No display upgrade this time, though now it's a sure thing next year. Still, nice upgrades. IOS 4 will compliant it nicely.
The iPad was a great success, even though it can't replace your laptop as many people expected it to do. The iPad 2 is due out between February and April, it has tons of expectations and rumors behind it. Macrumors.com covers any and all somewhat credible leaks, and rumors on Apple devices, and as of late has had some really interested ones about the iPad 2.
Latest Discussions-
iPad 2's screen. The current resolution is 1024-by-768-pixels at 132 pixels per inch (ppi). The rumors say that Apple's coined "Retina display" will be coming to the iPad 2. Which in Apple's description, means that at a normal viewing distance, the human eye can not see any pixels. If you've seen the iPhone 4's display, it's truly impressive. The iPhone 4's retina screen is 960-by-640-pixels at 326 ppi. At 12 inches from your face, Apple's normalized viewing distance, the claims hold true.
Apple knows people hold the iPad much farther away from their face, thus not needing such a high ppi to meet their qualifications to be a retina display. Also, no portable device could handle a 9.7-inch screen with a 326 ppi resolution. It would be 2560 x 1920 pixels, even more than the 27 inch iMac at 2560 x 1440. Keep in mind standard true HD is only 1920 x 1080.
When Apple upgraded the screen of the iPhone, in order to have old apps still be able to run on it without modifications they simply doubled the resolution, from 480-by-320 163 ppi, to 960-by-640 326 ppi, thus having 4x the pixels, yet still allowing old apps to run on the screen. Since that's still a relatively small amount of pixels, Apple new A4 chip had no problem handling the load. This is what is most current rumors claim will happen to the iPad 2. Though it might not be so straight forward.
Going from 1024 x 768 at 132 ppi, to 2048x1536 at a 264 ppi. While this would allow all the current apps to run fine, there are technical restrictions that have people doubting this. Having 4x the pixels means roughly 4x the power, and processing. All of which are very expensive to produce. People say it's strange for Apple to apply such a large upgrade to a 2nd gen device. Also there's the question how Apple will keep the price point. Yet more leaks and rumors keep coming in supporting this new screen.

That's also what I was thinking could happen, Apps being made for 1024 x 768, and being upscaled, still rendering text though so it'll view better on the screen. So the resolution would really shine in web browsing, and media viewing. I'm still doubtful though.

Well.. Technically.. Onlive had a CES demo of how you can play any PC game on your iPad. It uses your PC to process the game, and stream it to your iPad via Wi-Fi. They even played Boarderlands on the current iPad at CES though his connection was terrible, and it was a tech demo. There's even a joystick iPad accessory . Though a blutooth keyboard and mouse would be used for D3 obviously. So by the time D3 comes out, I'd bet you could play it on your iPad, though a small delay would most definitely exist.

Same here. I didn't buy the first gen iPad because I truly would use the facetime app. A lot of my friends have either an iPod, iPhone, or an iMac and use facetime with each other. So a camera or two was all I was expecting at first before all these rumors, and that was fine. Now with all this happening I'm admittedly excited for what the iPad 2 may have, even if my gut tells me most of them are false..

Tablets are more useful than people give them credit for from a professional standpoint. With the iOS 4.3 beta we'll be able to run MS word and a lot of other standard desktop apps. Yes, a laptop would be cheaper, but for some it's worth it to have a touch interface, and the app store to call their own.

Which is good. But, then again, you have a laptop for that. In my opinion, since they're giving you a USB port this time around, you'll finally be able to plug in a keyboard for that function, but then...
A big screen + keyboard? What does that amount to? What have we, as consumers, been using for years that has a big screen and a keyboard that, when folded up, can fit in a backpack or a bag made specifically for that device?
Oh yeah, a laptop. And they're cheap too. I guess the benefit that a laptop has over the iPad is that you don't need to carry around a USB keyboard to avoid "typing" on a touch-screen keyboard.
The whole tablet thing, in my opinion, is an odd concept. We're basically moving everything that we can do on a laptop onto a budding market consisting of big slabs of technology.
But, holy shit, I can't use apps on a laptop. What the fuck am I gonna do? If I can't play Fruit Ninja, every amazing piece of technology ever created will be rendered useless because I can't use my bullshit apps.
So, iPad = Laptop function - laptop design + a bunch of bullshit = a broken laptop.

