Yea, I do think its useless. Going from 30k damage down to 21k is horrendous. And as I've said, the things that kill me the most are ground effects like desecrate and things like fire chains in certain situations.
Once thing I learned while playing WoW: dead = 0 dps.
Also, if you die mostly to ground effects then you should work on your play style. At the very least, you need more practice. Going to A4 instead is probably the wrong choice.
Looking at your profile, I don't see you responding to any of the suggestions presented here, be it a shield or different skill setup or anything else. So I really wonder whether you are here to get help or just to b**ch around...
Actually I just dropped more gold than I wanted to on a different shield and a helm of command. It seems like my defense is better in certain situations.
However, then I ran into those spear-chucking goatmen with a Gold-leader with horde, plagued, molten waller.
This is how it went.
Attack attack, they all run diff directions with molten being left behind them, so I just kinda ran to whichever ones were standing still without molten everywhere. Plagued starts coming up, they are all runnning everywhere, molten everywhere.
Your DPS wont go down by 9k if u switch the crapy spear for a shield...No way in hell thats 9k. Paperdoll dps MIGHT get down by 1k but real dps goes up since way more cyclones will spawn from sweeping winds...So pls stop talking bullcrap. Just sell all your monk gear. Play your wiz and leaves us alone.

Your current situation:
U lack armor, res, hp and dps. U can compensate a lack of armor and res by havin realy high dps. This way it doesnt matter since u burst down packs faster then they kill ya. Obviously this is not the case. U can play more defensive and try to kinda outlast the mobs. This wont work too cuz u dont have the armor/res and hp to do it.
So all u have atm is loh. loh isnt bad dont get me wrong. Your problem is that your attackspeed is too low and the amount of loh too small. Your incoming heal from loh dont make up for the high amount of incoming dmg. Thats why some affix combos rip u apart.
So there are some solutions for your current problem:
a.) Raising your armor/res/hp to be more tankie.
b.) Raising your dps to something approx 50k unbuffed
c.) Raising your benefit from loh by ramp up loh itself and your attackspeed
"A" is kinda cheap. All u need is a good shield. For "b" and "c" u will need gold to spend on the ah. Monk DPS Gear is not cheap anymore. On eu u have to spend like +100mil to pump up your dps to like 50k unbuffed. Not sure about us servers. Trying to go with "b" or "c" will end up in buying next to a completely new gearset. cuz u cant just switch a ring. If u switch your dex/res ring for a dps ring u will loose so much res that u have to buy like 2 or 3 other pieces. So u have to make a decision how you want to gear up.
Yea, for some reason Monk gear is ridiculously expensive. I don't know where you play, but I play on US and it's ridiculous.
Some things I might try are: dropping my LoH amulet and spear for a shield and a high DPS weapon, and this amazing amulet I found with 6%crit, 60% crit dmg, 120 dex, 150 vitality, 150 armor. Will be maybe like 2000-3000 DPS increase. (havent tried amulet its on AH)
I have 800 resists now with the shield and 7000~ armor. I also have like 7-14 yards of pickup radius for health orbs depending on what I switch.
My HP gets a little low, like 35k if I put in Vit gems.
Overall, with this stuff I feel a little tankier in general and I can probably boost the DPS by neglecting LoH all together.
But TBH a shield really doesn't give AS MUCH defense as I would like compared to LoH. LoH is pretty damn good too.
Like, when I dual wield, I can take down all white mobs easily and maybe like 50% of elite packs. Same WITH shield ofcourse.
But with the shield the problem of ground effects is still pretty big. 1.04 will be nice. Walls are the biggest problem combined with something else.
Things I am considering are: using transcendence instead of resolve to pop a quick little heal when I need to from ground effect damage (although I've tried it before and it doesnt usually save me)
And using conviction aura--> intimidation to hopefully lower the damage of ground effects by 10% instead of ~11% dodge from MoE which doesnt help. I also consider the 30% slowing convition aura to slow them a little bit when they have fire chains and molten, so I can get away a little bit.
I think monk is like the FOTM class or something so prices are just absurd. I mean you can gear out a Wizard for probably half the price and SAIL through all of inferno with 1hand tied behind your back. It's a joke.
TBH I dont even know why I care to work on the monk, it seems like masochism. Wizard and Demon Hunter are probably just flat-out easier and way cheaper to use for farming.

The key is a balance between Resist / Armor / DPS / life per second. IMO
Actually, it would be cool to try a life per second monk with a shield. Would save you against desecrate and things like that a lot, youd be surprised
