It depends on where you grow your veggies. For example, when I lived back in my old place, tomatoes were equal or less then the supermarket that I grew. Now living where I live, they are far superior.
I think it has something to do with the land, the dirt, etc.

That's essentially why we have fertilizer and a host of other modern farming additives and implements. So we can grow more and higher quality foods in more locations.