With the iOS 4.3 beta we'll be able to run MS word-
you'll finally be able to plug in a keyboard for that function
-Blutooth keyboards? This is just a random one I pulled up, others come with USB, Apple pin connection, and Blutooth. When plugged in they also charge your iPad using it's own plug in power, or 10 hour Li battery.
-There's also the G3 option which you can't get on laptops unless you buy an receiver, $99+ plus plan extension.
-Battery life, the best laptops for the price of an iPad have 6-8 web/video life. Most of the time they fall short of that when tested. The iPad held a 12 hour video run when on low brightness, and 9 hours when at medium high. This has been proven by customers millions of time.
-Gyroscope, while a laptop with a gyroscope would be pretty pointless. A tablet with a can utilize such things. Now this isn't to be mistaken for a accelerometer; accelerometer = 2 dimensions, gyroscope = 3 dimensions.
-Speed/Apps. Not to be mistaken for power. This is where Apps come into play. Apps are a one touch solution instead of web surfing for answers to what you're looking for. Need specific information fast? Apps, most being free.
-Web browsing. When you don't need "An App for that", compared to laptops of the same price range, page loading times are faster on the iPad, and if you really want flash you can use many of the free browsing Apps out there.
-Gaming. The iPad can't run high end games people say? Onlive for iPad is still in development, not even a public beta out yet, it'll be great when it's out. You'll be able to play games full size laptops can't run. Lag, most likely, but if you're really serious about gaming than you get a desktop, or console. Though I bet D3 will run fine~
The only thing an iPad falls short for compared to a laptop of similar price is pure power, which unless you're HD video editing, or film making will make zero difference when surfing the web, or even HD video viewing. Also, this is the first gen model we're talking about..
If the next gen has the features that are being leaked, than screen resolution, mobile video chat, and processor speed will fall to the iPad table also in it's price range.
All and all if you're hating on the iPad for being "an iPod Touch that doesn't fit in your pocket." Or not worth the price, you have no need for it, and little knowledge of it. So you might as well get a laptop, it all comes down to preference, or need.
If you're going to front an downfall of it, just be sure to know the truths and capabilities of it, most people don't bother to learn about anything past the commercial and critics.

Rather tasteless opinion\prod at people who enjoy the product.
Apple has the highest costumer satisfaction rate of any global electronics company, so while "Hordes of dipshits" might be buying these products, they're more happy about it than the people or, "Hordes of dipshits" buying laptops.
It really comes down to, if you want a laptop for $500, great go get one. If you want a iPad, with blutooth keyboard case for $500, great go buy it. You're not really loosing, or gaining a surmountable amount for a normal person's needs either way.
If you just hating on Apple because.. Well any biest reason. Than...

i dont want to carry around a heavy laptop and charger with me to school everyday and so an iPad is a serious alternative; it connects to the internet and is able to bring up class notes and such. when i tested the iPad vs android based tablets there was no comparison, the android tablet took about 3-4 minutes to load up verizon wireless's website, and it failed to load many of the links as well as failed function :(. iPad however, took about 30 seconds and loaded everything up, ran smoothly and without screen lag. right now i dont see an alternative to iPad when it comes to tablets. as for laptops, being a windows user my entire life, im starting to become annoyed at all the hardware/software problems that arise for no apparent reason (endpoint builder? wtf is that and why does it stop randomly when nothing is going on?), and envy the smooth running and long battery life of apple products. i dont need fancy graphics and computing power anymore, i could buy a desktop for that.
if you can find a tablet alternative that doesnt suck as much lmk.

Adobe, who makes flash, isn't going to make it work for Apple products for awhile. I heard a rumor that they something happened between the companies so they are only developing flash for computers and Android phones. But that is just a rumor.
You're pretty much right. Long story short, Apple hates flash because it sucks, Flash hates Apple for not just putting it in anyway, Apple takes the lose of flash content over a unreliable platform. Still, there are tons of web browsing apps which have flash support. Apple is invested in H.264, a media format much better than flash, and is quickly growing.
“We act as though comfort and luxury were the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about.” - Albert Einstein
Yes it is a better format but not as widely used and won't be for awhile. For the time being anything with flash will get more sales because more people know about it.
That's the sad truth. Flash has potential, it just would cost Adobe a good amount of money to improve it, and likely have very little financial increase from it. So, it'll not happen any time soon. They're slowly tweaking, so we can expect improvement, slow but steady, oh did I mention slow?
