Nope, have not heard anyone asking for a limited color palette, doesn't mean dungeons should be bathing in green neon though.
The Petition says :
Darker dungeons without a blue/green environment, Diablo dungeons are dark and shadowy.
and
Slightly less colorful and less vivid outside scenarios
Darker and less colorful landscapes, Tristam never was colorful and beautiful
If you have two brain cells to rub together you'd see on multiple levels that COLOR IS AN ISSUE and maybe even the MAIN issue of the petition. Not only is it an issue, but more importantly, it is asking to be LIMITED. Hence, a LIMITED Palette or a specific Palette is being demanded by the people who signed the petition. That is a limited palette for Blizz to work with in the end. You said it yourself: "No use of neon green". That is limiting their choices.
(And the tombs aren't neon green silly ass)
Obviously, they are all part of a "varried color palette" are they not. So instead of neon, a couple of browns and greys and blacks wouldn't be such a bad idea.
There are browns and grays and blacks in the gameplay video. You guys are calling for more of those and less green. So your argument becomes "We want only certain colors used in the dungeon!" Again, that is calling for limited use of color. It also is an argument that implies that you know what's better for Diablo than Blizzard does, right? Well what if they want a green dungeon in their game? What's wrong with that again? It's too cartoony? Are you kidding me? Eeriee green lighting is used in film all the time to give it a gloomy, creepy atmosphere! Watch the Matrix and tell me that the green in that is "neon" and cartoony. Hah.
That depends about what realism you're talking about, Diablo's realism definately doesn't include lush forrests for example, Diablo's realism is much more brutal dark and corrupted then happy rounded cubical statues for example, Diablo's realism doesn't include out of proportion cartoony tables and chairs for example.
You just said that Blizzard can't put a lush forest in a Diablo game...wow. Ok, so what kind of "realism" are we talking about here? Where do we draw the line? Oh yeah - we draw the line wherever YOU say it should be right? Ok. So let's make a game under a specific pretense of what's considered "realistic" to you. And that will be a "true" Diablo game right? It sounds like a nightmare to me to try to make a game under those guidelines and it sounds restraining on the artists as well.
As for the tables and chairs comment - I really wonder how much you really know about design when you make comments like this. The table and chairs, first of all, are in proportion. What others have mention and I suppose you are talking about is that the table has "fat" legs. Fat legs on a table doesn't make them cartoony. Many chairs and tables have ALL kinds of designs and yes, tables/chairs in real life can have big fat legs on them! Some designers design totally weird tables and chairs that are still functional! You should know this. And did you even watch the video where the D3 art director explains why they used Big bold shapes? Watch it and think it through from a designers standpoint INSTEAD of the standpoint that you want the Diablo francise to remain the same thing over and over (which is odd to me because D2 changed the game and made the world grow and added a lot of color to the game and people loved it!) http://www.gametrailers.com/player/usermovies/235105.html
No, its when every "unimportant" aspect (whenever did any aspect become unimportant anyways? Makes no sense to me) contradicts with what is established that it becomes problematic.
What contradicts Diablo in what we've seen so far? I want a real contradiction - not some garbage about a table not looking real enough to you. I want to hear how D3 contradicts the older games. What you're calling a contradiction, most people are calling the game evolving into a more rich and vibrant experience.
What is a "dungeon/diablo" game?
Christ...*slaps forehead.
Anways, in both cases no, but that doesn't mean the exact opposite is "fine", atleast whatever replaces it should have sort of the same function.
It's not the exact opposite. The character does have a line of sight and things do trail off into shadowy blackness. Remember, we saw ONE tomb in D3 and it appeared to be well lit by candles and the like, so can we really complain about the game as a whole when we haven't seen the other dungeons yet?
Should all dungeons be dark and have limited colors or can we have some freakin' variety?
If you signed the petition then you called for:
The return of the light radius / shadow system from Diablo 1 and 2
So now you're saying you don't agree with that part of the petition? Interesting.
The current game? Everything has a reason, but assuming this reason is "because they know better" is just plainly naive, an other reason could be to just sell more, or out of fear, or out of incompetence, etc,...
Sales? Its a different team? Ask them.
This seems to be the third exact same question.
I don't even understand the "what happens over time" part, what are you refering to?
Can anyone make sense out of this seemingly illogical train of thinking?
No one is saying that Blizz knows better, but if you are going to say you know better than them then you sure as hell better back it up.
I don't want to take the time to go into the details of why D3 looks the way it does, but my theory on it is so that the game won't look dated graphically for a long, long time. If you don't understand this concept then please study up on Blizzard and how they approach their game making.
Did anyone say it can't?
YES. The petition that you most likely signed says that you guys don't want:
Outside scenarios with vivid colors, beautiful forests with colorful vegetation, shinny and beautiful waterfalls where even rainbows take place.
and that you WANT:
Darker and less colorful landscapes, Tristam never was colorful and beautiful
So what do you have to say to that?
You already answered you're own question, namely they weren't.
My god. Do you really think I didn't know that I answered my own question? Damn it's like pulling teeth here. Ok. So you admit that D2 had rich colors so why not expand upon that in D3?
Thanks for the Chance!!!

