Just like the topic reads... What do you think is the best solo class now that the new rune system has come out?
I'm going to try boxing an mf geared char through inferno for item drops. What class do you think would have an advantage doing this. I'm think WD since he has minions and can snare and slow.
Perhaps the WD minions will be fodder to inferno mobs.
No chance, Pets are the backbone of the WD's defense, and have a cooldown to resummon. Without them the WD is nearly worthless.
Because the WD can't summon skeles at will like the DII Necro could, I'd like to assume that that would be the case. But you never know with Blizz. Plus, the WD can control the mobs a little better than the Monk can, so they won't constantly be killing my boxed char.

Currently in beta the pets themselves are worthless compared to the WD's own skills (I don't consider Leaping Spider rune to really be pets). Hopefully they get a buff otherwise the pets are just more utility or bonus dps.
I have a feeling it will be the monk especially if we are talking Inferno mode. They have quite a bit of mobility and self healing can a monk quite the tank. Of course I haven't played Inferno this is just based on speculation.
ALL classes will be good solo classes. Wtf kind of a question is that? It's how the classes are built in the first place. It's who's good with what that'll determine which class is best for him. My word...
They are all meant to be good solo classes.
But if you were to break it down to common sense... then Ranges is better than Melee
Then you find the best ranged class with survivability , which is probably going to be the witch doctor because of the summons.
But honesty, Blizzard is trying to make each class equally good, so hopefully there isn't ONE class that stands out as "best"

They only reduced the dmg from 15% to 9%...its not a huge deal. They are meatshields, that was the whole idea from the start.
With 4 dogs that is 36% wpn dmg passive. With leeching beasts, by far the best rune imo, they heal themselves and you for 9% wpn dmg.
I seriously cannot see anyone playing a WD w/o taking dogs and/or gargantuan.
Even blizzard devs said that the petless WD would be a gimp flavor build.

One is never hurt by being given additional choices, only by taking them away. A QUADRILLION MAGIC FIND is worthless if you can't kill shit!
The WD dogs are strong (virtually mandatory) not because they actually kill things like Necro Skeletons in D2, they are strong because they make enemies stop moving and attack them, and the WD has plenty of abilities that work better on non-moving foes.
For example, Firebomb is a fairly strong infinitely spammable AoE. It's burst DPS isn't anywhere near an arcane orb or lashing tail kick, but you can cast it forever and never run OOM. With pets tying up enemies, it is fairly easy to hit stuff with firebomb. Without pets it is still usable on slow stuff (Most beta enemies are very slow moving) but you'll never hit Scavengers with it. I assume that once we get past the first third of Act I most enemies will move faster than a zombie.
The same can be said of various ground-targeting abilities like Grasp of the Dead and such. Even spider jars (which are more of a DoT than a summon) work a lot better against stationary foes.
I was glad to see that all the classes seem strong and viable. Of course at this point its all theorycraft. Most people seem to be leaning toward Monk for Inferno, but I think other classes could be just as good. Straight up damage mitigation isn't the only way to go. Dunno about Barbarian and Demon Hunter though, I think they'll be viable because everything seems so balanced, but they won't be up there with WD and Monk.
Personally I'm all about the Wizard though, and I think it could be up there with the Monk or WD. It has many options for damage avoidance, resistance and very good options for crowd control. Not to mention the aspect of the best defense being a good offense, which the Wizard also has in spades.
There was one guy I think said monk, and a bunch that said WD....And I said WD, and I am rarely wrong.
Bad medicine makes poison dmg weakens enemies attacks by 20%. bringing them down to 80% dmg.
Jungle fortitude further lowers the dmg you and your companions take by another 20%, which brings it down to 64% dmg.
Now throw in like armor/resistances, which btw you have a 5% armor buff as well, and you are an uber tank.
And if all that wasnt enough, a WD can throw on a shield w/o a huge loss to his/her dps, not that he should need to.

And this changes my argument because... of... reasons? Each patch different class will have the highest dps and survivability because of nerfs and buffs. So the best players behind each class will be almost always equal. Because it's Diablo and because it's Blizzard.
There's no point in going around and speculating "the Monk is gonna be the best solo class because he punches people! ha!" At least if you do that pull out some spreadsheets.

