To start, I am long time reader and first time poster and also new to Diablo franchise (I just started playing D2).
Now to the topic, with today news of a new difficulty mode called Inferno it made me wonder how all those different difficulties works. So I have a couple of questions:
1 - Is level 30 the cap for Normal mode? Or do I still get to level up to 60?
2 - Doesnt Nightmare and Hell also drop better loot and exclusive items when compared to the previous difficulty setting (just like Inferno)? Different difficulty settings is definitely fun, but they do seem to be exaggerating with 4 different settings...
3 - So now we have 4 difficulty settings total. Doesnt that spread the community too much? Wont it hurt the matchmaking for finding groups?
1. there is no level cap for normal. However, after beating it, you should be around level 30.
2. yes, the loot gets progressively better through the difficulties.
3. players don't choose what difficulty to play on when they start the game. The games progressively goes through the difficulties. By level 60, all characters should be on hell or inferno. As players level up they continue through the harder difficulties.
4. Again, you don't really choose a difficulty. The difficulty should match your character's level.

1- There's no level cap, per se, but the average player who doesn't grind for extra exp or avoid encounters should get to level 30 in Normal, level 50 in Nightmare, and level 60 in Hell. 60 is the level cap for any player.
2- The item drops in Nightmare and Hell aren't necessarily "exclusive" but they are naturally better than lower levels.
3- It shouldn't, seeing as you don't have to hunt down your own games anymore. Now it will just find you a game of your level (roughly) and throw you in there. Remember, all you need to be part of the community is three other people at the same level you are. 4 Acts, 4 difficulties, millions of players? Community won't be split too much at all.
4- Hard to say since each one is progressive, and the later ones can't be picked before beating the early ones, and once I'm a high level, being a lower level one is fruitless, but also I can't get to higher levels easily without moving up to those higher difficulties. So I imagine I'll start out on Normal, go to Nightmare, try Hell, and then Inferno, just like everyone else.
1. Hard to tell what will be the maximum level till you stop getting experience from normal difficulty monsters.
2. Not at all, it's a good progression if you look at it clearly.
3. I'm guessing there's at least 2million people that will buy this game on its first week if not days so don't worry much on the spread of community especially at least in it's first 6months of release.
4. Umm all of the above?

I love all loot fest kind of game! I will be playing all of them for the next few years. Loot fest games I'm looking forward to: LotR: War in the North,Torchlight 2,Borderlands 2 and of course Diablo 3.
In Diablo II, each difficulty level was unlocked be completing the game on the previous difficulty. In other words, once you had killed Diablo (or Baal if you had the expansion) on Normal, you could start a new game of Diablo II with the same character, but at Nightmare difficulty. I imagine Diablo III will follow the same model.
The harder difficulties will drop higher level items, and will have a better chance of dropping rare gear. I'm not sure that Nightmare and Hell difficulties will have their own exclusive loot like Inferno will have.
Lastly, I don't believe that there are set level ranges for each difficulty (aside from Inferno being max level characters only). However, why would you stay at Normal if Nightmare was available to you?
Hope that helps!
EDIT: Obviously I need to type faster...by the time I finished my post, four other people had already replied!

4 - *BONUS QUESTION* Diablo III has been cooking for 10 YEARS! What will be your flavor of choice? Normal, Nightmare, Hell, or Inferno?
oh wow quick response! Ty all for the quick answer it sure helped me better understand how things works!! ty
To clarify on your question of better loot dropping in successive difficulties:
Monster drops, assuming a similar system to d2, work based on monster level. there were spots in d2 that had higher level mobs than would have been expected, and they might be above or equal to monsters from earlier acts in higher difficulty levels.
For instance, monster levels in d3 might be 1-26 in normal, 20-45 in nightmare, and 40-59 in hell, with Inferno being 59+. So with the above setup, loot that drops from the beginning acts of nm/hell could drop from the later acts of the earlier difficulty.
If there is no overlap between monster levels in hell and inferno (or something like only hell bosses are low-end Inferno level) there will be loot (lvl 60+) that can only drop in Inferno.
(all numbers above are pulled out of my a... thin air.)
