So my dad wants me to make a video of jewelry being made on the design program so he can put a tv in the store front window and advertise what we do when we open a store. The only thing is that I don't want to use a video camera to do it. I've watched things on youtube where people have video of their desktop and whatever they are doing without using a camera. How do they do this. Like the videos of Force playing PoE I want to be able to record like that. And even when he does the D3 podcasts you can see him go on his desktop sometimes and open different programs.
But to summarize for you, I use fraps with the Vista trick to record full screen. It's 37$. You will have to re-encode videos into a compressed format though for youtube. Files are too big from fraps (gigs). I like Fraps because you can check-off computer sound AND microphone sound at the same time.
(Btw the vista trick is to press windows-key+tab and then the Aero alt-tab opens, then you hit record on fraps and release the keys and now your screen is being recorded).
You can try Camtasia or w/e, I haven't.
Finally, there is also Microsoft Expression Encoder Screen Recorder (comes in Expression package I believe). I have used this and it is good and produces decently sized files.
Quicktime Pro on macs can also record screen and produces nice file sizes. I have used this on my Mac. I don't know if the PC one can record screen but probably.
FYI I know these things because I've been recording 100+ sc2 editor tutorial vids on my sc2 channel, so I've gone through some hoops lol.

^ All very sound advice!
I too use FRAPS (www.fraps.com), and so do most who record PC gameplay, it's just the go-to program. Do the Vista Trick he mentioned to be able to record your desktop. To compress Windows Movie Maker is a great free program.

Hey Force! Good to know you use it too
I haven't used Movie Maker in a while, good point to mention. I'm using Sony Vegas these days to edit... really intuitive and easy I find.
FYI I admire your channel, very professional and good quality. I noticed you kept one channel for sc2/d3... I decided to split mine since my sc2 one is VERY niche just for editing. Time will tell if I made the right decision haha.
Thanks for all the info guys. I'll watch the video tomorrow morning, everyone is sleeping and I have no headphones. One question though I have W7, will it matter because I watched couple minutes of the video and you are using Vista. I DLed WMM the other day to so that's all set. I honestly know nothing about this so talk to me like I'm an idiot.

Shouldn't matter. I haven't used Windows 7 really but it should be fine.
Can you press Windows Key + Tab? Does it bring up a '3d' version of alt+tab?
If so, this is called Aero and you start Fraps recording from here. Granted, you'll have to edit off the first few seconds of video so no one sees that ugly start haha.
Yea, when I hit windows key and tab I see the desktop then the internet window and other windows I have open. When I record, does it automatically do it at a default setting like 320p or do I choose so I can record at 1080p?

It does it at w/e your desktop res is. If your screen is 1920x1080 or 1680x1050 etc it'll record in that resolution. Granted, later you may want to use an editing tool to cut out your task bar. As well, like I said the Fraps files are gigs so you'll use something to re-encode like Windows Movie Maker.
So you said in the video that I should record on a second HD. Do I choose which HD it records on in a settings window so it always records it on the second HD or do I have to choose one everytime I record something?
I know this might be asking a little to much but could you make a video of actually using Fraps? It would be a nice addition to your first video and plus I ' M S L O W.
I own FRAPS, Dxtory and Camtasia... and they all have different purposes! And I use all of them almost every day.
I also use 3D modeling software and prepare video tutorials of them, I do this with Camtasia. It allows you to record your entire screen and anything displayed.
FRAPS or DxTory record through openGL displays like a game or a viewport.... and viewport only (so no UI) - unless you do the vista trick, and I haven't so I can't comment on that.
If your only planning on doing this once and you have no real interest in doing it again then get FRAPS... its by far the easiest to use, and you can record your D3 gameplay too! Its the norm, not the best but its very good. If your going to be doing a lot of recording and you want the best - but with more work and self education then get DxTory.
If you will be recording a few of these for your dad then get camtasia... it is simply the easiest to use for what your doing.
And if your dead broke and looking for a free option to get HD video, and you have a good upload speed, then get yourself Xsplit Broadcaster - and stream it... then download the stream when your done.... won't cost you a penny. If you have no experience editing this is also a good way to add a logo to the video without having to do it in post.
Unfortunately, or not, I know too much about this so please ask any questions you want... more than happy to respond.
On a final note if you do use FRAPS without the vista trick, force your viewport to be 1280 x 720 or 1920 x 1080 and FRAPS doesnt allow you to control the specific aspect ratio, and you want it to display correctly on a HDTV.
It's basically going to be a video like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXXBS3HQNAc&feature=related along with other things being made played in a loop. So it shows what kind of things we can do for the customer.

Depends on the computer you have. For the PC, there is a application called Fraps. For the Mac, Snapz Pro X2. That's all I know.

I have a cracked version of camtasia and fraps and let me tell you fraps is the way to go. Camtasia is VERY resource heavy. Fraps FTW