If you have a descent understanding of the game mechanics, then its quite trivial to simulate the potential strengths and weakness of a class/spec in your head. Ohh and we have beta and our vast experience in D2.
Also blizzards track record on balance as far as WoW is concerned is fairly atrocious. Though I am fairly convinced at this point that they intentionally want the game to be unbalanced, as it keeps people interested in the game. Regardless, there is no such thing as perfectly balanced, especially not in diablo. Its not even designed that way. There are and will be classes that are far better at certain things than others, thats just the way it is.
Personally I am torn between the wizard and the witch doctor. I love the pure dmg output of the wizard, but I know that the WD will have the easiest transition into inferno though.

I don't believe any defense will be as useful as offense in inferno. Any class which can constantly use the highest demage/dps skills without running out of resources will be extremely good in inferno. I know there are DH and Wizard builds which can achieve such results. I didn't check others but I would not use things like Firebomb if it has lower demage just because it is spamable as you won't have to much time to spam it. In inferno I would expect most of the time we will want to fire a spell and run, fire again and run, and so on until we get some reasonable gear. Otherwise it would not be that difficult if you could simply use all the skills you want from day one in inferno.

Thats kind of the point. The WD doesn't have to fire and run, fire and run, as the pets act as tanks for him. Also, the game doesnt necessarily have to be balanced like WoW, where the difference between bad gear and the best gear is absolutely outrageous. TBH, I actually doubt it is. I also doubt inferno is going to be anywhere near as hard as some think it is.

Please, D2 is in no way a benchmark for comparison. The game is old and the only balance patches were years apart. In SC2 different people were better with different races and all that means is that the races are balanced. In WoW every patch had some class slightly stronger then some other but overall they were balanced enough. Its when they were combined (RMP) that they became OP. Diablo won't have that issue, primarily because the devs have stated PVP won't be much of a concern for them and even more primarily because the topic is about solo.
And what that other sir that quoted me said is also true. The classes are sometimes intentionally buffed just so there's a bit of a reformation in the PVP area.
Hmm.. good question, and a good question deserves a thought threw answer.. Heres my thoughts:
first of it depends on play style, so im gonna split them in to four diffrent categorys:
-The Patient Player
I think players with good patience, who dont rush or need the faster paced action will do best with the Demon Hunter.
the char is rather squishy, how ever used strategic and with patience im sure the class will excel as a solo char.
WD on later levels will proberly do well on this to, since the char it self will need to utilize pet's well to gain the needed defences
and damge.
-The Action man.
I think players who require fast paced action, and a lot of BOOM's & Bang's will do best solo wise with the Barb
the class will allow them to see gore splash across the screen while their über defences and violent skills smash away at everything.
I think the Wizard could be a viable choice for "the Action man" player as well, depending on build.
- The Strategy guy.
I think that the more strategic players, who attack every mob as though they were the battle of waterloo, most likely will excell
with the WD, and later on the Wizard (build dependant.)
- The casualist
The more casual players i think will tend to preferr the WD and the barb, as both classes can be rather forgiving even if u dont
do or behave smart og good all the time. Said to that, most likely these players will never see Inferno or even Hell.
They can do well with all the classes, but tend to do best with the more forgiving ones,
here i think the WD will excel becourse of its pets, and the inherint abilities he has.
This is just a personal way of weiving gameplay. Questions such as OP made are always very dependant on the eyes of the beholder as such =)
no one will ever agree fully, wich is a good think, just means were diffrent ppl.
Agree to a degree with the above post....I like to look at "best solo character" based on a couple of different things.
1. Which character class can deal with immunes. If Inferno is going to be "more difficult", I think that the most challenging aspect of inferno will be how many things each monster in immune to. (i'm guessing at least two or three immunes per monster, especially due to the increased number of damage types available in D3 compared to D2). Any character that is being created, there needs to be some thought as to how to deal with immunes. (This is less of an issue since runes and skills are swapable with minimal cooldowns.)
2. I also look at this question with the need to address the hardcore element. Any ranged character is going to have an increased chance of survival, for multiple reasons (especially considering things such as the famed CE bug in D2). I concur that the WD will likely be the easiest hardcore character based on the pets and crowd control skills available.
Since Blizzard has indicated that they are looking for balance, I'd assume that the offensive skills will likely be the weakest for the WD to compensate for the crowd control (including pets) abilities possessed.
I think the WD will start out considered to be one of the strongest characters, but will eventually be played by only a small percentage, since the killing speed (when soloing) will be extremely slow. As a result, the "younger" players will get bored of the strategy and time involved in the game and will switch to a more "powerful" class.
The WD will be a very strong multi-player support member due to the crowd control abilities though.
I'm going to say that a very skilled Wizard will be taking the cake. They won't necessarily be the easiest, but i'll go out on a limb and say they'll have the most potential.
