How do BETA tests usually work? I don't really get into games enough to the point where I want to play the beta, except Golden Eye : Source. But D3 is definitely an exception. Does Blizzard hold a contest? Or do you have to go to Blizzcon or something to get a beta key?
Well Murderface is correct in as that is how some get in it usually starts like this:
Closed beta I: This is the beginning where they send it out to certain people of the press, blizzard VIP (this is were people who attend WWI come in) and a few random people (through a sign up process). It usually consists of the beginning of the game for you to play through.
Closed beta II: This is where they send it out to more random people as the more people the more chances there are to catch bugs, stability issues, class balancing.
Closed beta III, IV, V.....: eventually they get more and more people until they feel it is thoroughly tested. Though this doesn't mean they go through all these different closed beta phases but most go through more than one closed beta phase.
Open beta I: In open beta they give you a lot less of game to deal with (like one quarter way through the beginning), however they invite pretty much anyone who wants too. Unlike the closed beta which is generally a smoothing out process, open beta is usually done to test the servers to make sure they can handle the large amount of expected people and to push the servers to there limits.
Anyways that is what the beta process has been like when I've done it. I have done beta for DII (only open), Auto Assault, Tabula Rasa, and soon Wrath of the Lich King (thanks again diablofans.com :)). Feel free to correct me if I made a mistake
also, if you manage to get a beta key for one game (or expansion, whatever), u usually get picked for the next one. It happened to some friends of mine from World of Warcraft. They were on the closed beta for the original and got beta keys mailed to them for both expansions.
Well for DII blizz had a sign up website. For the NCsoft one I think I check "put me in for future beta" when I signed in for giuld wars (like blizzard now has) as I don't remeber actually signing up for those (but it was fun while I was playing them).

Did you contact someone and asked them if you can do it, or sign up on someones site?
Considering this year's Blizzcon, you have to be both.
