I will probably not play music other than in-game until I am to the point where I am farming items and mats. When I am there I will probably listen to whatever strikes my fancy. Right now bands like Local Natives and As Tall As Lions are on my list. Maybe Hella as well.
Usually for games like Diablo I don't play music, because the ingame music really sets the mood for the area you're in.

Personally I will have the games music playing. maybe in a few years or if i get a bit bored of the music ( not likely) I would then throw on some viking metal.

I prefer to listen to classical when I am doing something more constructive, like writing or drawing.
When I'm playing vidya, I like electronica/metal. Nothing beats listening to some Juno Reactor while exploring Azeroth... ah memories.

I've never, ever listened to other music than in-game while playing. Probably never will.
Also the Diablo 3 soundtrack (what I've heard so far) rocks!
