beautiful work yngvar
you're a fantastic artist
as others have pointed out, it's very similar to what i think they're going for in d3 and it does look completely professional.
really like the colors in it and the fire on the axes. (if you could add anything i'd add some blue tattoo work)
is he on his knees?
trying to understand his posture because on knees suggests defeat but he doesn't look defeated..
it would be like he fell to his knees then got up with renewed conviction and that's when you get him?
any way it's really awesome and don't ever let anyone else's achievements get you down. there will always be someone better.. (but in your case not too many better ) and every piece of work you do has the potential to be the best of its kind.
you've got great talent keep it up and thanks for sharing

serving only to ensure absolute vulnerability to the pain of their inevitable absence.

I'm actually not sure, heh. I guess I just imagined the floor being uneven and his legs are behind a mound or something like that. I probably should have made it a little more clear, but I didn't want to put too much detail into the unimportant parts of the picture.
looks familiar to blizzard's barb but I honestly thought you were making a joke in drawing his upper body so short. like a dwarven barbarian. sounds a bit negative and im sorry although nothing else about it is funny, its quite cool. the color, the designs look top notch and I like the situation you put him in too.
im reading what you said about him being behind a mound and it makes more sense now. I actually like it more, if suppose he's sinking in the blood of his demonic victims etc. Anyway can't get over the crispness of it, looks fantastic.

congratulation for your drawing, i saw it on the blizzard site. How can you submit your work there? im thinking of doing some diablo concept art, i already posted a version of diablo here. If you can tell me how can you post work there it would be much appreciated. thank you and great work man, you have a great future ahead

dude honestly i can care less how fat his neck is or whatever; it's amazing and well-rendered enough that blizzard gave you recognition for it
how long have you been drawing like that?
If you mean "drawing like that", as in drawing pictures of that quality, then it's hard to say. Personally, I see improvements in quality after every drawing I do, so I was never really at that specific level of skill before or after I drew the picture. Drawing skills are never stuck in one place as long as you draw something. That's a great thing about art. Skills are always changing for the better. :]
If your "drawing like that" is less specific, and encompasses a broader range of skill, then I suggest you go take a look at my gallery over at DeviantArt ( http://broken-orange.deviantart.com ) and see for yourself. The dates of submitting the art there should give you an idea as to what level of skill I was at, at specific points in time.
If you simply mean "drawing like that" as in drawing digitally, the answer would be about 5 or 6 years... I think.
the level of skill you're at is mind-blowing and i appreciate your response
i've always wanted to take up the idea of drawing like that, but nothing that detailed lol
I've just started using Photoshop, and it would be great to have some pointers.
Also, you think you could possibly make a tutorial for digital painting?
Unfortunately, I'm an awful teacher. I did make a couple of time lapse videos of me painting. Maybe that'll help? You'll find them here: http://www.youtube.com/user/Yngvr
Other people have made videos far more educational than mine. You should look them up. :]
Also, I would suggest getting to know the simple (but most useful) tools first. Mainly the Brush tool (and obviously the Eraser tool). Play around with the brush settings and try stuff out. Opacity/Flow, different brush shapes and textures, etc. My favorite brush is a simple round brush with 10-50% Flow. Simple is good. :]
Also, you'll need a decent tablet to get anything good done. As one of my favorite artists said, drawing with a mouse is like cutting a steak with a brick. It's probably possible, given enough effort, but far from convenient.
The most important skills, however, are the same ones that apply to traditional art. Knowledge of color theory, anatomy, composition, etc. If you know how to use that stuff, getting to know Photoshop, and using it to make good art, should be a piece of cake.

Thank you for the advice, I really appreciate it =]
And thanks for the link to the videos.
I was actually planning on buying a tablet.
Though for now I will just follow your advice and play around with the features.
I can't believe I never actually commented on this piece.
It's amazing BTW. =P

The overall composition is great. I really like the fire texture on the axes and the facial expression of the fallen to the far right. the background is also very well done. I love the silhouettes of the hands and limbs in grey.
There are only 3 things that bother me:
1. I understand that it would have been hard to get his eyes right at this scale, but was darkening them completely really the best option? It does add to his bad ass attitude, but maybe a hint of an iris or of an eyelid would have helped to make them more plausible. Because imo, right now his face is missing a little something. Here is an analogic situation. I think it's better with at least the
eyelids being shown:
2. He is standing on his knees, I suppose. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but maybe showing his right calve and foot a little bit would have been better for the readability of the painting.
3.You have done a good job texturising the environment. Besides it, the skin of the barbarian and of the fallens looks a bit plain, ceramic even. Most of the concept artist do it this way, and it's not a major isssue. However i find that texturized skin, even slightly, adds a lot to the painting.
But as you can see, my complaints are minor. The anatomy, composition and values are all very good. Excellent work, keep it up.
I agree with everything you're saying, VoXorb. There are lots of things I'd love to have done better, but I spent too much time on the drawing, and at one point I just had to say stop, as it was part of my final assignment in school. :] I'm pretty confident I'll do a better job next time around.