I will respond to the rest later, but this comment is really terrible, how much WE know about design? maybe you should consider how much you do, because just take a look at this image.
Then tell me honestly that the table is of any sort of "realistic" design, it barely even qualifies as a table, that girl right there couldn't even sit in the seat and put her legs under it. the table's top is almost as thick as the legs are high! It looks like a lego model. The table and chairs are clearly NOT "in proportion". It IS cartoon like, if you have any training in this sort of stuff you surely must be able to see something as basic as that.
Creepsville, you're just as bad as doppel. That conversation is going nowhere. You both have your own opinions, who cares what the other thinks. Sign the petition or don't sign it, thats all you can do that is effective.
I can't believe the level of trolling most of you have fallen into. Dopple you just made my day with how angry and mindless you've become. It's not worth posting back and forth responses to things like:
Ugh, this idiot's skull seems to be getting thicker by the minute.
and even the
kthxbai.
closer no less. How cool is that?
Calling me an idiot over and over and then not being able to even discuss one topic about the art direction are even refute one thing I've said doesn't do you credit. That's what a kid does and I now seriously doubt that you know much if anything about art and design. If you did you could talk with me about it instead of misunderstanding most of what I've said. I gave you the perfect window to discuss multiple design choices by Blizz and all you did was call me a retard over and over. You're an amateur artist at best who doesn't know his shit and I think I'm done slamming you with your own petition. I really wanted a real debate too. And it's too hard trying to piece together the sentences of an angry kid who comes across as more of a chimp bashing himself in the skull with a rubber mallet over and over again. You're a waste Dopple. And I'm not going to spend any more energy trying to discuss things with an tantrum throwing kid.
I'm sorry that your petition didn't change anything and that the net is laughing at you. You complained about something silly and you signed a petition and you kinda deserve what you got.
Yeah right, just look at the number of posts/replies you did and how long and boring they are. Starting at page 61...
Sorry I debated some things. I should be criticized for that by someone with nothing to add. Makes sense to me. Also please analyze my content instead of the length of the posts. Thanks.

Corwyn,
I hope you get what I'm saying because this is what I mean by people not knowing the difference between stylized and cartoony:
The table has big features and is at an angle which makes you think it is lower than it really is. Tables can be designed this way even in real life. But the features are NOT exaggerated or bubbly. They are big and stylized so that they read well on screen and lend themselves to a weighted, epic look. And that's exactly what Blizz has been saying all along about their design choices. It's solid game making and it does have a realism to it, though it is also a bit surreal at the same time in order to pull you into the fantasy they've created.
Look at the table in the foreground and tell me that she can't sit in it. Just because it's not hyper-photo realistic doesn't mean that it isn't realistic. If you need to look up what Stylized means then please do. Understanding that will open a whole new world for you.

