ffs you little elitists don't misquote me please. I understand you like hardcore... and I'm not asking for you to be penalized for liking a different playstyle from me, am I? I'm merely asking to not be punished for not enjoying the... fleeting nature of hardcore characters. Sure I understand, it's incredibly fun for you guys - isn't the fun of it reward enough?
I played hardcore, I didn't enjoy it. I never said that YOU GUYS don't get attached to your characters. Read me a line in ANYTHING I said that said 'nobody gets attached to their characters'. I expressed MY PERSONAL OPINION of the times I PLAYED HARDCORE. I found NO JOY in it because I felt no attachment to the characters. NOWHERE did I say YOU GUYS SHOULDN'T FEEL THAT WAY. Just that people shouldn't be rewarded for enjoying different aspects of the game. I don't enjoy hardcore, not because it's hard - I actually kind of found the challenge a bit fun. But after a while, I felt no attachment to my character so I stopped playing it. It was that simple.
Man I hate people who misquote people or change the wording. It's just so incredibly rude and such poor forum etiquette. How can you people even call yourselves friendly posters if you are so RIDICULOUSLY rude to people? God...
Edit: Note: My final statement: I don't feel that any game mode or style of play should receive any power-impacting exclusive. Fluff things like unique dyes or perhaps even have a different appearance to the final tier set - those are all great ideas. And of course the unique banner appearance modifications.
But actual ITEMS... no. Only someone who is truly in their heart elitist would ever agree to that - and that is proven by reading the posts of EVERY person in this thread who has said they're for it.
Man I hate people who misquote people or change the wording. It's just so incredibly rude and such poor forum etiquette. How can you people even call yourselves friendly posters if you are so RIDICULOUSLY rude to people? God...
Pretty sure both I and the other person who quoted you did nothing to change your post. It is, word for word, exactly how you put it and we both responded to it in a way that reflects how we interpreted it. A SC player who maybe tried HC died and now turns his nose up at the mere mention of HC. Now he who "KNOWS" he is a good enough player for hc, but he just doesn't want to play it. Now he comes here with something like:
Hardcore removes a lot of exploration from the game. You have to be very conservative, which just isn't how I, and many others, like to play this game.
Sure looks like something you're trying to express as a fact to me and it just isn't true at all. Unless you're telling me on SC people ran headlong into a giant pack of extra strong extra fast cursed fire enchanted lightning enchanted Stygian Dolls on hell mode and fell before them like wheat to the scythe there was hardly a difference at all aside from heavier stat point allocation to vitality. With the exception of the reaction of a sudden player declaring hostility.
Now yes your next point was indeed an opinion, but after the prior point made I was ready to bite any troll bait presented.
Now, I don't think anyone saying they want HC only items are asking for a hardcore only gem that add 70% enhanced damage to their weapons or 30% reduced damage taken to their armor. That kind of lessens the whole point of playing HC. Whats so hardcore about it when you're a walking brick of armor and hp that does as much damage as an entire game full of SC players?
I think what most people want is something to show their accomplishments in game in an obvious way. Sure my banner has 13 skulls with daggers that shoot from the eye sockets as you walk past it in town, but that's just the problem. Its in town and how often have the devs expressed they don't want players to have to spend much time in town. I think hardcore players also get special titles but are those going to show in game? Sure doesn't seem like it; this isn't wow.
I'm not sure what other people have in mind, but I think something as simple as a 1x1 gem that when carried in your inventory gives your character a special, possibly class specific, particle effect. Something that at a glance indicates what difficulty your character has completed, without being overly obnoxious, or something minor such as that.
Giving them exclusives rewards people for liking a challenge.
fix'd. If you want the extra drops, no one's stopping you from playing HC, can't have everything.
So yes, I was misquoted.
And yes, on Hardcore you do have to be a lot more conservative... one thing that I used to love doing was going to places and looking around for the HARDEST enemies I could find - ones that a lot of people would just ignore - and see how many times it took me dying to find a way to kill it - you know, the type of monster where even if you're around a corner, firing hydra or guided arrow at it for 10 minutes it still doesn't die and if you move even a quarter of a millimeter or if IT moves the wrong way - you die instantly even if you've got maxed resists in all categories.
Or when doing baal runs, people would leave the second they saw a pack of souls near the waypoint... I'd dash right in and see how long it took to kill them. Or at least I'd drag them away so someone else could go port to the chamber - even if I died 100 times. Things like that are stuff I enjoy doing.
That's something I just can't do on hardcore.
Also, randomly running ahead to see what's in a place throwing caution to the wind. Another thing you can't do on hardcore. That's what I mean by exploration. I hate to compare to other games as well, but when wow first came out, at level 21 on my hunter I explored the entirety of felwood. Sure I died 20-30 times. But it was worth it 'cause it was so cool to be able to say I'd seen it that low. That's my type of exploration. Honestly, I *like* dying when it's in the name of exploration. Hardcore takes that away from me - why would I possibly ever enjoy it? Once again, I'm not saying you shouldn't, just that me not liking it has nothing to do with the fact that I couldn't handle it. Hell I had a level 60 hardcore character that was alive until the day I stopped playing d2(eventually it expired).... I just tired of playing it around the end of Nightmare. Because I couldn't do all the things that I loved the game for... because most of those things were just plain suicidal.
But I have to ask... if you enjoy hardcore for the sake of the game... why do you NEED a reward other than the fun you get out of it?
Asking for a reward sounds like you're trying to validate your decision to someone. Or like you're trying to PROVE that hardcore is better than softcore - which it isn't, just different.
It's the same way for the hardcore players. What you find fun I find retarded. What's the joy in dying a hundred times to kill a few monsters. Prove that you were up for the challenge? Obviously you weren't since you died those 100 times.
That's the main difference between hardcore and softcore.
Softcore is like "Oh what the hell..." since the only risk involved is loss of gold and hardcore is "Better think this through..." because if you die - you're dead.
Even looking at SC vs HC objectively, hardcore involves much more risk than SC. Everything that your character carries (including the stash, which you can't loot to my knowledge) disappears. That's possibly quite a lot of items if you haven't muled items in a while. Not only would your main character be dead but items you could have used to give your new ones a little head start are also gone. Basically, you start over from scratch.
Hardcore specific items doesn't have to be unique weapon modifiers that would change the game compared to SC. A visually more appealing item to show off your hard work and maybe just a bit higher or optimized stats. No bullshit like:
"Archangels Might"
"Revives character upon death. Effect can only occur once every week of play."
Something like that would be ridiculous, not to mention gamebreaking and that's not what we're suggesting. I just want something to say that I'm a badass motherfucker that beat Diablo 3 on Infero while playing hardcore. Could be a cool looking armor, could be a unique title and banner for my character, could be a unique achievement, could be an awesome weapon.
As for why there should be a reward involved? You have one life. Simple as that. Keeping alive takes a lot of skill and care when playing your character.

