If anyone has XM Satellite Radio - Channel 51 - Mandatory Metallica - they have been playing a some of the new songs off of Death Magnetic too.

Hate to break it to you, a lot of music will disappear if musicians don't make any money. Free music may be the future, but you will always be able to support great artists by buying theirs albums or song. Another thing, if you have a family to feed and provide for then you will accept a big fat paycheck. Give you an example here, if you're a paint artist and create pictures and drawings and what not, why wouldn't you except money for it? Tell me why? You worked hard and earned it. Not many people can replicate it and create it like you can. So please just tell me why?
Don't give me that bullshit line, "I wouldn't".
90% of a bands profits come from touring, not album sales. Go look up how recording contracts work. If you knew anything about the industry (and you don't) you'd know that signing record deals puts many bands into debt. Get your shit together, then you can argue with me.
Don't compare the music industry to other industries. They aren't even remotely similar.
I'm okay with bands to want to sell their albums. I think it's fucked up that so many bands are so anti-piracy that they would sue their fans for damages. There is a big difference between wanting to sell albums and being proactive against fans who don't want to buy their stuff.
If you want to buy albums, than go ahead. Id you don't, then don't. I don't care.
No, because I don't listen to Metallica. They have 5 or 6 good songs I enjoy, but thats not very many considering how many they have.
Metallica has always been about money. If an album is available free on their site, it's because they are no longer making decent money off of them.
I just looked, and I didn't see any full albums free.
Perhaps this is true, but they're still putting up free songs on the internet for people to listen to without paying. They didn't put up every song from albums they made, so what?

Anyone who has money will always want more money. It definitely doesn't matter if they have enough or not. Their shows are "awesome" because that's how they keep making more money. If there shows sucked ass, who would go?
I didn't say Metallica was any different than any other band. Most bands are sell outs.
A few bands out there actually truly care about their fan base and go to great lengths to please them. This concept is lead by Trent Reznor and has bled into other artists. I can think of a lot of bands that actually encourage their fans to find ways to get the music for free, even if it's illegal and their label won't allow it. Some bands leave their label entirely, or others like Radiohead just give away new albums. Unfortunately, the Radiohead situation was a one time thing and they have resorted back to their old ways due to a fat paycheck offered by their label. Is that selling out? Hell yes it is. I won't treat them any differently because their music is better.
That Radio head thing, I'm just going to take a random quote here from Wikipedia: Days after announcing the album's completion, Radiohead released In Rainbows as a digital download that customers could order for whatever price they saw fit. The download's commercial success is unclear, as the band declined to publicise their Internet sales numbers. Technically, they didn't really give them away, because some people paid for it and maybe some others didn't, probably most, but we still don't know that and we don't know if they made a big or small profit from it. Like you said, that was a one-time thing and it won't happen again, because they received a fat paycheck. Why did they receive one, because that was a very successful album.

This is in human nature, humans always want more of what they need or got. That's why communism failed miserably in Russia.

Yes. But it's rare. What I would consider successful and what you would consider successful might be different though.
A lot of bands sell out concerts and have tons of albums out, but none of them are as adamant about the fans not getting the music for free as Metallica.
Free music is the future.
That is true, one mans garbage is another mans gold, so what?
Yes, but their changing their ways. They've got their own website with free songs on there. They have a youtube account with a their new song "The day that never comes" and they have footage of them just screwing around with guitars and such. I wouldn't go as far as saying not one band is as adamant about the fans not getting the music for free as Metallica. They're kind of like China, they've come a long way, but they still have some ways to go in their mentality towards certain subjects of their business and passion.

The fact that everyone had the option to get it free if they wanted to means they were giving it away. People paying for it were essentially making a donation.
Metallica might be turning around now, but it's going to take a while for me to believe they care about their fans like they should. Until then, I won't support them in any way. I also won't be downloading their music. I just don't like it.

How are you supposed to know if they are care about their fans if you don't listen to the fucking music? That's the only thing that matters. They show that they care by putting out a kick ass album that harkins back to the Metallica glory days. Thats all the fans really wanted. What really gets me is that you aren't a fan of Metallica in yet you feel obligated to call them sell-outs, possibly because of your inherent hatred of everything that people show enthusiasm for on this site. Don't spew uninformed shit. Listen to Kill Em All-Reload, then listen to Death Magnetic, then form your opinion. Otherwise your opinions are null and void of anything meaningful. Good day, sir.

