melee. Maaaaaaan... They're definitely not going to do this, but it would be so beast...

To make things more balanced the King would have ''Guardian Points''. He would start with something like 3 points. There would be a large list of different guardians to take - Shieldmans, Lancer, Archer, Magician, Priest etc... Each of those guardians ould have unic special skills and function, like shieldman been the best tanker, the archer been good for attack at distance, etc..
This way you can customise your Guardian Party, like a shieldman, a priest and a magician to a balanced party that mix attack and defence, 3 archers to a long ranged powered DPS, etc...
Also some Guardian would be more powerfull then others - like a Archmage guardian, that would cost 2 or even 3 points.
The trees could be one for Intelectual Guardians, like Prests and Magicians. The other would be for Military Guardians, loike the shieldmans and the archers. The last tree wiould be the Solo King, wich improve his own abilities (maybe even consume some Guardian Point to increase his own power).
Of course, the king and the guardians individually would be considered weak. Only when the kind consume his 3 Guardian Points to increase hes power alone is that he reach the power of a ordinary hero.
Also io don`t think guardians should use equipament, thats way to overpower. The kind would carry alot more equipament at once and this can be exploited by stacking some powerfull effect of some powerfull unics. Maybe other ways of customising the guardians alone by using skills.
This idea is 100% copied from age of conan necromancer. Thats execly how the necromancer works there.