+1
However, I think the only things that you should get as a reward is no gear of anysort. Either a title / Banner or both and an achievement.
When you start adding in game items it seperates the modes even further which doesn't need to happen. It's also more work for blizzard which doesn't need to happen, you didn't get anything special in D2 HC why should it be any different in D3?
All we got different was a fighting stance while in chat rooms, red colored names and different titles for completing the different difficulties. eg, Destroyer / Conqueror / Guardian.
HC D2 is boring as shit. It was fun to begin with due to the fact it was a change from SC, but after a while you realize HC is just SC but with less choices.
You have to play a PvM build with a high focus on survivability; that means ES build for every sorc, summons for every necro, etc. etc. You can't really fool around with other builds because it's too risky; you can't even go kill Hell Nihlathak because the risk is absolutely retarded. You're also completely missing the PvP aspect of the game.
Probably my biggest gripe about HC is how the HC-elitists feel superior to SC players. The game's not that hard. There are only 3 things that will really kill you in HC: 1) On death abilities like fire enchanted ancients/stygian dolls 2) Burning Souls and 3)Iron Maiden from Oblivion Knights if you're melee (but blizzard removed iron maiden from oblivion knights so now there's only 2 things that will really kill you).
EDIT: I also felt less attached to my characters because death is inevitable; eventually you're gonna lose that character to some fire enchanted mob/burning souls + bad lag spike. However, as long as your buddy collects the gear from your body, then all you've really lost are levels... and we all know you can easily hit 80+ in a day of Diablo if you really wanted to remake that character back.
Now, if HC D3 is some how different and not just a stripped down version of SC D3 (eg. HC D3 has added content, HC specific gear, etc. etc.) then I'll be excited but at the moment it doesn't seem that way.
NOTE: This is from an experienced hardcore player that had a 94 wind druid/89 blizz sorc.

You just contradicted yourself talking about only "3 things" would kill you on HC between your 2nd and 3rd paragraph. And what about the fact that HC requires a somewhat flawless playstyle... I take it you don't duel much, or did, when you played hc for about 20 minutes that it took to hit 94 on xpac lol

Only an idiot would try HC Nil; I assumed the readers here were not idiots. What you don't do can't kill you (I realize the double negative but I felt it was necessary here). The rest of your paragraph doesn't even make sense.

This would all be fine and dandy but Blizzard already produced a video about hardcore and inferno, and that the bosses would have even more abilities and tweaks for HC only... So wtf is wrong with modifying gear slightly to compensate? Either way, it's trivial, it'll be what it is.
Hardcore was not all about Cookie Cutter builds, it was about having that extra stress in gameplay making it gripping to play, even more so when you played experimental build making it even greater to have victory.
Also real Hardcore players killed Nil.
Like others mentioned once you seriously played Hardcore it was impossible to go back to softcore it felt so pointless, next to no repercussions to death unless you were going for a lvl99 or something.

Yea uh huh. Tell me how many pure Bone Necros you saw, or how many melee sorcs, or charged strike amazons. At least for me, there was nothing gripping to the game play. You die, you lose your levels but your buddy would salvage all your gear and you can easily remake your character in a few hours.

I couldn't wait to go back to SC. HC felt so pointless; what else is there to do when you can kill Hell Baal? You can't go PvP; you can't go farm keys for Pandemonium event; you can't do anything that you haven't already done a million times in SC.
I think we can all agree with this statement here...
Diablo 3 needs to come out so we can spend less time on this forum chatting, and more time playing the game we're all waiting for, however we chose to play it.
I refuse to listen to people saying that HC is the only way to play Diablo, it's the only true Diablo that sorts boys from men etc. - that's a pile of bullshit really.
Agreed. I remember the funnest times I had in Diablo was joining random pk games with my buddies and trying to 2v6 or 3v5 the rest of the guys in there. We'd literally pk for hours on end, and in the beginning, most of that was getting our asses handed to us. Anytime we hung out we would be thinking of new class combinations, discussing which items were better, etc. etc. It really got us motivated to MF/trade hard for the gear that we needed to dominate in PvP and soon we were just ripping apart pub pk games.
I honestly feel bad for the 'HC purists' that never had a taste for what the rest of the game had to offer. Killing hell baal without dying really isn't much of a challenge.

Try dueling on hardcore, and consistently winning, MEANWHILE maintaining your high lvl and xping on a regular basis... that'll wet your taste buds.

I did, but everyone just town hugs or sits by their tp. The second they even might take damage they run in, tp, or just leave; it's absolutely pointless.

Bad Idea I'm glad they still didn't do it with D3 and kept it the same as D2.