I see no validity in your argument. There is no way to tell if Metallica is a sell-out unless you talk to them face to face and they tell you they are in it only for the money, and they could give a shit about the fans. Being a sell-out is a state of mind. It's such an irrelavent cop-out to say that you aren't going to buy thier album because they sued people for stealing. Just say that you don't like their music and leave it at that, prick.

You're stupid. I made it clear I wasn't a fan of their music and had no intention of buying or pirating it. I didn't say it was because they are sell outs.
Hell, I'm actually a better fan of Metallica than most of you guys are. At least I don't steal their music.
Metallica might be turning around now, but it's going to take a while for me to believe they care about their fans like they should. Until then, I won't support them in any way. I also won't be downloading their music. I just don't like it.
You kinda implied that until they turn around you wont support them. I guess I misconstrued the meaning of "support" as buying an album. Shame on me.
I've bought every album and I intend on buying this one when it's released in the U.S.
Goodguy...Its funny you know, because i say dont bring up the napster bullshit, but you do, because its the only argument you have.
Honestly, who the fuck are you to say who are sellouts?
Its all opinion.
Murderface has been spot on, so im not going to repeat everything he says. If i want to download their shit, i will, and if i like it i will support the band by buying the album in a few days, which i will. If you like a band, if your happy with the music they create, you show your support by buying their album, by paying to see them. So what if they make a fuck tonne of money...means they have a shitload of fans and a fuckload of great music. Why do bands succeed like Metallica have? Because they are good. For gods sake they are the best metal band of all time, and thats widely accepted by fans and professionals alike, and you can never take that away from them, no matter how much shit you talk and no matter how much you cry and whinge about the napster bullshit and money and being "sellouts".
Define sellout and show me how it applies to Metallica.
The fans out there are LOVING the new album and it just goes to show Metallica actually sat down and said shit, lets really try and give them something awesome. In the end, your pointing out flaws in a band and nobody gives a fuck what they are, because the music they make is so good i honestly dont give a shit if they fuck up. You try doing something like they have for 27 years and not making mistakes. In amongst death of band members, drug and alcohol problems, having wives, kids, families. And yet they still kick fucking ass. Go figure.
When the fuck did I say I was against purchasing albums? Quit putting words into my mouth you retards. I don't care whether you steal music or buy it. It's great to support your favorite artists. I'm not against it. Hell, I'm not even against the artists not liking piracy. It's there desire to hurt their fans to make a couple bucks they don't even need that pisses me off.
It's understandable, but very inaccurate to state that piracy has a large effect on artists. It doesn't. You want to support an artist, go to a show.
As for them getting amazing reviews, I've read a lot of reviews for it and not all of them are positive. Not even close to all of them.
When I look at anything, be it a musician, a teacher, a drug dealer... etc, I don't look at their profits, or how good they are at what they do. Character is what matters and to come out and say someone is so good at something, their character doesn't matter is not only incredibly stupid, but not all that surprising coming from you.
Random Guy: Did you hear? Metallica rapes babies.
Jarhead: Who cares? They roxorz.
That's taking your concept to the absolute extremes but either way, it's completely retarded. You are entitled to enjoy the music, support the band, and be a complete renob. Whatever floats your boat.
None of my points have anything to do with their music at al,l yet, you guys seem to think telling me the music is good is some sort of solution to what I see is wrong with Metallica and the industry in general. It's not like Metallica is the only band that does this kind of shit, they just happen to the topic of this thread. You retardedly obsessed fans take everything personal and get defensive over your band like they are a part of you. They aren't. You mean nothing to them. They'd sue you if they found out you had illegal copies of their music. Keep that in mind when you are telling everyone how awesome Metallica is and how much they care about their fans.
My god, the only fans more annoying than Metallica fans are Tool fans. The only difference is, Tool doesn't suck.
Greed rules the world, if you can't handle it, kill yourself.
Metallica doesn't rape babies, they kill them, they only rape mothers, and it doesn't matter much to them as long as they're dead/raped. (inside joke for those who own garage days)
You make a lot of assumptions. When was the last time they sued a fan? If you want to complain about the industry then make a thread about it.
If none of your points have to do with their music, GTFO.
