Ive played around in the stock market the last year or so and ive had my good days and bad.
Call me a gambler and ill admit it(try pulling me away from a blackjack table and we'll have a problem)
anyways there is this pretty cool stock investment game some of u may or may not have heard of. I know the age diff here varies from young teen to adult so i know im going to get a wide view of diff peoples perspectives.
I would want to open a private game for us all to join. We all decide on rules and starting amount of money(i was thinking 10,000$) as its not a huge sum of money but enough to play around with in the open market and a reasonable amount.
Also we could have a dedicated thread to discuss and help eachother out.
Games open to everyone who's interested in a little forum competition and wants to learn the basics of stock trading on the open market. Everything i know has been self taught and i'd love to share/ learn as much as i can.
The good thing about this game is it can be played during all of our free time. There is a rankings page and we all can view each others trade history to laugh and poke fun when someone looses all their money. Also you can put tons and tons of effort into this game by researching companies and checking past history, or u can find a good company that you are familiar with and just bet it all on them such as: Google, Microsoft, apple, sony, walmart etc.
I think it will be a lot of fun and i hope to get at least 3-4 other members who want to play.
The game is Free and you must only sign up with basic info to play
If i get enough interested i will post a step by step on how the game's functions work and a glossary of what most the terms mean on the site.
Ps this will be good prac for most of us when we actually have some money to invest!!
another Ps. If you Get good enough at investing like i someday hope to be We all can sit at home letting our money work for us and playing diablo3!!!

So does this game mirror the actual market and changes when it actually changes, or something? o.O'
Anyways, I have very little knowledge in investments... so yeah... x_x
Yes the game follows the market (with a 20 min delay)
We can set up the first game to end after a month or shorter. Then if everyone enjoyed it enough and gets the just of how the game works and basic stock investing strats we can start another game
The stock market is open 9:30- 4 pm East coast time which is 630 - 1pm west coast time
You CAN place trades once the market is closed but the trade wont execute untill the next days opening
So how many more members ya want Sliver? There are 5 of us right now, and you asked for 3-4 before. So you gunna wait a bit longer to try and get a few more?

ok everyone please excuse my double post i just want to make sure you all get this info
once u sign in on investopedia please click the stock simulator button at the top. This will bring a drop down menu . Select the games link
Then click the join game button(its kinda small)
Then click the search link
Then click the select box for "game name" and do a search for "diablo3" then click the join button
it will than prompt for a password the password is also "diablo3"
once u are in it should bring u to ur portfolio screen (which is empty because u dont own stock yet)
at the top there are diff links, Portfolio, trading, rankings, and games
Portfolio is ur overview of all stocks u own or are pending purchase. and shows what price u purchased the stock for and what price it is currently at. Also it shows how many stocks of that company u own and the diff between ur purchasing price and the current price(how much u have made or lost)
There are really no rules to this game. If u wanna buy 10,000 shares of stock abc at 1$ each then go for it. and if stock abc goes up to 2$ then u have turned ur 10,000$ investment into 20,000$ so long as you sell ur shares. Just because stock abc is worth 2$ one day does not mean the next day it might be worth 87 cents. So if a profit looks nice then sell and take ur profit and find a new stock to invest in.
Spread ur money out is the least riskiest. Putting all ur $ in one stock is just asking for trouble, Or greatness! It all depends. Myself givin 10k $ will prob spread it out over 4-5 diff stocks.
ok next is the trading link. Once u are there u can type in ur stock ticker symbol into the first field.
Google is Goog yahoo is yhoo aaple is aapl and so on and so forth. If u are unsure what to invest in(theres 100,000's of choices) then click the "symbol lookup" link. Then u can type in a company name or click another link fro there to get going.
The price listed by every stock is the price per share also known as "PPS" so if a company has stocks and the current price is 20$ a share then for 100$ u could buy 5 shares.
Once u find the stock symbol u want to invest in then o back to the trading page and type it in the first field
Lets say i wanted to research "Countrywide financial" a very large loan company. I would type in a search for the company name and it would bring me to this page http://community.investopedia.com/stocks/CFC
from here i can click any of the links near the top which show " past charts" of the stock or earnings or latest news the company has released and such. Also on the charts link u can change the length of time u would like to chart over. (i usually use 3 months, which is 1 qtr of a year as stocks are often measured in qtr year earnings)
Ok so once a company is researched and u want to "GO LONG" a term that means invest in and hope the price goes up then u go back to the trading screen and type in its symbol
Then choose a transaction type. (buy or sell) (u cant sell unless u already own it)
Then choose the quantity (how many shares) If stock abc is 10$ a share then 1000$ would get u 100 shares.
then choose the price either market or limit (market buys at the current market price (whatever the stock is currently trading for) Limit allows u to set a price. Say stock abc is 10$ a share. But u dont want to pay that much for it and u see the price is slowly dropping. Then u would put a limit price in at say 9.80$ and as soon as abc stock eventually dropped to 9.80 ur order would execute.
then the next option is "duration" most the time u will wanna use "good until cancelled" which means ur trade will "pend" untill its executed"
If u use"Day trade" then at the end of the market if ur trade hasnt been exectued yet due to price differance or no one wanting to sell to u then ur order will close
selling stock is the same way except u choose ur selling price and make sure u have the sell selected.
Thats it for now...ill update and explain more once u guys start joining the game on the site
Sounds neat, Silver. I only question your commitment to it. And I'd probably rely on you a lot to help me with it.
im in 100%. investing is what i want to do with my life whether it be a hobby or hopefully the way i make a living. I am currently in 2 other games which i play on regularly
i do hope u would join us Siaynoq
also this is why the first game is only a month long. Its more of a practice run to let everyone get a feel for the market and to see if its their kinda thing or not" The next game will prob be a qtr game (3 months)
no it didn't go through yet and i bought some tecmo stock due to the release of ninja gaiden II
smart move.
Ok guys now lets say u know a stock is going to move up(due to a release of a new product or positive year earnings) So you go ahead and buy some....But what if you have a feeling a stock is gonna Drop in price dramatically?
If stock abc is 5$ a share and u think its gonna drop to 3$ a share u would "Short Sell" it
Its listed in options in the trading section on the site. Basically if you Short Sell stock abc for 5$ a share u are actually borrowing the shares from someone else. once stock abc drops to say 3$ a share u would Give back that share of abc. But since u borrowed it for 5$ and u give it back at 3$ u profit 2$ a share. To give back a "shorted stock" after u are rdy to profit u select the buy to cover option in the sell/buy field on the trading screen. If anyone has any questions about short selling, feel free to ask. But if u are unsure then just stick to buying stocks "going long" and hoping their price goes up using the normal buy/sell options i discussed earlier
also game starts Monday morning at 930 east coast time. and runs a little over a month. This will be a prac game to let everyone get a feel for the market and all

wad u buy? and it shouldn't have actually gone through yet (should say pending) since the market is closed as of now.
Also i set the commission per trade at $8.50. That means everything u buy or sell u get charged 8.50. So everyone keep that in mind.
I have no idea what to go do though
