umm....where in his journal does it say anything about him not being the last of the horadrim or any of that? sorry if i am missing the obvious i just fail to see the problem thats all. as far as i can tell the journal simply retells the first two games.
omg...the beginning of cains book is him speeking BEFORE the events of diablo 1. Then they happen and he realizes that its all true and he is PO'd at himself for not taking it more serious. He was not the one who was with Tal Rasha, he was his descendant. he was told the stories and has much knowledge, but wasnt quite sold on the whole idea...now he is...i dont get what everyone is making a fuss about. NOTHING has been told in that book that pertains to diablo 3.
Cain was SENT to TRISTRAM AS A HORADRIM to GUARD DIABLO. He was ALREADY a HORADRIM at THAT TIME. He didn't LEARN to be a HORADRIM in TRISTRAM. The MAGE CLANS, including the HORADRIM, are from the EAST. TRISTRAM is in the WEST. IT MAKES NO SENSE.
and there is no mention that he was one of the actual mages that were part of the Horadrim several hundred years ago.
he wasnt. The one you read about in the Diablo 1 manual was Jered Cain, the one we all know is Deckard Cain. Cant tell if he was an ancestor or not (at least thats not in any of the books i read) but its definitely not the same person.
In CAIN's JOURNAL he questions whether the Horadrim or the Hells are real!
This is the problem.
And in fact, based on what I've read elsewhere Blizzard is changing the story and saying that Cain was simply a storyteller and not a Horadrim.
It's messed up.
Once again, there is no problem.
We know he was Horadrim prior to Tristram.
Up until the time he arrived in Tristram, it is apparent, from the journal entry, that he simply didn't believe that the stories told to him about his ancestors were actual truth.
The maddening of Leoric, and the subsequent events which unfolded, opened his eyes, and made him question his former beliefs. He realized that the stories were not mere legend, but were, instead, fact.
How many more times will you need to read that? I'd like to watch House this evening, so if I need to repeat it again, let me know soon...

Read the entry from Diablo Wiki. It says it all. I can;t keep arguing in circles with you guys. The whole story is told in Diablos I and II. Angel Tyrael calls Cain the last of the Horadrim. It's all right there.
I guess Blizzard won't lose any money underestimating its audience.

How do you know he was sent to Tristram? I'm pretty sure he was born there:
The Horadrim followed in the wake of terror and anarchy that spread throughout the Western lands. After a great battle which claimed the lives of many brave souls, the Lord of Terror was captured and imprisoned within the last of the Soulstones by a group of Horadrim monks led by the Initiate Jered Cain. These monks carried the cursed stone to the land of Khanduras and buried it within a secluded cave near the river Talsande. Above this cave the Horadrim constructed a great Monastery from which they could continue to safeguard the Soulstone. As ages passed, the Horadrim constructed a network of catacombs beneath the Monastery to house the earthly remains of the martyrs of their Order.
Generations passed in Khanduras, and the numbers of the Horadrim slowly dwindled. With no quests left to undertake, and too few sons to sustain their guardianship, the once powerful Order faded into obscurity. Eventually, the great Monastery that they had built fell to ruins as well. Although villages grew and thrived around the shell of the old Monastery, no one knew of the dark, secret passageways that stretched into the cold earth beneath it. None could have dreamed of the burning red gem that pulsed within the labyrinth's heart...
That to me sounds very much like Deckard Cain was born there (from a family line started by Jered Cain, apparently), not transferred there from Khejistan. Maybe he didn't grow up in Tristram exactly, but somewhere nearby at least.
Now tell me where it says he was sent to Tristram, seeing as you're so sure of it.
Also, even while in Tristram (in Diablo I) he barely believed the ancient legends that were told to him:
Quote from name="Cain for Archbishop Lazarus Quest »
This does not bode well, for it confirms my darkest fears. While I did not allow myself to believe the ancient legends, I cannot deny them now.[/B'] Perhaps the time has come to reveal who I am. My true name is Deckard Cain the Elder, and I am the last descendant of an ancient Brotherhood that was dedicated to safeguarding the secrets of a timeless evil. An evil that quite obviously has now been released.
What he said in the first game sounds just like what he says in his journal....
its quite clear that they meant this to be the conception of the local populace. "…can the tales of the brave Horadrim and the Lords of the Burning Hells be more than legend…".
however i do agree that this is INCREDIBLY bloody unlikely as its happened what 5 years ago??? i suppose the only thing i can say to justify that sentence is that perhaps some were not in the areas affected. but again i find this unlikely as so many bloody places were affected. Jungles in Kurast where the temple of light used to be, Lut Gholein (idk spelling), act 1 where ever that was, and then naturally harrogath
No, Num3n, that line isn't referring to what happened in DII. Its referring to what happened with the Horadrim and the Dark Exile over 300 years ago, not 5 years ago. 300 years is a long time and certainly long enough for many generations to pass and for information to be lost or questioned.
Sanctuary Timeline:
App. 700
Led by Azmodan and Belial, many of the Hells' lesser demons rise up against the Prime Evils in a rebellion that culminates in the Dark Exile. Diablo, Mephisto, and Baal are exiled to Sanctuary from the Burning Hells.
897 The archangel Tyrael gathers together mortal heroes to create the Horadrim. He bestows the Soulstones upon them and tasks them with tracking down and imprisoning the Prime Evils.
902
Mephisto is captured near the jungles of Kehjistan and imprisoned under a Zakarum temple in what will eventually become Kurast.
903
Baal is tracked to the desert near Lut Gholein. Tal Rasha, the leader of the Horadrim, sacrifices himself to capture Baal in a damaged Soulstone.
912
Diablo is finally captured by a group of Horadrim monks led by Jered Cain. The monks bury Diablo's Soulstone near the river Talsande in Khanduras, and a Horadric monastery with a network of catacombs is built over the burial spot.
918
The town of Tristram is established around the Horadric monastery.
App. 1080
The Horadric monastery in Tristram is abandoned.
App. 1100
The Horadrim, with no quests left to undertake, fade into history and legend.
1264
The eastern lord Leoric comes to Tristram, declares himself its king, and converts the old, long-unused Horadric monastery to a Zakarum cathedral. His advisor, Archbishop Lazarus, secretly releases Diablo from imprisonment.
If Cain discovered that he was in fact NOT the last of the Horadrim, and there was actually a very secret order that retained the Horadric beliefs and ways, that would make for an awesome story twist. Perhaps the Horadrim are just angels in disguise...
The OP was severely owned. Most of the high posters on this site have unparalleled knowledge of the Diablo universe so I didn't expect otherwise. If there had been a glaring flaw in storyline it would have been rooted out the very first day the journal was released. Blizz knows this, they also know that they would be lambasted for making a mistake like that. They probably checked the lore several times before releasing the journal.

NO NO NO...it is not the general populace..it is simply DECKARD CAIN before DIABLO 1...right before.
and btw diablo 3 takes place 20 years after D2.
Chuck Norris Don't Even Fuck With Cain.