Sigh, what is cartoon like to you? to me its almost exactly what you described, over emphasized big, chunky and solid shapes. I know what Stylization is, I have done graphic design, but mainly I am a 3d modeler and work on games and I can tell you right now that her legs aint gonna fit. As I said before I have no problem with Stylization, clumsy ugly Stylization akin to Warcraft however I find highly unappealing and something that doesn't befit the Diablo universe. I can see where blizzard is coming from with the whole make things chunky to make it visible from the camera angle but seriously they took it wayyy to far.
Then tell me honestly that the table is of any sort of "realistic" design, it barely even qualifies as a table, that girl right there couldn't even sit in the seat and put her legs under it. the table's top is almost as thick as the legs are high! Heh, debating ? More like IMPOSING YOUR POINT OF VIEW. That's what I pretty much analyzed from your long monologues. And why should I add anything when all there is to be said is explained quite toroughly in the petition, something that you just can't seem to accept and let go.
I love it. I IMPOSED my point of view! I lined everyone up and told them they would be shot if they didn't see my point of view! I'm too grown up to keep dealing with childish claims like this. Consider yourself ignored Yar.
Kenzai - Like we both said, a lot of it comes down to personal taste and opinion - so how are you going to prove me wrong on that? However, if you want to prove me wrong on agreeing with the direction Blizz took D3 then be my guest. I think that Blizz knows what they are doing a bit better than a kid who just plays their games. Sorry, call me crazy but I am tired of you kids, who know jack and shit about art direction telling me that you know Diablo better than Blizzard does. The claim is silly and the desire to change everything in the game including the style of a single gargoyle on a staircase is asinine. A freakin' gargoyle that looks different than another one does not mean it is more "diablo". It's all just whinny people with an overcritical eye on Blizzards work as usual.
impose |imˈpōz|
verb
1 [ trans. ] force (something unwelcome or unfamiliar) to be accepted or put in place : the decision was theirs and was not imposed on them by others.
No, you just don't know what the word means. Misusing the word in such a dramatic way is childish. Have a good day.
Yeah you nailed it ,the describes pretty much what you're trying to do. See ? No lining up at gun points. You're just dissing yourself here....
Now you have a problem. You have to explain how I forced my point of view to be accepted or put in place. This might be hard because all I did was type some arguments/jokes on a forum. Did I force you to change your mind? Did my text jump off the screen at you and threaten you to agree with me?
I think you're just not a very sharp critter. But that's okay. To think that I thought showing you an actual definition would help you learn something...:(
Wait a sec,...I want your inane comments to stop so I'll just say that you win. You win at the internets, sir. There.
How that single gargoyle on a staircase looks DOES affect the game.
What you say is like, "who cares, there may be some crappy figures -which dont fit Diablo- in the game, theyre just a few!!!"...
Not so. The gargoyle Blizz put in isn't crappy. It simply does not look the way YOU want it to. It is stylized and looks fine. Then some assclown with photoshop put in ANOTHER stylized gargoyle that has simply a different look, but is still the same damn thing in the end. Supposedly the style of the new gargoyle is more "diablo"...which is ridiculous because IT IS WHAT IT IS: A stylized gargoyle.
And im not saying "like Diablo II", i mean the Diablo 'universe'.
Welcome to the evolution of the Diablo Universe. It's nice here and it's still dark and stylized and creepy and fun as ever.
I'm tired of making points and having you keep droning on about how you don't like the look of a small stone gargoyle on a staircase in a video game.
My point is that you can't say that the Gargoyle is not "Diablo" enough. You can saw it's crappy all you want but it changes nothing.
It's hard to take people seriously when they bring little to no credit to the table when they attack subjective things like "how dark" a game is. So I usually opt to go with the PROS at Blizz over the kids who play their games. I think that's a safe bet. If another game designer freaks out over a gargoyle on a staircase I'll listen but if all he can come up with is "crappy" then we all get nowhere.
Could it be that the Diablo world isn't what you thought it was? Is that possible? I think so.
I played D2 a loooooong time ago. I recently reinstalled and I'm going to play through again.
You know people still feel the game is just as creepy and dark as ever, if not more so right? grays and browns and smaller shoulder pads does NOT equal "more dark".
Again, your talking like not giving a shit if there are some flaws in the game as long as it looks good "overall".
Why 'good' when it can be 'perfect'?
This argument above relies on the idea that a decent looking gargoyle that isn't to your personal taste means that the game is flawed. It also relies on me not caring if the game has flaws...which is odd,...of course I want a great game and who doesn't dream of a perfect game?
So to you I say: Irrelevant.
To other sentences of that quote where kinda pontless and unclear.
Sorry, but there were points - it's just that I'm talking to a kid who doesn't understand what I am getting at. And that's ok. But I am going to stop feeding myself to the cluesless hounds now.
You probably forgot what Diablo is lke from playing too much WoW.
Yeah, that's it!!! Oh wait - when Blizz themselves went back and played the game they saw a colorful world! They saw the opposite that you did! Funny how that works huh? Watch the video all the way through and check out the art direction comments and then tell me that you are right again. http://www.gametrailers.com/player/usermovies/235105.html
To whom was that pointed at ???
To the guy who said that D3 wasn't as dark as is should be a couple posts ago. YOU. hahaha.
Thank god. After you watch it and get some insight from the creators themselves on their work you'll see that all that all the little misunderstandings/arguments you posted above were a waste of time.
It's funny people want that OP pic considering the story says it's been 20 years and they havn't been invaded. Do you seriously think the world is that dark after 20 years of no invasion after the worldstone was destroyed?
I'm pretty sure diablo 3 starts out the way they have the game now and ends up getting darker and darker as you progress just like D2...
Seriously Give blizzard a chance to show off later levels lol?
The worldstone is the only thing separating the mortal world from heaven and hell. It became corrupted by Baal and had to be destroyed. Wow lol...

