Hey guys, I was on these forums (and others) a while ago asking about guitars (electric) for myself, and now my brother is considering taking up drums. I have no clue what a good brand is or what the difference between them are. I have grown to be quite knowledgeable on guitars, but when it comes to drums I'm lost, so could someone please help me out? Thanks for the help guys!
Remo makes a pretty good kit. For symbols you could go Paste, Zyljun, Sabian.
Pearl is good for beginners too as far as a kit. Double or single kick? I recommend single if he's never played before. You can always get a secondary pedal for a single kick drum, get used to that before going with a whole other kick drum.

thanks for the help Nektu. I'll check that stuff out. Basically what he'd want is something that isnt completey crap and will fall apart, but doesn't cost loads of money (pro gear). To me the cheapest is just not worth it. Something sufficent that sounds good and is durable, but not too pricey. I know that sounds funny and seems obvious, but when comparing it to guitars maybe itll make more sense. I didnt want to buy a starter kit for 100 to 150 bucks with everything you need, cause itll do the job but suck for the most part. But i didn't want to buy a 1,000 dollar guitar either. so a nice compromise is what we are looking for here :).
Any advice on if certain brands or whatever sound different? like Fender is clearly a different style then Ibanez. Some guitars are more geared towards a heavily distorted genre and some a crisp clean style. I'm wondering what the equivelant to these trends would be in terms of drums?
A lot of that has to do with the heads you get for the drum and if you know how to tune them. Neil Pert had a specific set designed for him when they did the album "Roll the Bones". They gave him a different sound for that album than the sound he had in previous ones. You can get a marching snare instead of the typical snare for the kit and have a completely different snare sound than most other bands, because the marching snare, obviously, is deeper as far as length. A normal snare sounds tighter, crisper.

Ahhh gotcha. Now if the person wanted to play Hard rock mostly (some soft maybe), such as Breaking Benjamin, Korn, Three Days Grace, and so on, what equipment would you recommend? I don't know if you can give a good recommendation for that or not, but if so that would definitely help.
I have a tama myself and like you, SNowfreak, I didn't want to spend too much money, but I didn't want garbage that would fall apart. I paid about $600 for mine, which also was gently used, but it's held up til for 5 or 6 years.

Yamaha are the best..if not the best, then certainly one of the best.
I always thought that Pearl was the best, but also really expensive.

I would start with a 7 piece set. You can always add from there. Tama heads for the drums themselves and Sabian symbols.

Cheap and good quality for a beginner.
