I've beeen thinking about this for a while, thinking about a new "mode" or something different that Blizzard should implement into the "Adventure Mode" in a future patch or expansion, and I wanted to share with you this idea: "The Trial" (YES! the return of "the trials").
What is the Trial? I was thinking about something similar to the "raids" in WoW,The players would enter the Trial, and try to make their way through legions of ennemies, fight and kill several different bosses and finaly finish the Trial by killing the "big boss" at the end and loot.
NOW,explanations:
1.The basics
-You need a "Trial Key" to open the "Trial" (the key has higher chance of droping from Rift Guardians at higher Torment difficulties).
-There is different "Trial Keys" opening different Trials (those keys drop randomly from Rift Guardians).
-When entering one of the Trials, the players fight their way through the map (which is NOT or SLIGHTLY generated randomly) and kill the different bosses.
2.The Bosses/Loot system
-ONLY the bosses drop items.
-There is a total of 4 bosses, plus a 5th Boss (Lets call him "the Big Boss").
-The first 4 bosses drop "normal" items (legendaries, crafting materials,gems,etc..) and [new] very rare legendaries (really powerfull, with a chance to be Ancient).
-The last boss (The Big Boss) drops the same as the others but have a chance to drop "visual customization" items (epic wings, epic transmogs, pets, epic portraits,etc..)
-The chances to drop the "very rare legendaries" and "visual customization" items are VERY low.
-The faster you kill the different bosses..the higher the chances are to drop epic items.
3.Difficulty
For the difficulty of the Trials,I don't have a clear/precise idea, but I would like it to be kind of painful, but still keeping a good balance..anyways,that's just a random idea loll.
So,this is my idea..what do you guys think? Would it be fun? What are your ideas for a new implementation in the game?
so... you want GR with 5 instead of 1 boss, that drop more loot corresponding to your clear times, are less RNG based (which will never happen in diablo, but keep wishing) and also drop vanity items (e.g. china real money stuff)?
Not sure what you are trying to accomplish, but diablo isn't WoW and this is way too similar to GRs, just with 5 bosses. And since it's not WoW, you can expect to have 5 random rift guardians as bosses, so it's basically "oh yay those 4 perditions didn't bother me until mega uber cold snap had his way with me"
(If you want to fight multiple bosses, do uber runs after a TX rift so you have a rift, a RG, and 4 "harder" bossfights)
I don't like when people say that "it's not wow" so we can't have that or this. I'd love to see more events in the game, especially "challenge" type events like greater rifts. More variety is always better, and events that would allow to do something in bigger group that 4 man would make game better rather than worse imho.
I wouldn't call it specifically "raid" but rather something that is:
- crafted for group play only and for more than 4 ppl
- have infinite scaling similar to greater rift, so both casual and pro players would find it fun
- have challenging mechanics (bosses), that require team play
- have great prizes and can't be spam farmed (for example some device that is slowly gaining charges, each charge let's you enter the portal for that "raid" realm)
Look into Marvel Heroes for a game that does this pretty well in an ARPG. Raids are definitely one of the most fun things in that game. But then again, there are a lot more "classes" but it could still work here. When they first released, Ubers kind of felt like raid bosses.... but yeah, something more than that of course.
We have awesome bosses with tactics in-game already, like Malthael, Belial, Azmodan, The Ram etc... but they are so weak by now even in TX that you can't even see the whole boss fight let alone what is the tactic, a "boss mode" would be far more engaging than "raids" imo, something like this: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/16202110230
I made that thread some time ago, but i still hold true to it, some things have changed like the bounty rewards but the mode is still solid.

Thank you for posting this idea I see so much merit to it.
Blizzard deserves big points for basically reinventing the game by integrating rifts and greater rifts to create some semblance of and end game, but elements are still missing. A HUGE missing element is the option of viable builds that are geared toward single target damage. Currently, every single viable build is an AOE build because AOE is all there is to do in end game i.e. rifts and grifts. Yes, the rift guardian at the end is single target damage but there is no extra skill involved in killing most of the rift guardians, they are essentially just super buffed mobs.
What Diablo III needs more of are boss fights like The Butcher where there are several stages, the environment is a threat as well as the boss, and you must adjust your play style to the specific threats of each stage. And further, there should be epic rewards for defeating big bosses. I don't know about you guys but I don't feel a sense of achievement after slaying a rift guardian the way I do after bringing down a big bad boss and being rewarded with a unique, rare item dropped by that boss (kind of like in Diablo II).
I will create a post of my own with some ideas to make the end game more dynamic and this is an excellent addition to the brainstorm. I typed this reply on my phone while on my work break so please excuse any brevity or incomplete thoughts. Looking forward to contributing and hearing more great ideas like this. Diablo III is fun now but has so much more potential. I hope its gaming community continues to attract players with more ingenuity like you and the game will just keep getting better and better!

Good night,
Kappagedon
What I don't like.
Trials = It was a bad idea. That's why it's not in the game anymore.
Cosmetic for in game loot = Never gonna happen. Because cosmetics are tied to paid model like the one they have in Asian region.
Difficulty = If it's too hard like 60+ gr hard the content will be limited to uncasual players making the gape between those two type too big.
Raid = It's not WoW it's D3. There is a reason why people prefer Diablo 3 instead of WoW. And if I remember "raid" consist of more than 4 people.
What I like.
Somekind of rift or difficulty level but with more boss and more reward.
Very rare loot for very rare boss (rng boss for rng loot) without the difficulty. (like the not so cow level or the vault) ((or the cow rift))
Killing bosses faster for the chance of having more (rare or not) loot.
The season is underway. Don't know if I'll make it through.
Akarat save me !
Just make bosses more interesting, read: holy sanctuary (act 4) style events in a boss fight.