The worldstone is the only thing separating the mortal world from heaven and hell. It became corrupted by Baal and had to be destroyed. Wow lol...
Right, but Blizz said themselves that there has not been an invasion by Hell at the start of D3. And many people even don't believe the story of Diablo and think it is a myth.
So he said that he was remembering the previous games dark and grey.
The same always happens to me when not playing Diablo for a while, and i believe its because of the dark "feeling" the game has.
Right. And what happens when they played through the game?
That doesnt mean they can add every fancy color to the game as long as it 'feels' dark.
The visuals are a great part of that feeling.
LOL. So now it's "fancy" color? Get a clue. The color in D3 isn't fancy. Stop nitpicking.
The colors in those previous games were probably the outdoor environments, but not the monsters theirselves and 'corrupt' places like the Catacombs or the Durance of Hate etc.
And you claim to play Diablo? There were all kinds of bright red and orange monsters in those dungeons.
You can make all the forests and clear outdoor environments colorful and happy, BUT not the dungeons and monsters.
There isn't a single colorful,happy monster/dungeon in D3 yet.
The petition says remove rainbows and such, i dont know about that, but most of it makes sense. I just want to see the 'corrupt' places to be darker.
We haven't seen the whole game yet. Just wait.
The armor of the barb is something totally different though, and i have yet to see Blizz saying that they specially made it or something like they talked about the colors.
All I know is that the bigger and more insane my armor got in D2, the more powerful I felt my character had become. What you have with the armor is a personal grievance that's a little over the top because you're calling for realistic joint movements on the armor of a fantasy video game character. It's just too little a thing to be bothered about and comes down to personal taste.
Most of what you're saying I agree with creepsville. But you can't tell me you actually like that idiotic random blue/green WoW-shit lighting in the dungeon scene at the start of the gameplay video. About 30-40% of that dungeon literally looks like a top-down view of a WoW area, right down to the silly blocky statues (the monsters look evil/dark enough at least :P).
Edit: reading that stupid link in your sig makes me rethink my statement. A legitimate concern about the artistic direction this game is taking is totally different from random whining. What if the art/lighting isn't the only area in which D3 resembles WoW? Then a bunch of idiots who play WoW will buy it, eat it up, and Blizzard will lose what they have left of their true fans. The ones who loved SC and Diablo 2, even WC3, who then played WoW and were sickened by that trash. If this game is anything like WoW in stylistic direction or gameplay, I will finally have an answer to whether this "new Blizzard" (post Bill Roper and North) deserves any of my money ever again. A lot of other serious gamers will as well.

The table has big features and is at an angle which makes you think it is lower than it really is. Tables can be designed this way even in real life. But the features are NOT exaggerated or bubbly.
No, you just don't know what the word means. Misusing the word in such a dramatic way is childish. Have a good day.
There.
Welcome to the evolution of the Diablo Universe. It's nice here and it's still dark and stylized and creepy and fun as ever.
This argument above relies on the idea that a decent looking gargoyle that isn't to your personal taste means that the game is flawed. It also relies on me not caring if the game has flaws...which is odd,...of course I want a great game and who doesn't dream of a perfect game?
So to you I say: Irrelevant.
Sorry, but there were points - it's just that I'm talking to a kid who doesn't understand what I am getting at. And that's ok. But I am going to stop feeding myself to the cluesless hounds now.
To the guy who said that D3 wasn't as dark as is should be a couple posts ago. YOU. hahaha.

Right. And what happens when they played through the game?
LOL. So now it's "fancy" color? Get a clue. The color in D3 isn't fancy. Stop nitpicking.
And you claim to play Diablo? There were all kinds of bright red and orange monsters in those dungeons.
There isn't a single colorful,happy monster/dungeon in D3 yet.
We haven't seen the whole game yet. Just wait.
I hope the explanation they did on colors helped though. You can have a dark, but colorful world. Did you read this article on the topic? If not give it a read: http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2008/07/02/diablo-iii-art-direction/

Sorry man, but I have a sweet tooth for creepy green light. I likes its. Not everyone is going to like it though.
