Was just poking though and noticed that the gems all seem to have a level 1 requirement.
Rubies specifically offering +exp gain (+31% radiant star) seem a little curious. Though the bonus only comes from socketing in helms. Actually... on later thought, if those top tier gems are rare as suspected I suppose socketing them in a rusty horned bucket might not be so wise.
On the other hand, 20-40 damage seems a little meager for being the top tier, though more than one could definitely be quite the improvement.
Related note; Do we know which items will be socketable or is it as the official page suggests and is limited to helms and weapons? I recall seeing socketable armors in some outdated material. namely Natalya's shadow. here, http://www.diablo3wa...-from-diablo-3/

Well, since you can just pull them back out of that rusty horned bucket when you get something better, there's really no downside to it...

Well yes for your next characters bonus to experience through gems will be useful. Dont look too much into radiant star gems though lol.
In the new website database all gems only display “Head” and “Weapon” slot effect. Does this mean they can be no longer be placed in other slots? And this page only display 4 types of gems, were Diamond and Sapphire removed?
The website is currently incorrect, gems can still be placed in all the same slots as before (including Weapon). We did remove Diamond and Sapphire a while back. Their effects just weren’t very interesting. We can always bring them back later if we find some stat spots to fill.
I believe jeweler you get later in full game have an option to extract gem from gear by paying some gold, so you can reuse them.
Also, that bonus damage seem multiplicative by stats/attacks, so it will scale with rest of gear, same as simple +1-2 damage mods in Beta can add obscene bonus dps.

Exactly, when i equip a +2-4 dmg rin my damage goes up a lot more than 4. The DMG boost will be fantastic but probably not useful enough until Hell. I'll be sticking with the XP gems up until hell and then well see how the xp is but I'll prolly switch to DMg, btw playing a DH.

Also about there being no downside to pulling the gems out, I found this while I was looking for the above quote:
