Because they are not random.. they were still made with a set limit, while rares where not. Remember, More than one of it != random. The affixs on them I think are also custom made... its not as random as a rare.. lets put it at that. If you see one drop, youll be able to know what you "can get"
Exactly. A rare can give you 2 crappy stats or 7 amazing ones, or any mix thereof. Legendaries will give you some fixed archetypes, and a variable bonus or two.

The final test of the Serpent's Form takes place in "The Pit of 12 Vipers." The initiates are not told about the 13th.
You guys keep saying there are fixed stats... or some fixed, some random. What is fixed on the unique sword that has been shown?
The modifiers are different for damage (fire/lightning/ice confirmed), the damage is different, the other modifier is different (+2 max or +WD damage) and the durability is different.
It's a good theory to have certain fixed and certain random. But you guys are saying it like it's true when it isn't. You guys saying it doesn't make it true, sadly.
For example I love the idea of a Legendary high end item like...
Sword of AWESOMNESS!!!:
1.4 attacks per second 150 min to (325-400) max
(10-15%) chance to crit 250% crit damage
When Sword of AWESOMENESS!!! deals damage it has a 5% chance to cast Frost Nova After a monster is slain by Sword of AWESOMENESS!!! the corpse has a 10% chance to explode, dealing 50% of it's life total to monsters within a 10 foot radius
(Insert random stat here like more + damage, more + damage for a class, faster attack mod, etc.)
I think that's cool. When an item is partially fixed and partially has random mods on it.
But this item isn't really like that at all. Unless the set modifier is it always has a elemental damage type of 2-4, which could possibly be the case.
@Phrayed yea that would be cool imo, but then the set stats should be unique stuff that can only spawn on legendarys, I guess 2-4 elemental damage doesn't feel legen-wait-for-it dary enough for me. But could be because its a low lvl legendary
I think that's what is happening to me here. I bet the 2-4 is the set modifier and the other one is just random. So I'm probably just being sad about nothing.
I just think Legendary items need to be... Legendary. Part of that is set stats or at least partially set stats. I always thought it was awesome in Diablo 2 when you would ID an item or make a runeword and you'd get one of the lower damage percentages and be like WTF!!!!!! But then if you got the best percentage you were super jacked about it.
It's an element I hope they keep. Because when you look at someone and you are like "OH WOW! THEY HAVE THE HIGHEST PERCENTAGE (Insert item here)!" I think that's really cool...
As opposed to saying "Oh... They found a 'Legendary' sword that rolled better random mods than my completely random mods."

There ARE fixed stats, and in this case of such a low level leg, its just ONE fixed stat, which is a plus 2-4 damage. what TYPE of damage is random, and the second stat is random.
Legendary = random fixed stats (always plus damage, the random part of this fixed stat is how MUCH dmg), then random stats all together.
Meh then they should add Uniques on top of legendaries. The great thing about Unique items was you knew what you were getting and thus you strived to get/trade for them. Although I guess with the AH you'll be able to find anything you want.
Not a big deal I guess but I prefer set affixes for unique/legendaries.
I guess what really irks me here is that I could probably find a rare or even magic sword with the exact same stats as some versions of griswold's edge, like the "+2 max damage / +2-4 fire damage"
Have you played through Inferno yet? I could easily guess that there are some mods which are only applicable to Legendaries and can't be found on rares, or that are very difficult to find on rares.

Becuase thats how they do work, it was said by a blue.
I dont think you understand that yes, there are lets say X amount of this item, but out of those X amounts, they are not random, they were made like that, with some random built in, but the random is controlled .

Right, I got it.
I corrected myself in later posts and realize that the 2-4 with a random elemental type is the set stat. I guess it's just strange to see because it's something so basic. But it's also probably one of, if not the easiest, Legendary to find in the game... so that's understandable.

gotcha, and yeah.. I personally have mixed feelings about it I mean Yeah its great because now when you get your item, there could be a better version of it.. but Id rather that "better version" be a whole new item. but at the same time, I understand the logic behind this move.
