I was looking at the differences of what Sanctuary looked like in Diablo II compared to what it's going to look like once Diablo III arrives; and I saw something on one map that wasn't on another one. First; URLs to these pics so you can compare for yourself
OK. So if you're reading up to this point I'm going to assume you've taken a look at both maps already. Now, if I could direct your attention to the small cluster of islands in the southwest of both maps. If you look at the aforementioned part of the D2 Sanctuary map, you see the Amazon Islands Skovos, Phillios and Lycander. Take a look at the D3 Sanctuary map now. Same islands are there, but to the west of the initial trio there's a new 4th island called Skartara. Oh and if you look as well there's a tiny little island tucked in the middle of the first three (Skovos, Phillios, Lycander). The little island is insignificant (or is it?), but I can't help but wonder where Skartara came from or what purpose it has in Sanctuary.
My only thought as to how this island suddenly appeared in Sanctuary has something to do with the Worldstone's destruction. Look at Arreat and it's surroundings; the continent/area is all scattered and broken in the form of large islands in the sea. Did Skartara re-emerge in Sanctuary after being lost in ages past? Or is there something else to it in the lore that I might've missed? It could just be a place that was never considered necessary to be included when the story of Diablo II was first established; and that there's finally a use for it to be included in Diablo III, but either way I'd like some form of answer or conclusion to this.
So there you have it. Thoughts? Anyone care to add something or elaborate on this? Sorry for the lengthy post, but I just needed to get this straightened out
I pretty much just attribute it to the scribes of Sanctuary becoming more knowledgeable and accurate in their recordings.
There are a few other changes to the map too, most notably the shape of the eastern half and the naming of Xiansai.
But from Blizzard's perspective, I'd say its just them redefining the map, mostly for fun. They wouldn't have had Skartara in mind when they made DII, or else they would have added it to the map. I don't think we will be visiting it in DIII though either, because they released concept art for the Amazon main city and I'm pretty sure they said that its not gonna be part of the game, they just like to establish the lore of the whole of Sanctuary anyway so they are better able to make the world come to life.
Going by past Blizzard experiences like this, it's generally lore related. You will also notice they named the Xiansai island too. So there is probably a good chance it's a homeland to a new class or it'll be somewhere we visit during the storyline.
Yeah I forgot to mention Xiansari. I kinda know a bit about that place; somethin rumored/mentioned about it being the homeland of the Wizard? I was able to find somethin about Xiansari, but I couldn't find anything about Skartara hence I looked here for answers :).
Cool, so we can just chalk it all up to scribes updating their knowledge of the world, or after-effects of the Worldstone's destruction... thanks guys
actually the rogue encampment of the sisters of the sightless eye is in Khanduras, which is the same province/territory where old Tristram/new Tristram (?) can be found. According to the maps I posted, it looks like the rogue encampment is not too far to the northeast of Tristram.
ohh kk
